Ceylan works as a full-time engineer while also running two Etsy shops in her spare time: paperinstyle and packageinstyle. She currently resides in Rhode Island with her husband Cenk and their dog, Bonita. Ceylan recently started her blog, paper in style, and has been hosting an interview series each month. While browsing Etsy for inspiration, she realized that several of her favorite shops talked about their pets in their profiles. As a dog owner participating in fund raising and volunteerism for animals, she could understand how important their pets were to them. Ceylan was happy to share the pet love with Etsy’s Blog. Here’s her interview with Etsy seller amberalexander, whose whimsical animal paintings are accompanied by fantastical descriptions.
What is your name and your shop name?
My name is Amber Alexander and my shop is amberalexander.
What are your dogs’ names?
Olin and Isabelle (Izzy for short).
What is the story behind your dog’s names?
Olin was named after my late grandmother’s brother, and it was perfect for this little old soul. Isabelle is my mother’s middle name.
How long have you had Olin and Izzy?
These pups have been with me for 2.5 years.
What activities do they enjoy?
Driving me insane, playing with their toys, wrestling, running, eating, sleeping, bugging the groundhogs and exploring the forest.
What are their favorite treats?
What do they do when you are creating?
Sleep…or bark at people running by.
What is the best part of having pets?
Constant humor! A day doesn’t go by that I don’t crack up watching their antics. They are also huge cuddlers and remind me to lighten up.
What story would you like to share about your pets?
Olin and Izzy like to take showers. We get a lot of snow here in the winter, and as they are poodles, the snow sticks to them and creates snowballs. The only way to get rid of these is a warm shower. When they come in from playing outside in the winter they head right for the shower as if to say, “I could really use a warm shower right about now!”
Is your work inspired by your pets?
My work is inspired by my pets in many ways. First and foremost, their attitudes — cocky, sheepish, entitled, innocent, eager, sneaky — all go into my paintings. I envision many of their emotions and attitudes in other animals in my work. For instance, I can capture Izzy’s innocent “Who, me?” look and put it into a bird or a rabbit painting. Queen Isabelle was inspired by Izzy’s persona. Izzy doesn’t wear bows in her fur or carry a fan but she does lounge on the furniture and thinks she’s queen!
