by Michele Tansey handmade and vintage goods

I’m Michele Tansey. My husband Ryan and I are co-owners of Homestead Seattle, where we find and restore vintage and antique furniture and home goods. We live and work above our showroom in Seattle, Washington. Our team includes my brother, Zach; our upholsterer, Kevin; and our friend, Tori.

I started Homestead Seattle in 2009 because I love old furniture. At the time, I was doing a lot of experimenting with my personal design style, which meant constantly switching out the pieces in my home. While traveling around and searching for myself, I noticed an abundance of under-appreciated furniture – most of which would end up in a landfill if it didn’t make it into the right hands. I wanted to get these pieces of history into the homes of people who would honor and preserve them.

After unofficially working together for months, Ryan joined me full time in November 2011. The following month, we had a devastating house fire that forced us to prove how committed we were to our dream. We spent 2012 rebuilding our home, our lives and our business. That year, we re-branded our business, launched our website, expanded nationally (thanks to Etsy) and opened up an official shop in-house.

We don’t like to limit Homestead Seattle’s selection to a particular era or style. We draw a great deal of inspiration from period-accurate set design. In that regard, shows like Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men and Downton Abbey are a few of our favorites. We strive to curate a diverse and timeless collection relevant to current and upcoming interior design trends.

We travel throughout the Pacific Northwest looking for vintage and antique pieces that have clear potential but need some work. The needs vary for each piece, but we do everything from basic cleaning and polishing to complete internal and external restoration. For me, the most important reasons for having this business are to save furniture and provide a better alternative to buying new. Improving and extending the life of something that already exists is the eco-friendly thing to do. We want to help end a cycle of consumerism that wastes money on lower quality, disposable furniture.

I ran other peoples’ shops for years, selling a product that I knew was manufactured unethically and made to be disposable. I didn’t feel proud of that. My career didn’t align with my morals, it didn’t fulfill me creatively, and it kept me from spending time with my husband, family, friends and pets. Now I can sincerely say I’m proud of myself and our shop. I have a clean conscience about what we are selling, I believe in the inherent value of our product, and I get to work from my beautiful home with the people (and animals) that I love.

As someone who has seen a family business & cottage go up in flames, I know how devastating fires can be - especially a home fire. It is a great story of determination, rebirth & renewal - for your business & the items that you sell.

You show to be the real and true phoenix in all this! I love the chairs in your show and like how they complement each other and yet are so different in style and make, clearly showing your ideas and style for them and how well they still can just 'make' any space special. Congratulations! Very well deserved and much continued success.

It's really great that Michele and Ryan are rescuing old furniture and giving it a new life, not only because a lot of vintage pieces are possessed of a quality of craftsmanship no longer found in most commercially produced goods, but also because furniture is so big, and takes up so much space in landfills. Anything we can do to reduce waste, and also to honor and appreciate quality pieces, is worth doing.

Sometimes it seems incredible that new items are being manufactured at the rate they are given the oceans of discarded but functional pieces filling thrift stores, storage spaces, and landfills. Businesses like this, that repurpose and beautify are so important and so nifty too!

Older furniture often has more character and is sturdier than much of the currently produced new furniture. I have been lucky enough to inherit a variety of interesting and beautiful pieces that I love and hope my kids will inherit someday too. I think what your business does is wonderful, for both the preservation and appreciation of vintage pieces, and the reduction of waste. And it's so fun to decorate your home with unusual furniture, and create a style all your own. I'm sure your business inspires a lot of people to furnish and decorate creatively and uniquely!

What an awesome feature! I run a vintage shop and when I tell people about it, I sometimes feel like "vintage" has become an overused trend word. But really, it's about quality and sustainability and digging deeper to realize that objects should be given second chances instead of being disposed of at the drop of a hat. Thanks for highlighting this inspiring seller!

Congratulations on the feature! Your approach is one I have very much taken for our own home: repairing, refinishing, and reupholstering (well, hoping to eventually, once I get the materials and have the time) perfectly good vintage/antique furniture, instead of constantly buying brand-new, lesser-quality, often overpriced furniture. A few years ago, I worked with my mother on the reupholstery of most of the furniture in her living room, and I can attest to the difference some relatively simple repairs and the replacement of worn-out fabric--and sometimes cushions--can make, not to mention how much money one saves in the long run! Keep up the amazing work!

It drives me crazy to see beautify well made items discarded. Often because no one wants to expend a little effort to repair a minor defect. Thank you for doing what you are. I too work with unloved items but in a little different way. ( and on a much smaller scale it seems) Keep up the good work!!!

Thank you for sharing your personal ethics behind your vision for your business - I am 100% in agreement with your credo! So many beautiful pieces with so much life left in them ....why would anyone want cheap composite wood when vintage is made from solid, beautiful wood and leaves no carbon footprint! I consider myself a " rescuer" as well and wish you success and growth. Beautiful shop.

what a spectacular feature. one of my favorite thus far. your story of an actual "trial by fire" was amazing - and look what you were able t build on after that. I also love the mention of having a "clean conscious" with regard to what you sell. Oh that more companies would take that stance.

First, your story of loss and rebuilding is inspirational and nothing short of heroic and, second, your philosophy of saving and refurbishing items for future generations to enjoy and cherish is right up my alley. I am trying to do the same thing with tea towels. There is such craftsman and artistry in vintage and I am delighted that your work and views are being celebrated on Etsy. Very nice shop! I have renovated a bar cart myself. It was made by my great grandfather. My Dad had used it and was shocked when I ripped off his precision appled decorative vinyl and painted the whole thing white. The old castors squeak but carry a whole dishwasher load of china to the buffet for me! And plus I like their industrial look. I wonder what the next generation will do with it? Maybe cover it with vinyl again?
