Happy Dia de los Muertos! (aka Day of the Dead) The Day of the Dead is the traditional Mexican holiday to pray for and remember friends and relatives who have died. It also has amazing iconography and handmade traditions, like sugar skulls and paper cut-out banners. This collection of Day of the Dead inspired artwork is in reverence to this holiday.

Oh! And in participating with the theme, anyone in the LA area has to check out this Dia de los Muertos festival a fellow Etsier turned me on to. It is the "DOD" festival at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Apparently it is absolutely amazing and many travel from surrounding states just to attend!

i passed by the graveyard today...which today (nov. 1) is for the dead children. they make cool breads shaped like toys and create elaborate wreaths with orange flowers and ribbon. tomorrow is the big night though, celebrating deceased adults-- where they eat at the grave site, favorite foods of the dead, play music in the cemetery, burn copal incense. just thought i would give a few more details for folks that weren't familiar.

I LOVE IT! I'm on my way tomorrow to a beautiful day of the dead celebration in East Los Angeles. This year's celebration will be very meaningful to me as I've recently lost my grandfather. Dia de lis Muertos is a wonderful day to remember and celebrate the lives of those we've lost but continue loving!

For Those Who Came Before Us For those who came before us, Father, Sister, Mother For all who died in war, Brother versus brother For anyone who died of a broken heart May their wishes all come true For all the Gods forgotten, May we remember you For dead movie stars and musicians, Who reached the peak of fame, For the peasants of the past, Who shall remain unnamed. For the Saints and the Healers, Whose torches lit the way For our Ancient Families And the wisdom of their day For those who died of illness, murder or neglect Tonight we honor you In your light may we reflect For all of the lost spirits and ghosts Forgotten but not gone Tonight we dance for you, May you see the break of dawn For those who died unnoticed, Lonely in their graves For those who died as captives, fugitives and slaves For those whose time came early, For those whose time was right Tonight we honor you With our Sacred circle’s light From the ashes, the Phoenix rises, A brand new life to live We wish you love, joy and happiness Among our offerings to give Tonight we dance for you Come join us in our fun For those who came before us, The Party’s just begun. ~by Sopdet Meritehuti

I've always loved this holiday and it's aesthetic. If I could afford it, I would decorate my home with all things "Day of the Dead." I must say, I like the different directions people are taking the aesthetic. I'm always looking for new ways to represent something and some of you guys out in etsy have really hit on some great stuff!

Sonoma has a tradition of celebrating the Day of the Dead. It really is a whole community involvement. Although some in the town say it is too morbid an idea to celebrate, I think it is a wonderful way to remember and celebrate the loved ones we have have lost. I make an altar in my dining room. This year I made 3 different brightly colored Dia Bags and they sold out in a couple of days. Someday, I hope to go to Oaxaca and see the celebrations in person!
