Come Dye With the Textile Arts Center at Etsy Labs

Nov 11, 2010

by Julie Schneider

My favorite holiday is getting closer and closer. As I cross off the days on my calendar with neat X’s, I get increasingly excited for the heaping mountains of mashed potatoes and the remarkable pie-to-person ration that my family strives for each year. Yes, Thanksgiving time is lurking!

Please join us at the Etsy Labs on Monday, November 15 for a Craft Night led by Isa Rodrigues and Owyn Ruck from the Textile Arts Center for a workshop on dyeing napkins autumn colors, just in time to adorn your dinner table for a fall meal shared with family and friends.

In this workshop, we’ll will learn how to dye fabric using fiber reactive dyes. These dyes not only are super easy and safe to use, but are one of the most eco-friendly amongst synthetic dyes. Participants will be able to experiment with a different range of colors and also with some tie-dye and shibori techniques.

Note: We’ll provide enough materials for everyone to make two napkins, but if you would like to make more, please bring along extra cotton fabric or napkins.

The beautiful Textile Arts Center (pictured below) is located in Gowanus, Brooklyn, and its main goal is to provide support to fiber artists, and everyday people interested in working with fiber, by acting as a resource facility and creative meeting place. They offer classes, workshops and special events for both adults and children on fiber arts topics including weaving, screenprinting, dyeing, embroidery, sewing, and more. Our space also acts as a gallery for fiber artists and backdrop for lectures, demos, and screenings. The Textile Arts Center has also recently started an affordable private studio rental program for textile artists and designers.

Wow, I wish I could come to this if only to be in that fabulous loom room! I think fibre reactive dyes are a great way to express yourself in fabric. Any color you want, anytime! I've been working away on a new batch of dyed fabric to use in my creations and it is fun fun fun :) Have fun!

A binge of fiber-reactive dyeing in my early 20's was vividly brought back in reading this. I KNOW I have a bunch of dye in my closet, and maybe tonight I'll find it. Thank you for reviving memories and spurring me into action (I HOPE).

AWESOME looms group setup! (ahem) I just found a loom just like those ones on the road, and no idea how to use it. It's sitting in the living room. I wish we had a place like this in San Francisco for me to go learn how to use it.

using a loom is similar to being in a relationship--it requires commitment. and i can't even commit to dinner and cocktails.
