Looking for a one-of-a-kind holiday gift that’s guaranteed to delight? In our 30 Days of Gift Ideas series, we’re sharing one high-quality handmade gift each day for 30 days. Check out the full collection, as it builds, on our 30 Days of Gift Ideas page, and get ready to be inspired. This week’s theme: Stocking stuffers
A vibrant green army of caterpillars. A brilliant blue ostentation of peacocks. A yellow tower of giraffes as bright as the savanna sun. You certainly don’t need to be a self-professed word nerd to appreciate the weird and wonderful terminology splashed across these playful pencils from UK-based shop Newton and the Apple, each one describing the collective gathering of a particular animal.
Each standout scribbler is color-coordinated with its corresponding critter, whose name is hand-pressed onto the side in gold-foil lettering. Watch any animal lover or collector of unusual facts pull this whimsical set from their stocking and we guarantee they’ll be tickled pink as a stand of flamingos. Animal noun pencils from Newton and the Apple, $10

Yeah, collective animal nouns are super cool. My "spiral" of animal group nouns t-shirt design was one of the first things I launched on Etsy back in 2008. I actually checked with someone making "smack of jellyfish" greeting cards before even putting it up on the site, to make sure they were okay with me appreciating them as well, even though I was making shirts, and she was making something completely different. She was! One of my favorite collective nouns is a "drift of pigs", but it often changes. I mean, a "troubling of goldfish", and a "cackle of hyena" are also damn cool. It's easy to form an obsession with them when you start reading them all!
