I’m Sarah. I live in a small town in beautiful Ontario, Canada, and run my shop, Blue Birds Fly Boutique. I make infinity scarves, turban headbands, and arm warmers, and am slowly venturing into apparel.
My mom taught me how to sew years ago, and I was immediately addicted. Back then, I was really into streetwear and loved huge, wide-leg pants. Since they were really hard to find in shops, I began making them for myself. I started getting stopped all over Toronto by people asking where I got my pants. I guess it gave me a little extra courage to continue along my creative path. I’ve always loved working with my hands (I’m actually a former dental hygienist).
My day usually consists of too many cups of very strong coffee, some last minute sewing before packaging up orders, obsessively rechecking the addresses of my packages, then finally a trip to my local post office. I try to make things that I love, and then just hope that others will love them too.
My favorite part of running this shop is the photography and photo editing. It’s another whole world of creativity that I’m just getting into. I’ve learned so much and have so far to go, but I truly am enjoying the journey. I also enjoy hunting for fabric and supplies. I often have an idea of what I’m looking for, but love to keep an open mind and search for those unexpected treasures. Those treasures usually end up getting me totally sidetracked, dreaming about their potential, but I guess that’s all part of the creative process.
I firmly believe in following your heart, regardless of what anyone else may think. It was a real leap of faith to follow mine, but I’ve learned in life that it’s the only way to live. I opened up my Etsy shop with no expectations. I just thought “what will be will be.” I was actually quite nervous to jump in, but I’m so glad I did. I love connecting with my customers, and seeing people enjoy something that I’ve made. It’s amazing to be able to make money at something that I love to do.
Etsy allows me to run a business that is personal. Not only that, I am also an Etsy shopper, and have acquired items I truly cherish. There’s just something extra special about those pieces, almost as if a friend has made them for me. I love and am proud to be a part of this community.
There is a real sense of pride and ownership that comes along with running my own business. It’s actually really hard for me to not work. I’ve learned that balance is important, and breaks are essential. Family and friends are priceless and I’m so blessed to be surrounded by them. I’m a bit of a sensitive cat, so I’ve also had to develop a thicker skin. You realize that life isn’t perfect, and you can’t please everyone (as hard as you may try!). I try to do my best, learn from my mistakes, and treat people how I want to be treated.
