Inside Etsy HQ: Imaginative Phone Booth Decor With Zooguu

JB_bio.jpgIn early 2010, Etsy approached Jen and Brian Gubicza of Zooguu to help re-imagine three identical spaces in our offices, which became our phone booths. What resulted were three unique rooms, each with an individual theme. Zooguu proposed the concepts and handled every aspect of the installation. They spent nine weeks painting, hammering, sawing and sewing through the project with enthusiasm, and we at Etsy love the result! Make sure to read about Brian’s giveaway at the end of the post.

When it came to sourcing materials, we visited Build-It-Green in Queens, junk shops and antique stores, and even discovered some curbside treasures. From the tin ceilings (handmade in Texas) to the cabinet pulls (Etsy vintage), we wanted to celebrate Etsy and what it stands for. We made sure each room was a different experience for the Etsy employees, and when the doors were closed, created the feeling as if they had traveled to another location or dimension.


Room 1: The Giant Plush Office
Jen: Since the rooms were small (5’x7’) I wanted to play with scale and create a space that felt as if the person inside had shrunk, very much like an Alice in Wonderland experience. Since it’s in an office, the room is filled with original, over-sized, plush office supplies including a typewriter, cuckoo clock, telephone and of course a red, Swingline stapler. The vintage office supplies for sale on Etsy served as inspiration for many of the plush objects.

Brian: For this room, the goal was to create a villain’s lair — where the Etsy employee actually became the villain. I was inspired by the Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s. It features a streamline art deco style with custom furniture. The Lair comes complete with cape, helmet, raygun, doomsday device, and many other tools of villainy. Every detail is in place, right down to the newspaper clippings and magazine covers, featuring the villain’s inventions and exploits.



Room 3: The Phone Booth

Brian and Jen: Each of us got to design our own dream rooms, so we collaborated on the third and created a space that had something for everyone. Since these little rooms primarily function as private phone rooms, Jen made the entrance door resemble a British phone booth. Once inside, the walls are lined with custom cabinets, behind which are works from a variety of artists, along with toys, bits of pop culture and other surprises. We sourced many pieces from Etsy sellers. The cabinets were all built using leftover materials from a local carpenter that were headed for the dumpster. The idea for the cabinets came from wanting to make an interactive space and to add an element of surprise and discovery.

This project was unlike anything Zooguu had handled before. It was aRobot.jpg dream-like undertaking, during which we learned many new skills. We hope that the people of Etsy enjoy the rooms and we thank them greatly for the opportunity to work on such a unique project!

    I walked by these on my way to craft night a while back and poked my head in. They are super cool in person too! I wanted to touch everything in the plush room but refrained for fear of being kicked out. At the time only the first two were finished, so I'll have to go back and be nosy while I get my craft on.

    The Villians Lair is our favourite, we love Art Deco and Flash Gordon. Oh, to sit there and play Ming the Merciless! What is behind the blue doors, don't keep us in suspense.

    Thanks for your comments! Behind the blue doors are various surprises ranging from a real bug (like the one in the related items) to illustrations, to a view master, to LEGOs. One door contains a key that unlocks another door, etc. That room is all about play and discovery. :)

    Sadly, those iconic red phone boxes are being phased out by British Telecom... apparently they're not vandal-proof enough! The good news is that several villages in my area have been allowed to buy their phone box to preserve the look of the place... although the actual phone is taken away & housed in a modern phone box somewhere else! LOL I wonder why the rest of the world thinks we're crazy!

    I'm all for a fun workplace, and these rooms are really great in their own right, but I would have preferred to see them after some of our other concerns have been dealt with - like customer service. Great job, designers! Not so much, Etsy. Priorities.

Thats more like something for children. my kids would love to play in these, and while they are cute and rad looking, i wish we could just get real phone support

    They are adorable. But like others, I'm kinda left scratching my head as to how these rooms are geared toward anything other than play. And there is no indication of when we might actually be getting real phone support. I shudder to imagine the amount of phone equipment and technical upgrades that could have been purchased with the money used for decorating the rooms.

    Please tell me this is some sort of sick joke on sellers. Where is the functionality? 9 WEEKS? You HAVE to be kidding. A weekend should have sufficed for purposing those rooms to serve the sellers. I'm disgusted. This is where my fees are going?

    Wait I reread. These are private phone rooms? For employees to chitchat on private calls on MY time? Thats even worse. Please get real. I don't expect it though since it hasn't happened in 5 years. I work at home and don't have time for personal calls. I expect my employees, ETSY to work just as hard. Still disgusted.

    Etsy's main offices are in one giant room where everyone works together. Great for collaboration, but sometimes it can be hard to have a one-on-one phone conversation. These phone rooms are for when staff need to have private business calls. We're also investigating offering support by telephone in the future, in which case these rooms will come in handy during the early stages to ensure every member's privacy is upheld. While the design of the rooms is creative and fun, I assure you, they are totally functional as well. Jen and Brian took care to consider that this is a workspace in addition to an artistic installation. The rooms have working telephones (just not shown in the photos) and staff can easily bring a laptop into the room to work.

    If these rooms are for handling customer service calls, then this explains a lot about Etsy customer service and why it’s so appalling. If these rooms are for Etsy employees for private phone calls, then this explains a lot about the maturity of Etsy and it’s employees. Etsy should be completely embarrassed by this.

    I see. So when Rokali said: "Offering phone support is a huge [place for improvement]. And so we actually have three little phone booths here, I’m in one of them right now and we’re setting them up so you know we’re setting up the calling system and we’re hiring a couple people who have experience with that. We have a couple people here who have experience with that so phone support to me is gonna, in terms of the responsiveness of support, trump everything." I thought he meant that they were going to be installing a lot of good technology for the phones and computers so that our problems could be solved quickly... Turns out all that time (and money?) was spent making it pretty and honestly not very functional (or comfortable) looking? I agree that they did a good job decorating and it looks very nice, I'm not knocking that. But when sellers not just want but NEED so many things that they've been asking for and then this comes out, how is that supposed to make us feel? I would love to go to work at a place that's fun, but it seems like Etsy more often forgets that they're a business first. -Z

    We've been hearing about these phone booths for a while. I think that generally the Etsians are outraged because it turns out that it's not phone booths, and phone support for US. It's phone booths, and phone support for the Etsy staff members. Is there EVER going to be an ACTUAL support number?

    This seems like a bad idea for an article. Sellers don't want to know that their listing fees are going to a 9-week redecoration of a cute room for private calls of Etsy employees, and buyers don't want to be shown that there is something more important to Etsy than getting phone support, and that that something is an adorable little room for private phone calls of Etsy employees.

Instead of working on a system where we could call and get support, you've been spending time and money on rooms suitable for children, so you all have space to make private phone calls?     These are cute. They are. ...And, having come from the computer animation world, I know that arty, charming work environments are very modern, and very nice...especially for animators, who practically live at work and need some of the comforts of home... Boy oh boy though....given the state of need here regarding customer service, etc....the begging that sellers have done for this... "Discovery and Play"?...Hey, I am all for it. But this is a multi million dollar business....and you have to at least come across as serious, focused, and professional first....before you can wear a cape and play Dr. Evil. I fear this might have not been in good taste to share, right now, given that so many sellers are going to look at this and think..."Wow...there's my fees at work!). Saddest part? In all honesty? ... I fear even writing any of this. I truly do, because I fear losing my shop...which is a full time occupation for me, with a full time income. (at least until recently..) Etsy......there are fully invested, hard working lives of people hugely enmeshed in your business, and counting on you to be grownups. Art and play is good...but please treat us as if we are priority one...we deserve that..please?

    Cute. Are they suppose to be usable rooms??? For genuine customer support??? Don't you at least need a real phone and a pad of paper? :) Although they are cute, I can't imagine spending more than a couple of minutes in one. Not very comfy looking. How can anyone be pleasant to customers if they are not comfortable? Or am I missing something?

    Zooguu's work is rockin, by the way. Really adorable. I hope this is clear and SEPARATE from an possible criticism that might be said. I think we all agree? I would hate for the artists, who are extremely talented and who obviously put a great deal of work into these, were hurt in any way.

    Great job by the designers! Another etsy FAIL, though. "Private business calls"? As many as three at a time? I get that etsy doesn't really care about its buyers and sellers, but to thumb your noses at us this way... well, that hurts. And it makes you look unprofessional - not that you care about that. Seriously, though, you can introduce a childlike element into the way you do business without being childish. Well, maybe etsy can't, but other companies can, and etsy could learn something from them.

    Unbelievable! Etsy Fails once again. Nothing against the designers of these rooms...just Etsy's decision to use fees and 9 weeks on "play phone rooms" instead of concentrating on the need for real grown-up phone support. It's actually quite disgusting if you think about it.

    stella, we have been told for a long time that phone support is coming. you said etsy is "investigating offering support by telephone in the future," so in the past 6 months no steps have been taken to move toward providing phone support? i'm really confused. etsy said one thing, but it appears it has changed its mind but didn't bother to notify us?

    Another thing that speaks volumes is that all of my items were deactivated today. (Hi, April!) I AM fully compliant with the TOUS, and have had offsite links to my website with totally different items for some time now...They have been there for weeks and weeks now, and were there when I was in the forums posting and discussing one Etsy monstrosity after the next. So, this article blew my lid today, and I still fail to see how this is any sort of real positive change. And where is the telephone number again? Really--no sarcasm here. I could do with that telephone number right now. Once about 2 years ago, I got an email from an admin telling me that I had pictures of other items for sale in the shop within each listing, and that this was against the rules. I wasn't aware of the rule, thanked him for letting me know, removed the offending pictures, and promptly went and read the entire TOUs like a good girl, and like I should have done earlier. Since then, all I've ever done was beg and plead for the changes we need. Then when that proved to be in vain, I started getting frustrated, then the frustration turned into anger and I just can't bite my tongue when I'm angry anymore. I got no warning whatsoever this time. I sent an email to support, and 15 mins. later, I get the form letter informing me that I'm illegally linking offsite. Well, I'm not. Do your homework, please, Etsy and then get back to me and let me know if we're breaking up. I'd much rather not wait for 2 going on 3 weeks like the last time I asked for help.

    i was also just muted in the forums. i don't know what etsy would have a problem with. i have done nothing. the comments i posted above are all the things i have said today. i am following the tous. i have done nothing to break them. why was i forum muted? why are legit sellers treated like this when resellers are treated better?

    Guys, bear in mind that landlines can be redirected to mobile phones. Both phones ring and the call can be received by the phone which is picked up first. So Etsy doesn't need to put all the phone equipment in those rooms, they just made some very private booths to create a better environment for these sort of things. I like that Etsy isn't traditionally corporatey (there's a new word.) If I were an employer that had to work with a phone, I'd do it with a far more joyous heart in that environment with a warm mug of tea, than in your usual corporate office.

    Winchester, I have no problem with the rooms as rooms for business calls. They're cool, they reflect the Etsy vibe, made by Etsians, etc. I just think it was a bit silly to show the community a project they've worked on for 9 weeks for basically their own comfort (which is fine) while continuing to ignore or put off projects, like actual phone support, that sellers and buyers have been wanting for quite a while and have been promised recently.

    So I guess you guys will be shutting down the blatant mis-taggers and the resellers who are thumbing their noses at you next, right? Seeing as you obviously don't actually need to investigate anything to shut a place down and all. Seriously, I love the rooms. They are beautiful and creative and fun. But it would be super rad cool if you could get busy with the coupon codes, batch editing, favorites sorting, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc that we, the people who are paying you to be able to work in the beautiful environment you have the privilege to work in, have been asking for for YEARS now.     i like the design ideas and i thoroughly support hiring etsy sellers to do things for etsy when possible. i love playfulness. i want to say thank you to everyone who has expressed concern in any way for me and the others affected by this. if etsy has changed its tous i will happily comply to whatever they have changed them to. i would prefer to see it in writing for everyone, though. i'm sure this will be the last time i am able to post on a storque article.

    May I say that my heart goes out to those sellers whose livelihood has been affected by this sudden turn of events. I'm heartsick that anyone can be so hugely affected by the capricious actions of another person or persons. To those who have made this decision, I am personally making an appeal to please re-institute the accounts of these sellers. They have families that will be affected by your decision to take this action. That is not fair if they have broken no rules.

    At a previous job, I got to paint really fun scenes in all the private bathrooms-all six of them. Including a glow-in-the dark space themed bathroom. I love the idea of themed private phone rooms! So much better than hearing conversations happening across a huge warehouse turned into an office. There was one lady at this same workplace, we all knew when her husband called. Her voice always went up at least 50 decibels...Hullo Richard! ;)

    I get the idea of making the work place more productive by making it fun... :) But I think many people see this as a slap in the face because there are so many issues that effect people who are trying to earn a living while Etsy staff are decorating their office. The second mistake was publishing this article... You can moderate these comments... it's says so right above the box I am typing in. To cut people off from earning a living because of a comment YOU approved... something isn't right folks. Be adults and fess up to this being a huge mistake.

    At the risk of getting flamed by everyone I'm going to say it anyway... Relax. I highly doubt this project took all of Etsy's resources away from everything else during the implementation. Do you all think every Etsy employee sat in the room for weeks watching glue dry and nails being hammered? And to think that a corporation can only handle one project at a time is just lack of faith. And if you have such lack of faith in someone you are doing business with, do I need to spell out your options? Jen and Brian, your work is amazing and I'm so glad you gave the Etsy employees a space to retreat to. I know first hand how important it is to have privacy during a work day and that it actually makes people more productive (which is needed for those big changes/ideas coming). As far as muting, deactivating, etc., just remember there's more than one side to every story. It sucks for Jen and Brian that you all had to rain on their parade.

    there are many accusations being made against me and the other people who have been deactivated muted. honestly i'm shocked at some of them. nothing has been going on behind the scenes when it comes to me. i have not been talking with admin about anything, i have no disputes with anyone, i don't have anything questionable happening in any way, shape, or form. i make it a point to always be polite to admin. i may disagree with something that etsycorp does, but i do not believe that is ever the fault of any individual admin and i would never approach any of them with that mentality. i work hard to be nice to others, even in the process of disagreeing with them. i'm the kind of person who walks away when someone tries to pick a fight. what you see is, sadly, what you get in my case. and i fully believe that it is in bijoutiful's as well. i consider her a friend and i have a lot of respect for her. she was going through all of this just before i started to. she is a lovely person who makes beautiful things. i am appalled that people are making things up about etsy sellers that they don't know. i have been here since 2006, and selling and buying the whole time. i have helped out people in the forums often, and i promote other etsy sellers on my blog, along with sharing tips for newbies. if you have a question for me, simply ask. please do not make things up. this is a stressful enough situation as it is.

Bijou was simply minding her own business until Etsy made certain things her business. Again we have Etsy pitting sellers against sellers and Etsy is the only winner. Disgusting. So sorry to the designers whose work is being eclipsed by this travesty, you deserve better treatment. I'm sorry Etsy put you in such an awkward spot.

    Wow! What the heck is up with shutting down shops and muting those for voicing an opinion? To me it seems totally contradictory to what Etsy and the community is all about. We are supposed to feel free to say what we feel, not be brushed under the rug and made to feel afraid of speaking our minds. An opinion may not be shared or agreed upon by all, but it should still be allowed to be voiced without the fear of being kicked off Etsy. I am really shocked and saddened by this, and now even I am afraid to state any opinion I may personally have on the subject, or agree with others who have posted here. Is that what Etsy wants it to be like here now?

    I'm curious that the designers have not posted a comment. And let's be clear on this.....most posters have given appropriate kudos to the designers for awesome work, myself included. We did not put them in this untenable situation. They did what they were asked to do. Etsy, however, put it out there for all to see. In response to another poster, yes, I personally would probably have a slightly different reaction if I saw an office equipped with state of the art equipment, phones, computers, etc, ready to get down to business. This is a company with thousands of users, growing daily. Shouldn't the size of etsy, the potential for continued growth, the number of user problems, have dictated a more serious approach to this task. What is the end goal? To the users who have had your shops affected, I will continue to say you have my sympathies. I wish there was something constructive I could do for you.

    While the items created by fellow Estyians are definately well done and highly creative, I have to raise an eyebrow at this article... 9 weeks to redecorate & still offer no real customer service phone support? How immature & typical of you, Etsy. You expect us to take you seriously when you say you're working on getting us what we want, then show us this sort of thing? Doesn't inspire much confidence in your abilities to deliver. But then, we should have known better by now to expect much of anything from the broken promises of the past.

I WAS an employee that had to work in a corporate office and answer the phone all day. You need a real computer in front of you in order to help the customer. And headphones so you can keyboard while talking. What makes a "joyous heart" at a corporate job IMO are the tools to do the job right, a healthy salary, good medical/dental, and plenty of paid time off. Cute office decor is, well, just that. Jen and Brian did an awesome job, and I can understand why Etsy chose them to represent their corporate "image." Read whatever you want into that last sentence LOL

    This thread is making me so sad. It's so exciting for an artist to be asked to be in the storque, and so many people have now made this about themselves and gripes against etsy instead of focusing where the focus should be, on the artist. If you have a gripe, put it in an appropriate place... start a forum thread, gripe til your fingers fall off typing, but gosh, dont be hurting the artist who made these amazing pieces.

    I have never needed to call etsy and I wouldn't if they had phones. To expensive for me (I live in France). I could easily help myself by looking at the FAQ's or contacting support. Like I said in the forum, people always want something they can't have. At least everyone has moved on from talking about lack of views and sales....:)

    I have to say that I am disappointed in some of the comments here. This bothers me, from a standpoint of a fellow artist AND as someone who studied interior design. I love these phone booths, I think they are fabulous, and having seen pictures of what the Etsy offices used to be, very bare bones, all I can say is comfort and color add a lot to making a work environment palatable. We all work in the comfort of our own homes, and I certainly don't begrudge letting admin have a little comfort as well. I don't think that the implementation of a couple comfortable places in the Etsy office takes away from their commitment to their sellers. Good job, designers! :-)

    I don't think people are seriously contending that Etsy can only do one thing at a time, or that the redecoration of their offices prevents them from offering phone support, or that the cute/cool decor is the reason the whole thing is bad. For me the reaction went like this: I looked at the article, said to myself "Wow, cute plushy room," and looked for the new customer support number. Because I assumed that an article about redecorated phone booths meant Etsy had finally set up phone support, and even if the offices looked a bit impractical for 8-hour workdays at customer service, hey, at least they'd finally followed through on their promises. Then I read more of the article and start to think there is no customer support number, and it feels insulting to have thought there was one.

    Hi everyone, This post is about the decor of the office. It's not about our equipment at Etsy or about our plans to offer phone support. The Support Team at Etsy is currently working on instant chat through the Help site, and they are planning their phone support strategy. Figuring out a system that is effective and scalable is a very different project from decorating three phone booths. Please trust that this is something that is being thoroughly planned and handled professionally. I've read comments here with concerns about Support at Etsy. I want everyone to rest assured that this team has made tremendous strides in the past few months. They have hired many new support personnel, developed an onboarding program and have now reduced the wait time for the queue of emails down to almost nothing. There is always room for improvement and doing phone support is one of those potential areas. But we want to do it right, and that takes careful planning. Any member accounts that are currently being handled by Support has absolutely nothing to do with what people say about our office decor. These issues are handled privately and professionally. I'm going to close the comments now because I want my statement here to be visible. Anyone can convo me privately if you'd like to talk about any of these issues.
