Get the Look Decor: Green Thumb

Nov 6, 2011

by Christine Domanic handmade and vintage goods

This weekend’s Get the Look Decor is inspired by the Seattle, Washington home of Ania Alyson, where she lives with her husband James and their two dogs, Ludovic and Madeline. The couple moved into their home in Seattle’s Squire Park neighborhood nearly two-and-a-half years ago and have enjoyed putting their crafty skills and green thumbs to use in many home improvement projects.

Describe your home decorating style.
Each room in our home seems to have a different theme and mood. Our dining room is furnished with mostly mid-century style secondhand pieces. We picked a very bold color for our living room walls and filled it with large contemporary furniture, smaller vintage accents, prints and original work by our favorite artists.

I love our kitchen, the first space we redesigned after moving in — it was so unappetizing (pale peach cabinets and walls) before we finished it. James painted the cabinets white and the walls a beautiful cherry tomato red, took the upper cabinets doors off and replaced all the hardware. Once we splurged on a large kitchen island, filled the windows with houseplants and added a Nikki McClure cherry-pitting “Process” poster, this space really came together.

Thanks to west and south-facing windows, my plants thrive here. We have about 35 houseplants throughout the house — enough to require a watering calendar! I inherited a green thumb and sewing skills from my mom, and both are very handy in creating a cozy home

Did you decide to decorate in this style or was there an evolution to your decorating process?
I’ve always enjoyed open, uncluttered homes. James and I share similar aesthetics, and both of us are very invested in improving our living space, both practically and aesthetically. This is our second home together, but we plan on living here for a very long time, so each month we tackle a few decorating and home improvement projects. Our preferences since we moved into our current home have evolved a bit. I started craving more color-neutral surroundings, and James developed a taste for mid-century design.

Where are your favorite places to shop for home items?
We tend to carefully select furniture to make sure both the older and newer pieces fit well together and are trend-free. We always turn to Craiglist first. If it fails us, we look for more contemporary pieces at IKEA. Some of my favorite items in the house are vintage gifts from our friends. I have a weakness for well-organized thrift stores — I’ll pop in just to quickly glance over my favorite isles on Mondays (after the weekend donations rush). Just last week a 10-minute visit resulted in acquiring an awesome vintage wood and brass Brooks Brothers tie hanger, perfect for inventorying necklaces I’m currently creating for holiday art & craft shows.

What inspires you when it comes to decorating?
My blog feed is endless — between my Google Reader and Pinterest feed, I’ve already bookmarked more decorating projects than one could tackle in a lifetime. Apartment Therapy alone causes time management challenges!

Every day I find new inspiration on Etsy – I spend most of my screen time here. BonnieJones’ stunning photographs prompted me to start collecting vintage frames and doilies. NestingEmily’s aesthetic turned my attention to raw materials, earth tones, and calming interiors. I frequently peek into Ethanollie’s shop to study her gorgeously staged photos, and I check out Enhabiten’s Flickr and Etsy shop to get inspired by her beautiful use of vintage textiles. I also love filling my creative space with StasiaB’s drawings and fabric collages. Etsy is full of so many talented, inspiring artists!

What is your favorite part about your home?
I love that we live in a century-old house (a dream I didn’t think would ever come true!) and that, for the first time, we get to decorate our home any way we want. I am really happy we found a very unique stacked-flats duplex that allowed us to move in with our best friends Robin & Danielle, who are our downstairs neighbors. Not having to take my slippers off to share a spontaneous meal with them or play a game of Settlers of Catan is priceless.

Does your home hold any strong memories?
Little by little, we are creating new memories and cultivating traditions we started years ago. Together with our neighbors, we love throwing summer BBQs and outdoor movie parties in the large backyard we share. Co-hosting holiday gatherings for our closest community is much easier now (access to an extra fridge and chairs comes in handy for everyone during Thanksgiving!). We’re all set on living here until we get very old, so many more memories will be made!

Thank you all for your wonderful compliments! Chiquiita - our dining room walls are a very pale gray "dove" color. We took great care selecting it & we're so happy with the result! TinsNThings - I used to live in a true co-op with 5 other folks when I was single & newer to Seattle... It was a wonderful experience! Consensus decision making, resource sharing, weekend work parties, and monthly potlucks. A great time in my life! I'm really happy that we found this "best of both worlds" solution - privacy & community under one roof! Jbeaudet - I highly recommend starting with a little windowsill farm. At our previous place I lost many plants because it was such a dark apartment, and only the window plants survived :-( Megan - it was fun hanging out with you yesterday!
