Every day, our community grows in unexpected and delightful ways. For our Fresh Shops series, sellers who have been on Etsy for a handful of months or are waiting for those first few sales introduce themselves. Here’s a warm welcome to all our newbies!
Hi! I am Rachel Ignotofsky. I was born and raised in New Jersey on a healthy diet of cartoons and pudding. As a child, when I wasn’t drawing on the walls, I was constantly making up my own stories and acting out all the characters. Now that I am grown up, not much has changed. I am still drawing and still telling stories. That is what my Etsy store is all about.
I graduated in 2011 with a BFA from the Tyler School of Art and was hired by Hallmark Cards before my graduation. I now live in beautiful Kansas City, where I get to illustrate and design greeting cards and retail products. Then at night I can’t help myself…I draw even more.
I like to plunge head-first into a project by whipping out the pens immediately. I do lots of small nervous line work to create texture and form. I then use textures and bold shapes to add fun exciting colors and create form. Everything is hand drawn, and then put together on the computer like a puzzle. Each art print is on 100% rag cotton art paper, and printed archival inks allow the richness and detail of the color and line work to shine.
I am inspired by the TV shows I grew up on: Pee-Wee’s Play House, Ren and Stimpy and many others. I love that moment in a cartoon where you zoom up on a very cute face…realize it’s gross and covered in pimples. I strive to capture that same duality in my work. It is very sweet and charming, but it also has an edge or story to it that makes you look twice.
Besides art, science and history were my favorite subjects in school. That excitement to learn about the world is still an important part of my life, and it shows in the work that I do. Whether it was collecting bugs and rocks as a child or studying human anatomy as an adult, the story of how our world works is one I like to play with and use as a narrative in my work.
My art prints are made for adults and kids alike. I don’t think there is an age where someone stops laughing or learning. That is what my work and my life are all about.
