The Midair Muralists Who Paint New York

Do you follow Tumblr’s Storyboard? It’s a collection of thoughtful features that tell the stories of a broad array of creative folks. This week, we were tickled to see that they showcased the artists at Colossal Media. Colossal specializes in large scale, hand-painted photorealistic murals, preserving a traditional form of advertising art all but lost in the age of vinyl. The incredible sign they painted for the Etsy Holiday Shop in SoHo is on view in this riveting short video, produced by Sky Dylan-Robins.

I've always been attracted to the scale and grandeur of large-scale urban murals, and now I'm in complete awe of them. I've never been able to wrap my mind around the creation of them, and seeing the meditative creative state those artists are able to maintain twelve stories above a bustling NY street in sub-freezing weather, is a complete revelation. I bow down to your achievement of awesome, mural painters!

Sometimes features on Etsy leave me speechless. I have seen into whole worlds and ways of life I would never have been able to know about otherwise. I have so much respect and appreciation for these guys. It's not just their skill, it's how much they want to do it. I can't tell you how much I respect that. Great sign, too! And the perfect video.

I've always adored murals but I had no idea pouncing was part of the process (perforated pattern paper plus white or black dust in a cloth) It's a truly ancient artform, with many of the same techniques used today as were used in the Middle Ages.
