Tell us a bit about yourself.
my actual name is anda lewis. i’m almost 29 years old. i have a BFA in video art but for the last six years since graduating i’ve spent all my time teaching myself to sew and reading non-fiction books about cognitive science. and riding bicycles and staying up late. i used to live in richmond virginia –which is the best city on earth– but now i live here in queens with my amazing and impressive boyfriend peter corrie. when people ask what my vocation is i usually say “substitute teacher,” which is true.
What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it?
when i was three my dad worked at this datacenter in virginia beach, and when they’d throw out the old computer programs (the type that were a giant box of green-and-white paper punch cards), he’d rescue them from the trash with the idea that he’d “analyze” them or use them for something later. but really they just sat collecting dust in the attic and eventually my mom started doling out the cards one by one when i’d pester her for drawing paper. and so all my early creative output was spent ruining some antique computer artifacts. soon afterwards my parents taught me to print “from amanda with love” so i could sign my drawings. that was the first sentence i knew how to spell.
What inspires you? Where do your ideas come from?
wandering around and watching people, reading about buckminster fuller, most everyone i know in richmond, every memory i can remember having, and a liberal amount of cheap champagne.
What are your favorite materials?
those square iron-on patches you can buy at the drugstore. and anything that will lend itself to ironing. thrift-store clothes. a really simple combination of fabric, thread, buttons and my amazing (google it) gameboy-powered sewing machine. sharpie markers, sticker paper, spraypaint and cardboard. press-type lettering. old children’s science textbooks from the 60s and 70s. 126mm film, plastic cameras, and cassette tapes.
What is your favorite color?
Any tips for selling handmade stuff?
your mom is really the best free advertising you have.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
i have ideas all day. i also read and draw and move around alot. and tell stories. and explore new york.
How can Etsy be improved? Any feature requests?
make alchemy less awkward. but it might be that i’m just not doing it right. oh, and give etsy a “shopping cart” feature.
