Hello, my name is Katie. My husband Andy and I are the newlyweds behind Bly Design. We make jewelry from our sunny studio right here in North Carolina.
With a background in classical piano, I have always had an artistic, creative spirit. I discovered my passion for jewelry design after coming across some old chandelier crystals in my late grandmother’s house. I was struck by the beauty of each crystal, and I yearned to create a necklace that would keep one close to my heart. Over the years, I began refining my techniques in metalwork and was overwhelmed by the response from my friends and family. I decided to launch Bly Design in 2009 as a way to make my pieces accessible to my fans.
When I met Andy in 2012, we quickly bonded over a mutual love for creative, handmade goods. Since then, we’ve both quit our day jobs to work on Bly Design full time. We spend a lot of time studying metalwork from past eras and thinking of new ways to push the envelope. We are inspired by travel near or far – stepping out of the studio allows us to gain a new perspective and clear our minds.
I tend to get ideas for designs at night, sometimes while dreaming. Andy and I discuss our dreams frequently, which often leads to collaboration. Sometimes we come up with designs that we don’t know how to execute, but that’s the fun part! We’re always learning in the studio – if we don’t know how to do it, we’ll figure it out. In fact, a lot of our original designs come from mistakes (like our resin opals, which now grace most of our collection!). We believe it’s important to allow ourselves the freedom to see mistakes as new avenues to explore. Even if it proves unsuccessful, we know we’re on the path to realizing our own unique potential.
Etsy has given us a platform to sell products that come from our heart to people who appreciate handmade goods as much as we do. It has also enabled us to work from home full time, which gives us the ability to travel and live anywhere in the world. We are heavy dreamers, so our eyes are always looking to the future: right now, we are working on a bridal collection featuring moonstones and mixed metals. We never thought we would venture into the bridal industry, but after planning our own wedding, we realized there is a need for fresh ideas. We plan to launch a small collection of heirloom-quality hair accessories, necklaces and earrings at the end of April. Stay tuned!
