Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello! My name is Judy and I live with my loving and supportive husband in New York City. I am passionate about creating beautiful things with my own two hands. I am very grateful to Etsy for providing a venue to sell my jewelry on line.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Apart from creating jewelry and running my Etsy shop, I try to keep my life in balance by exercising and eating healthy. I love traveling and exploring different ethnic foods. I have probably tried most of ethic foods available in New York City! These days, I am learning to cook different kinds of pasta dishes. It’s really fun!
What first made you want to become an artist?
I’ve loved to draw, paint and make things since I was a child. Instead of playing with dolls, I made doll clothes and accessories for my younger sister and cousins. Nobody taught me how to do those things, so my family and relatives always said that I have artistic genes in me. My father also inspired me as an artist. He loves photography and the beauty of nature and has helped me open my eyes to the world of art. During my childhood years, I attended my father’s art school for children and learned a lot there. Growing up in South Korea, arts and crafts were a part of my everyday life. So, since I was a child, I considered myself an artist.
Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
I love to create jewelry that I would love to wear, or that is meaningful to others. I focus on those ideas and branch out from there. I love simple hoop earrings. I bought so many of them in my lifetime. So, one day, I decided to make and list them in my Etsy shop. So far, it turned out well. I also love creating bridal jewelry. I always feel honored whenever brides order bridal jewelry from my shop. It’s a good feeling knowing that people will be wearing my jewelry on one of the most significant days of their lives. These days, I focus on personalized hand stamped sterling silver jewelry and accessories because these are meaningful and personal to the buyers. I feel a sense of accomplishment, whenever I receive positive feedback from my customers, which encourages me to create more new designs.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
I cherish a bamboo picnic basket that I made with my aunt when I was in high school. I had so much fun making it and it’s still in a great condition. I also treasure family photos taken by my father.
Name your top five books, movies, songs/musical groups, and web sites besides Etsy.
Books: The Holy Bible (It’s the all time best seller!), A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink (Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future => Hurray! That’s us, Etsians), Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery, The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald.
Movies: Under The Tuscan Sun, Wall-E (I love animations!), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, When Harry Met Sally, All of the Indiana Jones movies.
Songs/Musical Groups: I love Jazz! I love all songs by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. I also enjoy listening to Bach, Mozart and Andre Bocelli.
What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Advice…well, I can say what helped me in the beginning to bring me this far. I am still working to improve on products, photos and promotions.
* I read and apply what I can in the Etsy Seller Handbook. Articles in the Seller Handbook helped me a lot and I am grateful to those staff members who worked hard to put them together.
* I ask many questions in the forums. Everyone is so helpful.
* I try to enjoy the process and take good care of myself.
* I develop products I believe in. I make realistic and attainable goals. I broke them down into smaller pieces and take actions everyday. After taking a lot of small steps, I am surprised how far I’ve come!
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
My favorite features on Etsy are the Storque and Forums. When I find time, I read interesting and helpful articles in the Storque. I also like forums where I learn a lot from other sellers and also have chances to help them out. New feature I would like to see is an automatic tax calculation in the invoice for same-state buyers. This would be awesome, because sellers do not have to request taxes for individual buyers.
How do you promote your work?
* I relist and renew everyday
* I maximize tags, titles and descriptions on all the items so people can find me through search features.
* I upload items in Google Base, so customers can find me through search engines outside of Etsy. Since I’ve started this, many of my customers came from outside of Etsy.
* I have a blog where I post giveaways and new items.
* I use Flickr.
* I use Twitter when I find few minutes to spare for promotion.
In ten years I’d like to be…
A wonderful wife to my husband. A loving Mother of children. A successful woman as an artist and a businesswoman. A helpful individual in my community.
