My name is Anit Hora, and I’m the founder of the Brooklyn-based natural beauty brand, Mullein & Sparrow. I live in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
I studied design and international trade at the Fashion Institute of Technology. After working as a fashion designer for seven years, I started feeling burned out and dissatisfied. I decided to take a huge leap of faith and travel to South America in search of some answers. As I backpacked around, I thought about how I want to live and what makes me truly happy. On the road, I was exposed to plant medicines and natural remedies, and something clicked: I was so drawn to this natural approach that when I returned to New York, I enrolled at the Aveda Institute to learn more about holistic skincare and Ayurvedic principles.
After my studies at the Aveda Institute, I continued exploring herbal medicine and began experimenting with making my own products. Around that time, I also became a certified yoga teacher; Mullein & Sparrow was created from the overlap of these experiences. In the beginning, my focus was on teas and tinctures, but soon all of my friends and customers started asking for beauty, so that’s the direction I went in. About three years ago, I went through a bad breakup, and decided to get my act together and get serious about my business. And that’s just what I did.
I love everything about the herbs I work with: their scents, textures, and medicinal properties. My current favorites are immortelle and vetiver – there’s something so timeless, grounding and classic about them. When I’m formulating new products, I prefer to be alone in the studio. I spend hours perfecting my formulas, making and remaking them until I’m satisfied with the end result. Phase two of product development involves testing new products out on everyone I know to make sure they look good, feel good, and most importantly, work!
I’m constantly impressed by all the makers on Etsy – I can’t believe so much creativity exists on one platform. This year, I got to work with Etsy Wholesale at the National Stationery Show and Etsy Open Call; I’m grateful to be part of such a supportive team. In the future, I want to keep coming up with new solutions for different skin types. I also want to focus on creating products that are beautiful and giftable.
