Incredible Edible Todmorden

Apr 5, 2013

by Stephanie Madewell

What does it take for a community to buck mass-produced food and go local? Four years ago, residents of Tormorden, England, decided to find out. Incredible Edible Todmorden was born with the goal of making their community “food independent” by 2018 — basically, having the community produce all the foodstuffs it needs to sustain itself.  In this inspiring video, we get a glimpse of the project and how it’s transforming shared public spaces and traditional mindsets.

Do you think your community could become food independent?

What a truly inspiring bunch of people with an infinitely fabulous idea, makes me proud to be English! If just a few people are inspired to start their own Incredible Edible local movements, then just think of how much difference we could make.

Yeah, Todmorden! It starts with one neighbor.

I love it! I think people should take more responsibility for where their food comes from and there is no surer way of knowing your food than by growing it yourself. Its very difficult for one person to grow everything they need, so having a whole community willing to get behind the idea is really great. Great for the food, great for the community!
