Get the Look Decor: It’s Easy Being Green

Mar 13, 2011

by Christine Domanic handmade and vintage goods

ChristineThis weekend’s Get the Look Decor is inspired by an eco-friendly, modest brick home on the east coast of Australia. The home’s occupants, Cath, her husband Neil, daughter Marlo and their big old mongrel dog Zac, rely on power from the sun, collect water from the sky and grow their own organic fruit and vegetables.

This family always dreamed of living in an eco-friendly house. After purchasing a small fixer-upper, disaster struck in the form of a split water tank and a busted hot water system. Viewing their misfortune as opportunity, they decided to make their dream a reality. They installed a 5500 gallon water tank, which collects rainwater from roof runoff, and a composting toilet (shown in the above photo) which requires no water or power. Cath adamantly states that “They do not smell!”, and her garden benefits from the nutrient rich compost that is created and ready for each new planting year. The home’s roof has also been outfitted with enough solar panels so that all the energy the family consumes comes directly from the sun.

We are surrounded by forest we know will never be cleared because it is ours.”

I love design like this! I've been reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, and it talks all about living off your own efforts and that of the surrounding community. It really has opened by eyes to all the fuel, distance, and money that goes into receiving products from a distance (most specifically food). Also, I have heard that the large water cisterns for rainwater capture are much more popular in Australia because the lessening availability of potable water sources. I think the rest of the world needs to move in this direction, or else they'll find themselves in a tight spot. Great article! Thanks! This is right up my alley.

Wow, I just searched wikipedia for composting toilet and I am much more well informed on them now! I had no idea that something so practical, eco-friendly and tasteful (not smelly!) as that existed as an alternative for the common toilet system. Now to try to talk my fiancé into the idea.
