Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

My name is Hailey Smedley, and I knit and crochet chunky scarves and accessories in Guthrie, Oklahoma. I am a stay-at-home mother of two and married to my high school sweetheart, who picks up insane amounts of yarn for me. I design and write all of my own patterns, and I’m the dreamer, maker, and sole person behind Ozetta.

My shop is dedicated to my great-grandmother Marjorie Ozetta, who taught me the foundations of knitting and crocheting when I was 10 years old. I would stay with her for weeks in the summer months, and we would wake up early to cook breakfast, watch movies, and curl up in her handmade quilts, crocheting. She always said “little Hailey, you can do anything.” I used to only pick up my needles every year around the holidays, but when she passed away in 2007, I picked them up and never put them down. I wanted to keep her memory alive in some way, so I opened my shop.

My work involves both knitting and crocheting, and each piece I make is full of meaning, love, and attention to detail. I get excited when I work on something new – it’s almost like I can’t rest until I finish. I attach a handcrafted, wooden Ozetta tag to each piece, which, coupled with my craftsmanship, makes it authentic and unique. I think when people read about my shop, they feel as though they are wearing a part of a story, and to me this is more important than anything.

Etsy gave me a place to live out my dream and reach people worldwide. Before I started selling, I was enamored with the thought of receiving something handmade, and was thrilled I could own something crafted by an individual. I knew I wanted to be a bigger part of Etsy and create knitted or crocheted accessories for people just like me. After all, there is truly nothing like the warmth and coziness of a handmade scarf.

My shop has given me the chance to be my best person. I have always been creative, but now it is a constant in my life. I think when you are surrounded by something you love doing, you become greater. When you invest your creativity and hard work, it shows. Ozetta has given me the chance to stay at home with my two little ones and enjoy time with them while they are young. I live a very simple life, surrounded by my family in a place I love.

Hailey, I love your story! It hits home because my grandmother taught me how to treadle when I was nine. When she passed away 15 years later I wanted a treadle sewing machine to connect with her. It is wonderful to have a connection with ones grandmother, not many of us are so lucky. Your work is wonderful and living a simple life surrounded by family in a place you love is better than riches on some far off place without family. You have riches many can only dream of. Congratulations!

Thank you for featuring such a wonderful shop! I love that Hailey learned her craft by her grandmother! My grandmother was so warm and loving. She always put trinkets & treats for us in the drawer of a lovely mahogany side table every time we came for a visit. Her living room had a panoramic view of rocky mountain peaks; I could sit and stare at them for hours. My grandmother had a tiny warm kitchen that smelled of home cooking, homemade gravy & dumplings and Christmas bread and cookies during the holidays. But best of all she gave some of the warmest coziest hugs ever!

How wonderful that you spent so much time with your great-grandmother! I never knew any of my great-grands and didn't get to spend much time with my grandparents either, but I do remember one of my grandmothers and how she painted and decorated cakes, which inspired me to learn to do both as a kid. What wonderful memories you have of her, and how touching that you have made a business in her memory, doing something she taught you and that you shared. It's those connections of the heart that truly matter in life. I love the things you make, would love to have one (not that I'd get much chance to wear them here in Florida!) I stayed home with my kids when they were growing up, homeschooled too, and had a little side business doing decorative painted accessories for a gift shop. Wish etsy had existed then! I wish you continued success and fulfillment, and happiness for you and your family.

What a lovely shop and wonderful story to evoke the warm memories of grandmothers who shared their love with us by teaching us what they loved. My grandmother gave me a needle and thread when I was three, and instilled a love of sewing that has enriched my life. The love we felt from those who taught us is brought back and shared every time we practice what we were taught.

Wonderful story of a family that passes on not only that good sense of family but knowledge and skills that last many generations of lifetimes! I love your work, your work area so wonderfully classic, and especially your little wooden tags! I wish I had a grandmother to have taught me my skills back in the day, but I basically learned what I know on my own with a dash of help from my mother whilst sitting at my sewing machine next to her at her sewing machine. Your great sense of family is envious.....much luck to you!

So many blessings have come your way. you work so hard and you do what you love. it shows so much hailey. you do not realize the impact you have made on people's lives because of what you do and the love that you put into each and every piece. i am so over the moon proud of you and what you have become. a wonderful wife, mother, crocheter, businesswoman. the excitement i always encounter with you when you sale to a customer is just amazing ! i know good things will continue to come for you. and you have to always stay focused and remember to always be thankful, and i do know that you are:) i love you so very much~ your mom

Your craft and the way you have marketed your shop are all a wonderful tribute to your grandmother. I already know and relate how hard you work on your pieces and the love that goes into it...but the care and effort you have put into branding your shop and making it successful is evident and obviously paying off. My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 6, and I've been doing it ever since. It hits the heart in relation to our inspirations. (formerly as AnniesWearableArt here-life changes and we must flow with it.) I put so much focus on the design and the making (all freehand for me.) and I have always had trouble 'selling myself.' The work has mostly spoken for itself, but your feature reminds me to lend more love to the 'branding' part. Congratulations on your success and this feature. I agree, so well-deserved. Beautiful shoppe.

Hailey, I had begun to despair that handcrafted items were becoming things of the past. (I was part of the craft show generation a few years back, but the stores began mass producing items at much cheaper prices and many noncrafters just didn't seem to appreciate the quality of handcrafted creations.) Your love of knitting and creativity with things you make ring true in my life now that I have retired at 60 yrs. of age. I was lost in my own home, because I had never been a "stay at home" Mom and had always been in a rush when I would arrive home from work. So recently I decided to learn a craft and went to Joann's craft store to ask about a knitting class. A beautiful white-haired lady nearby heard my question to the clerk about learning to knit and told me that she would teach me. I was thrilled! Every Tues. I meet with the ladies at the "50 Forward" group at our local YMCA and we learn from each other the craft of knitting. Now I am able to make scarves and throws for my children and grandchildren, and am investing in one of our granddaughters the art of knitting. She is excited, too!. I will visit your page to see your new entries regularly! Thank you for sharing with us!

Hailey, A mirror you see and echoes that make me shiver, Consumed by anxiousness to lend a rest only to plan what the new day will create. Before the Sun to crest and bring my favorite light I jump from my bed with no fight, It so enlightening to hear, feel and see other vessels that are powered by love, passion, vision where nothing less than perfection from within is in acceptance. Etsy has given this gift of presence. Then to work with clients letting them make decisions, colors, design etc. really including them in the journey. There responses boost my creative edge and together we create what hasn't. Moved I am cause the mirror you see, the echoes I heard in the feature sounded like me. Larry

Isn't it fun to think and ponder........maybe some day your children (and my own sons) will be the next generation to come along - learning from their grandmothers and turning it into something more than just memories! My Grandmother taught me to love textiles, my Aunt and Mom showed me how to knit. My Mom is the only fantastic lady of the three that I can still sit and knit with, but we celebrate the others every time we do so! I agree with you - it is an amazing way to pay tribute to those who have impacted us and are no longer physically with us. Thank you for putting yourself, your WHOLE self out there! Such an inspiration.
