Editors’ Picks: Vintage Christmas

Nov 15, 2013

by Aleksa Brown

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

There’s something special about holiday items with a history — the shimmering glass bulbs filigreed with lines of tarnished glitter, tangled strands of lights that gave generations of trees their seasonal glow, cherished cardboard villages that had pride of place each December, nestled in piles of glittery cotton snow. You can’t help but wonder who owned them and what hidden stories they hold.

Vintage items are ripe for new traditions. We’ve collected some of our favorite vintage Christmas-themed treasure on Etsy. Perhaps there’s a piece that’s just right for you?

I am not always the biggest fan of the "vintage" trend but when it comes to the holidays I don't think anything is quite as fitting as well loved treasures from the past. Tradition, family, celebrations, the days gone by are what we build all of those wonderful holiday memories on. When I get out the old ornaments or my grandmother's antique nativity or those gift worn stockings, I think "vintage" is just about right.

I love pretty much anything vintage but I am always extra impressed with vintage Christmas decorations. I think it's probably because I come from a family of butter fingers so lots of beautiful ornaments got shattered and nicked over the years. See the beauty of these ornaments that have survived and been loved for years is wonderful!

I get such a thrill out of discovering vintage Christmas treasures to share with my customers. It gets a bit harder to find the true gems with each passing year which just makes them all the more special! It's always fun to hang ornaments that have survived 50 or 60 years and wonder about the other homes and trees they've been a part of during the holidays.

My favorite vintage Christmas item are the tall lights that bubbled when they were plugged in. They remake them now, but my family still has the originals from the early '80s. And, they still work just fine!

You've done a lovely job of sorting through a whole lot of shops for great vintage Christmas picks. After all that searching, do you think it's possible the Etsy market for things from Christmases past has been saturated? I have three tubs of vintage holiday treasures waiting to be listed in my shop, but I'm wondering if I'm too late to the game. What do you (or others) think?

Love these! I think of decorating the house during the holidays as a time for reminiscing. Ornaments are little reminders of the past -- where they come from or who gave them to us, and who they make us remember. Think of the stories these wonderful little objects have inspired and have yet to inspire.

I'm keeping a few Christmas vintage finds, I can't help it! Brings back nostalgic feelings we never want to let go. Christmas was our most home decorated holiday, my mom really did a wonderful job at that. Beautiful finds!

The favourite ornament in our house was a little green Christmas elf: lone survivor of the 1940's set of elves passed down by my Grandmother. My sister and I used to keep him in a special box in the garage with "provisions" to last him until Christmas. The unwrapping of "Elfie" was always quite ceremonious. We'd reserve him the choicest real estate on the tree and ensure that he had a christmas light to read by. He's a bit battered looking after sixty-five plus years, but he still makes his appearance every Christmas! It wouldn't be the holidays without him.

I love vintage Christmas! My grandmother had a huge collection of gold and silver lamme kneehugger elves that were displayed all over our tree. At the time I didn't care for their clownlike faces, but now I want one for my own Christmas tree because it would remind me of her. :)

I grew up admiring all the christmas decorations my mom had from the 50s and 60s whens he was little. They bring back great memories of my childhood, and that's part of the reason why I now do all my Christmas decorating post-war/vintage style. Bottle brush trees, putz houses, flocked glass ornaments, mercury glass bead garland, I love it all. There's just a charm to these items from the past that can't be matched.

Oh I love it. Looking at all of the vintage christmas decoration makes me think about when I was a little girl. We had the silver aluminun Christmas tree and a light that plugged up and would rotate where you could see all of the colors from the light on our tree. Those were the best of times and when children are little and still believe in Santa Claus. Thanks ETSY for this!!!

I love the selections! My favorite decorations and ornaments growing up were always the older ones: ornaments from my parents' childhoods and those belonging to my grandparents, great-grandparents, and possibly even a bit further back than that! It was a way to feel connected to the earlier generations. It still breaks my heart that one of my father's two favorite ornaments, a little tiny rabbit, went missing a few years ago. I continue to hope that it will mysteriously resurface in the box of ornaments.

Opening a box of old Christmas decorations is opening a box beautiful memories. I find that almost all the vintage and antique decorations I come across are packed away so carefully to preserve these reminders of Christmas past. I was especially thrilled when I found a cache of decorations dating from the 1930's that the lights featured in this article were from- like a kid in a candy store!

These items bring back so many memories. Christmas is so magical, I remember my father took such care in arranging the big multi-colored lights, that was before the mini lights. He always bought angel hair and carefully spread it very thin over the tree, it made every light spread in the white web.

I love the idea that these have seen may holidays with, now four, generations of family. I also love the idea that traditions are carrying on. And an extra little gift is they are reused which is eco friendly.

I have a bunch of my mothers and my grandmothers ornaments, and seeing I am 73, they are at least 100 and up. I put them on the tree every year:>)

There is something so special about an ornament that has a history. You can sit and wonder how many holiday celebrations it has been thru, how many families it has touched and how many more it will. I just love sitting around, hot cocoa in one hand, daydreaming about the previous life of vintage decorations. Lovely selections. Thanks for sharing :)

There is no better time for nostalgia than Christmas. Vintage ornaments and decor bring back age-softened memories of family gatherings and gifts. I love sending out vintage items that I can no longer use, knowing that they will evoke entirely new memories from someone else's Christmas past.

..although I like everything new, but that's such a pleasure for me to see a fairy tree at my parents' place that is decorated with the toys that are at least as old as I'm. It reminds me of those beautiful Christmas Eves as a child, singing the Christmas songs and enjoying snow outside :))) thank you for the great memories :))

Great vintage Christmas treasures are my favorite. It's hard to find the true gems, which just makes them all the more special! It's always fun to hang the ornaments on the tree that have survived 60 or 90 years and wonder about the other homes they've been a part of during the holidays. Happy Holiday pre-season!!

There is a serious side to Christmas, that has nothing to do with material things. There is a social side to Christmas -- reconnecting with family and friends. And there is the other facet of Christmas that "Vintage" expresses so well. It starts with colorful and glitzy and goes on to kitsch-y and gaudy! It's all good!
