Get the Look: Denise Huxtable

May 25, 2010

by Alison Feldmann handmade and vintage goods

I grew up with a television screen perpetually smudged by an inquisitive nose (…mine). I’d camp out in front of our behemoth set and adjourn to the fashion forward universe of The Cosby Show, usually while reclining in Little-Debbie-stained sweatpants and a half-shirt.

Even as a kid I recognized that middle daughter Denise Huxtable was stylish. She was totally fearless when it came to her appearance and could get away with seemingly anything — oversized smocks, harem pants, jumpsuits, fluorescent face paint, pork pie hats, short hair (especially shocking to a ten-year-old with a despised bowl cut). I imagined her as my fantasy older sister, imparting wisdom about boys and how to accessorize while effortlessly dancing down the stairs to a James Brown funk riff. Denise’s sagging blazers, patterned head wraps and loud style remain iconic as ever. Here’s to becoming our idols.

"Denise" is still as stunning as ever! She hasn't aged a bit and continues to attract everything that surrounds her simply by being present. I had the pleasure of entertaining her child during a sweet fairy party this year. my fairy wing almost took her child's eye out, so i might not be getting calls for her kids' party--but it was a thrill to see her in person! Love the post and reminiscing to the look of my day: )

Denise was definitely one of my childhood role models for fashion and her bold, quirky personality! I also admired her/Lisa Bonet's long-time friend and co-star Cree Summer (aka Freddy on "A Different World"). As a person of mixed heritage, it was so inspiring to see these 2 young women on TV representing girls of color like me with crazy curly hair!

Oh, Denise was the reigning queen of independence & fashion to me - I remember the neon geometric eye-shadow! It makes me not *quite* as ashamed of my purple acid-wash jeans I used to strut around in. What a PERFECT idea to base a Storque article on!
