There is only the slightest chance that you might cross Yokoo‘s path in the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. Holed up with the quiet company of old movies, she crochets about 15 hours a day.

Running a one-woman knitwear enterprise from home, Yokoo is an artist, a perfectionist and a ”total control” worker. She enjoys being a part of the entire process: thinking, designing, sketching, picking up the material, creating, photographing, promoting, trading and sending. She still gets butterflies every time she packages up a new order.

YOKOO-stillblog_00.jpg

As a mantra of sorts, Yokoo quotes Woody Allen’s Husbands and Wives: “Giving up his hopes, compromising one’s dreams, is like putting on a grey hat.”

The most evocative handmade portrait yet! However, I don't believe an artist does their best work, when it comes out of the need to be loved. I just don't identify with that, it's kinda more conceptual for me. Perhaps the best work comes, more out of a need to love rather than to be loved :)

A wonderful expose and relate-able. I wish I was half as close to self-realization...unfortunately I feel I have a bit of a way to go. I really appreciate what Yokoo said about 'creating a subworld to protect yourself.' and I am going to work harder on that. Seems the older I get, the more sensitive I am to those things in the world that horrify and sadden me, especially when it comes to children/animals/environment. I thought growing up it would be the opposite-that old adage that we 'harden' with age? It's just not true.

You are so spot on. Your thoughts regarding silence, the nature of creating, and the rewards of being good at what you do, resonate so strongly with my own-- and others'-- often unspoken feelings and thoughts. Being "born to create" is topped only by the opportunity to live the maker's life. Thank you for putting into words such inspiring ideas. Wonderful, Yokoo!!! (And kudos to Pascal on an excellent work, too!)

So smart, in fact, that one can only admire her discipline, skill and originality for the pure art of it as well as the enterprise. I thought I would share the whole poem... somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond by E. E. Cummings somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond any experience, your eyes have their silence: in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me, or which i cannot touch because they are too near your slightest look easily will unclose me though i have closed myself as fingers, you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens (touching skilfully, mysteriously)her first rose or if your wish be to close me, i and my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly, as when the heart of this flower imagines the snow carefully everywhere descending; nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals the power of your intense fragility:whose texture compels me with the color of its countries, rendering death and forever with each breathing (i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens;only something in me understands the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses) nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

There are so many kinds of silence! The peace in the house after a long, busy day at the library (for me). The utter calm stepping outside early in the morning after the first snowfall while it's still dark outside. My absolute favorite silence was the reset stop at sunset near the Badlands with the weeds silhouetted black against the red skyline. Yeah, that's where our common ground stops. There is total chaos in my studio with no uniformity of skeins and a filing system on the fiber wall. Thankfully, the beads each have a condo address,. Your video was wonderful and the article everything we needed.

If I am right about you, Yokoo, the you will read all of these posts. So here's my message to you; you are awesome. From the first time I chanced upon your shop on Etsy, I have always thought, She's awesome. I like to show your shops to my friends because they are art. To see you in this video, hear you speak and learn more about you, just cements that I was right to think so highly of you. You are right to be poor only because those around you were rich, but that must be in money; I feel that you've always been rich in spirit. That is priceless. I am happy that you are doing so well. You inspire me to be better, to keep my shop going. Thank you for the video. Please stay cool, and keep making your beautiful and amazing scarfs. - Jane

Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your "sub world." It has given me a tremendous amount of hope as I "consciously" let go of my "hoarded" world one day at time, one item at a time in hopes of a better unknown. Yes, I can sincerely say, I've been blinded by my hoard and at this time, it's all I can see, but seeing your world makes my unknown a whole lot more aware and keeps me moving forward. Thank you etsy for a place to release my hoard and to so many etsyians who have supported me along this mostly fun, but sometimes arduous adventure. It's the small things that keep me going. Thank you.
