Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello, I am Gustav Reyes. I live in Chicago Ill. I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where I studied painting and drawing and learned that Art is for everyone no matter what your role in life. I also learned of the many freedoms which Art holds and the gifts it gives, which I enjoy to this day.
What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it?
My earliest memories of making something by hand was making tissue paper art in Kindergarten. I also remember that I could not wait to get home to add to or finish the cardboard box robots that I made with my little brother. They were life size and wrapped with all the aluminum foil we could find. Honestly, things of wonder to two little boys.
What inspires you? Where do your ideas come from?
Nature, Poetry, Books, Truth, Love and the sheer spender of life. I have one muse that inspires me beyond my dreams, my wife. I also derive inspiration from the many wonderful people who I have gotten to know through my work.
What are your favorite materials?
Of course wood but I have spent many hours with a paint brush in hand toiling with the complexity’s of color. For a new ring I will be making soon, I have acquired a small piece of tulip wood that when cut unleashed the most wonderful scent. I also like copper, glass, salvaged lumber and Eco-Friendly woods such as Bamboo.
Any tips for selling handmade stuff?
I am very new to selling my things and have learned so much just from reading all the comments and advice from all the sellers here on Etsy. There are many sellers that I respect immensely and will continue to follow. If I have learned one thing it is that when you sell handmade stuff you’re selling the hand that made the stuff. What I mean is that the customer is buying something they like from someone they like.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Whatever my wife tells me to do. When I am not doing what my wife wants I read books and try to make money through my woodworking. My life now is about following my Personal Legend (from the book “The Alchemist”).
How can Etsy be improved? Any feature requests?
I love the clean and simple layout, it is amazing. The four Etsy whiz kids have done a great job of including both the buyers and the sellers in the development of this community and that alone will improve Etsy alot. In the back end of our shops it maybe helpful to be able to track sales, shipping etc. within one page.
What is your favorite color?
For fifteen years my wife has asked me what my favorite color was and for fifteen years I have said I like them all but if I had to choose it would be green. The green of leaves that whisper life is good when the wind blows through them. Color is something I respect and enjoy as I would a good meal or a the scent of a rose. My wife says I am a girl so for fifteen years I have said that I like them all.
