My name is Noémie Vaillancourt and I’m a fashion designer based in Montréal, Canada. I founded my line, Noémiah, in 2008.
Before entering the world of fashion, I studied French literature. My venture into creativity and designing began when I started making feathered jewelry in 2008. I still remember how much fun I had doing my first photo shoot on my tiny balcony with a friend. Noémiah started small, and I learned almost everything I know today on my own – from craftsmanship and customer service to how to market my collection.
Eventually, my love for making jewelry paved the way for designing clothing and accessories. Professional courses in tailoring, alterations, and pattern drafting taught me so many skills essential to my work today, while internships with Montreal-based designers Valérie Dumaine and Travis Taddeo gave me the experience and strength I needed to launch my first ready-to-wear collection last spring.
My inspiration is different for each collection; regardless of the season, what really gets my creativity flowing is the search for the perfect balance between minimal, clean cuts and feminine, playful touches. I collaborate with my friend Paule T.B. to come up with most of the illustrations that are printed or embroidered on my pieces. Creating printed fabrics together is one of my favorite parts of the whole process – the possibilities are endless, and it’s exciting that my line can be so personal.
I’m proud to say I frequently collaborate with other artists and artisans on various projects. I believe this desire to create something beautiful and to share my passions is something I learned by being part of the Etsy community. Etsy taught me to be an entrepreneur and to value handmade and high-quality work. My hope for the future is to export my line to the United States and sell my pieces in small, independent shops there. And of course, to never stop having fun creating!
