Hi, I’m Heidi. My shop is called redcruiser, and it features a collection of illustrated, hand-lettered paper goods. My work celebrates seasonal gardening, markets, eating and drinking. I live in Minneapolis with my husband, two daughters, and golden retriever Lulu (who is by my side at all times).
I left my full-time design job over four years ago to have more flexibility for my family and my hobbies – cooking, gardening, drawing, and painting. Redcruiser is a combination of all those things. I use watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, and different textures to create my illustrations, and work in my basement at weird hours of the day. If I can drag myself out of bed, 6 a.m. (with a cup of coffee) is my favorite hour.
One of my favorite projects is the seasonal harvest calendars and prints I started making three years ago. I initially made them as gifts for my family because seasonal and local eating is something that is important to me (and delicious!). This year, I also created a beer and food pairing calendar. It has been great hearing from so many different people that it was going to be the perfect gift for their husband, brother, dad, or friend. I love knowing that my products are functional, meaningful, a bit educational, and cross-generational.
I really try to be conscientious of what I am creating – there is so much “stuff” out there and I don’t necessarily want to add to it. However, art, illustration, and great design can add so much to the energy of life. I make sure to print with 100% PCW paper, and use the most of each sheet. Whenever possible, I source organic materials and use a minimal amount of packaging for shipping.
Etsy has been a great space for me to explore my own meaningful products. It has also been a fantastic place to get in touch with people who are interested in the work I’m doing, and to connect and feel part of such a creative community.
At the end of the day, my creative business has enhanced my life. It is really wonderful to look at my Etsy shop and realize I created everything in it, and I feel good about it all! I have always loved making things for as long as I can remember, and making things that are close and true to me feels like an honest way to share my art and illustration.
