Hello! My name is Lindsay, and my husband Johnnie and I are the owners of Second Shot. We make functional art from recycled skateboards in Ontario, Canada.
John originally went to school for auto body repair, and he worked in that industry for ten years. Once he acquired tools to work from his own home shop, he took freelance jobs painting cars and customizing personal items – everything from motorcycle helmets to guitars. Eventually he began to combine this work with his love for skateboarding. The “skate art” that proudly hung in our living room eventually became Second Shot.
Second Shot was born from a passion for skateboarding, skate culture, and art. We work with used, broken and unwanted skateboards that have been donated from local skaters, skate parks, and skate shops. Almost all skateboards are made from seven layers of cross-laminated maple ply, and some layers are dyed different colors, depending on the brand and manufacturer. Once the grip tape is removed, the recycled skateboards are ready to be cut, sanded, and given a second shot. When pieces from different skateboards are compressed together, you get a one-of-a-kind, colorful piece of wood. You can make just about anything you can imagine with it – from bird sculptures to sunglasses and watches. Every item we produce is handcrafted with extreme attention.
Our favorite item John has ever made is the recycled skateboard guitar. He started making it about two years ago, and hundreds of hours and lots of help from many friends have gone into it. To make the guitar, he veneered recycled skateboards to an old guitar and clear-coated and wet-sanded numerous times for shine and protection. The neck, fret board, pick guard, and pick-ups were are handcrafted from recycled skateboards as well. We have a love and appreciation for all types of art, and the skate guitar represents so many of them: skateboarding, music, craftsmanship, refinishing and woodworking.
Etsy has given us a platform to reach an international audience so we can continue stay home with our daughter and live a creative life. Every dollar we spend is like casting a vote for the kind of world we want to live in. It’s empowering to know that by buying from an artist, local business, or Etsy shop we are supporting our community and someone else’s dreams, plus we’re getting a quality product. It’s the same way our customers support us when they decide to make a purchase from Second Shot.
We have always been creative, do-it-yourself people, but taking Second Shot from a passion to a business changed everything. Once John decided to take a risk, quit his job, and invest all his time in Second Shot, our business went to the next level. We have had to make sacrifices to do what we love, like sell our home and downsize, but the rewards have been beyond what we had hoped for. We are living our dream, and we’re excited for what the future holds. Taking a chance can be scary, but it’s like the saying: “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.”
