Hello there! My name is Katie Kelly, and I’m the metalsmith, artist, and maker behind Laurel and Lime. I live deep within the humidity of Clearwater, Florida, which is located along the Gulf Coast.
I started making jewelry after I took a silversmithing course about five years ago. After that, I applied my newfound skills to other metals and processes. For me, there’s no better way to learn and develop my style than setting out on my own, experimenting, and following my instincts. I love to give my materials a new lease on life; many of my pieces are made from salvaged or natural materials. My jewelry isn’t just about the present, but rather about honoring the past and transforming it into a brighter future.
I find endless possibilities when I have raw materials in front of me. I try hard not to overwork my materials, but to help them shine and become something of pure and simple beauty. I’m inspired by natural textures, repetitive patterns and organic shapes; I often find myself playing with those ideas in my work.
The Etsy community has always been of great value to me. The amount of support that is exchanged here is overwhelming, and for that I am grateful. I also couldn’t be happier to be a part of the handmade movement – nothing compares to buying directly from an artist. Each piece has its own character and has been infused with time, love and energy by its maker.
I’m not sure I’ll ever be completely satisfied as an artist. I continually have the urge to learn new processes and experiment with new methods. But don’t worry, I won’t be abandoning Laurel and Lime for other things; instead, I plan to add to its journey. In the short term, I’d love to start casting in recycled metals; in the long term, I’d love to try welding, woodworking and perhaps sculpture.
