My name is Prangchat Sathianthammawit, but everyone calls me Deedee. I was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, but I moved to New York City seven years ago for my studies. I work full time as a menswear designer and operate my men’s accessories collection, W.B.THAMM.
Being a menswear designer in the New York fashion industry is like being a small fish in a big pond, but I’ve gained so much experience being here. Until now, I never had a chance to work on what I wanted – fulfilling myself – so I decided to explore my creativity and try to do something that truly reflects my personality and interests.
W.B.THAMM is a one-person operation. I do it all – creating concepts, designing collections, branding, packaging, sourcing materials, sewing and shipping. The beginning of my process is all about selecting color palettes and finding prints and patterns that go with the season’s story and inspiration. High-quality fabric is a must. I scout around the garment district to source fabrics; finding the right ones is pretty difficult. There are so many limitations when running a small collection – it requires a lot of flexibility.
My collections can be inspired by anything that catches my eye, simple things like graphic design, vintage pieces, books or words. Researching trends is also an important part of my process. One of my favorite activities is checking out what people wear on the street; living in the city is a huge benefit. I like to know what people are wearing so I can create collections that suit people’s everyday outfits.
When I launched my first collection on Etsy 10 months ago, I felt uncertain about sales and feedback because I was new. The exposure that I have received has been incredibly awesome – I have connected to people around the world. Etsy is a great marketplace for anyone who loves and appreciates creativity.
