In the depths of Abkhazia, a father and son blacksmithing duo is maintaining the age-old tradition of hammering, firing and manipulating red hot iron on a trusty anvil. The English Russia blog recently documented a day in the lives of 77-year-old Vladimir Khutaba and his son, Daur, in their workshop. Vladimir is experienced in his trade, to say the least; he’s been working as a blacksmith since 1954. The agenda for today? Creating an heirloom that will remain in the family for many years and be considered sacred: a chain that will be used to hang a kettle over a hearth. Be sure to check out a video of Vladimir at work.
