Top 10 Tips for Starting an Etsy Business

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

amycuevasschroeder

With so much great advice buzzing around the Etsy community, it’s a bit of a challenge to narrow it down to the top 10. How’d I do it? I asked some of Etsy’s most active sellers and Admin to nominate their favorite words of wisdom.

1. Be Patient

Hands-down, the most popular piece of advice for new Etsy sellers is realizing that success doesn’t happen overnight.

Jodi Lynn Burton of Jodi Lynn’s Emporium of Doodles didn’t get her first order until four months after she started her shop in 2011. “I listed a couple of original drawings, and a couple people favorited them, but I wasn’t getting much traffic,” she says. “After reading advice in The Seller Handbook, I added a couple new items and tags, and then I got my first sale.”

Moral of the story: Keep making improvements to your shop and view your Shop Stats to study what works for attracting traffic. “Iterate and improve. Practice and repeat,” says Etsy Admin Cheyne Little.

Read Etsy Success: Shop Stats Insights.

2. Create High-Quality Photography

The age-old expression “first impressions are everything” holds true on Etsy. Because Etsy is an image-driven site, shoppers make quick visual decisions based on needs, personal taste, and the quality of your shop’s images.

Luckily, you don’t necessarily need an expensive camera to capture beautiful product images. “I used a point-and-shoot camera on a tripod that captured natural lighting for my first three years of selling on Etsy and had great success,” says Jenny Nemlekar of jennyndesign. “I’m also an avid Etsy shopper, and I enjoy perusing shops with clean, clear, clutter-free product photography because it allows for a ‘shoppable’ environment without distractions.”

Read more tips about producing great product photography.

3. Price It Right

There’s definitely an art to pricing your items, and it’s a process that you’ll likely alter over time. Paying yourself first — and fairly — should be top priority. “You deserve a living wage,” says Etsy Admin Morgan Evans. “Calculate your costs accurately and don’t undercharge for your items or the time you spend on them.”

Here’s a tried-and-tested pricing formula that a number of Etsy sellers use: Materials + Labor + Expenses + Profit = Wholesale x 2 = Retail. Read more about this formula in “A Simple Formula for Pricing Your Work”.

Read more advice about pricing in The Seller Handbook.

4. Provide Excellent Customer Service

What exactly is good customer service? Some of the key elements include answering Convos in a timely fashion and providing clear information in your Shop Policies and Message to Buyers. Be direct about shipping turnaround time, whether you offer refunds or exchanges, how you handle customs and duty fees, and the types of payments you accept.

The ultimate payoff of providing good customer service is repeat customers and word-of-mouth referrals. “The busier we get, the harder good customer service becomes, but remember that without customers, we wouldn’t have a business — we’d just have a hobby,” says Heather Kent. “Make every customer feel like they’re your favorite one.”

Read Your Customer Service Guide.

5. Organize Your Finances

Even if your business is a small, one-person operation, Morgan Evans says it’s important to set up good bookkeeping and organization systems from the get-go and keep straightforward sales and expenses records. “You’ll establish an organized, logical foundation to build upon when it’s time to do taxes, hire an accountant, or take your business to the next level.”

Read Getting Started With Income and Expense Tracking. Read tips about finances and taxes.

6. Think Like a Customer

One of the best ways to cater to your customers and help customers find you is to think like them as you’re developing your shop’s brand. As you’re creating products, marketing materials, and listing your items, put yourself in the “mental shoes” of your hopeful buyer. What keywords will they use to search for your products? How will they use your items? Include this information in your 13 tags, item titles, and descriptions.

Get more tips about search here.

7. Join a Team

If you’re optimistic about your future on Etsy but are feeling a bit overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Heather Kent felt exactly the same way. “Once I joined a team, I felt such a sense of community, and I learned so much from my teammates,” she says. “My photos improved, my shop started looking more professional, and sales increased.”

Whether you’re seeking help from sellers making similar items or want to meet people who live near you, there are thousands of teams to choose from. Join a team.

8. Do Your Research

You’ll be surprised how much you can learn about growing your Etsy shop just by asking yourself questions and then diving into searching for the answer. For example, to learn about your (friendly) competition and how to cater to your ideal customers, starting searching on Etsy and the Internet.

“There’s no shortage of resources on Etsy, the web, in books, and by communicating with other sellers,” says Sara Gilmore of I Felt Fuzzy. On forums, other sellers will be more likely to help you if it appears you’ve done your homework and have specific questions.”

9. Network and Promote Yourself

Let’s say you’ve researched your target market, rocked your item listings, and now you’re ready for action. Now what? It’s time to spread the word about your brand-new business. But how? One of the least expensive promotion tools is good-old fashioned networking.

“I learned that you can’t just list a couple items and expect sales — unless you’re really lucky!” says JodiLynn. The captain of Metro Detroit Etsy Team suggests making treasuries, following community members, commenting on blog posts, and keeping up with your activity feed.

As for promoting your shop outside of Etsyland, Sara Gilmore recommends blogging and social media for building your web presence. Read more tips about social media.

10. Take Advantage of Etsy’s Free Resources

You don’t need an MBA to become a top seller. Etsy is an equal-opportunity marketplace, and everyone is poised for success.

Etsy Admin and leaders in the community aim to be as transparent as possible about how seller tools work, and there’s so much information just waiting to be devoured. For example, you can read about how full-time Etsy sellers have grown their shops in Quit Your Day Job features, biweekly tips in the Etsy Success Newsletter, FAQs, and The Seller Handbook.

Those are just 10 tips for new sellers. What are your top tips for starting an Etsy business? Share your advice in the comments.

Great advice! So honored to be included among these successful Etsy sellers and admin. I definitely learned some things I need to improve! I just wanted to mention that the formula may appear slightly confusing to some because it also implies that (Material+Expenses+Labor+Profit)/2 = Wholesale, which could make for bad business decisions! :) It may clearer to show it as (M+E+L+P)=Wholesale=Retail/2. So that's the extent of using my engineering degree. :) :)

Nice article - thank you. We started listing in November and we're really enjoying the ride. Some tips from us: 1) Mid-gray, vs white, background improved our photos immensely. 2) Pinterest is a great resource. We pin stuff that we love and often during our research on our vintage wears. 3) Vintage sellers - research, and keep researching - it gets easier as you go along. You learn how to describe things to get hits on them online. We've found many things online that we haven't posted yet - while doing research for other items. It increases your knowledge of what is special and what isn't and what to look for when you go out to shop. 4) Shipping continues to trip us up - keep using any online tools you have to estimate as closely as you can - or you can lose lots of money needlessly. 5) Communicate with your customers, thank everyone who features you, and stay positive. :) -Maggie & Tony

Thank you for the amazing tips. And Gosh, reading the comments I have gotten even more advices to try out. I opened shop in 2011, but it was only September of last year when I started making some real effort. I'm always working on my photography. I learned about teams a few months ago, and now I understand the significance of treasuries. I am having some problem with the pricing and using the right tags, but I think I will get it together soon. The patient thing, I am working on that too. One thing that keeps impressing me is the community on Etsy. It's so amazing how eager people are to help you. I am where I am now because of some of the amazing people I have met in teams, who were just so happy to share with me things they have tried that worked. This warmth keeps me going. It feels good to know that I have friends here.

Sometimes I have to work around the clock to meet a customer's shipping needs. These gestures could translate into future sales and positive feedback. 4-Have your own style. I didn't understand when other people's advice was "be yourself". I get it now. Start making what you want to make without trying to copy others' style or aesthetics. You will notice a pattern in your choices. Go with it!

So helpful to focus on the important areas, thank you! Setting little targets each day has helped me as well. Some days I just want to work on new designs and feel my head is bursting with ideas, but it does take self- discipline to get those less fun things done, too, such as paperwork and finances. And there's nothing more satisfying than ticking off the last item on your list at the end of the day with a cold G&T with extra lemon in your hands... :-)

    Heather Jordan from HeatherJordanJewelry says:

In addition to the tips above, I would also add: 1) Price appropriately for the global marketplace (remember who Etsy's core customer demographic consists of), and 2) Minimize competition by sticking to products few (if any) other artists make. Being different goes a REALLY long way! Both involve keeping tabs on other Etsy shops and analyzing their sales data which may not be everyone's cup of tea but it's helped me a lot. Shops stats offer a wealth of information about where you should be investing your time and why customers choose to buy one item over another. Milk those stats for all they're worth!

Probably the best advice I have gotten is to keep adding new items! I also rearrange my shop on a regular basis by rotating my listings by color or theme, etc. - keeps it fresh for me and hopefully for my prospective buyers too. Also change the items I'm highlighting. Use all the tags, too. Since I've started trying these ideas I believe I have seen an increase in my sales.

Something really simple but incredibly worthwhile is putting your shop URL in the signature of all your emails and on any discussion groups you're active in - a sports chat, music, new mums, anything. Get other members to click on your signature. Maybe your friends.family will put your URL in their sigs too. Ask your Facebook friends to post about your store on their walls. Get those links out there!

What has worked for me is to keep experimenting with products until you find a hit (or hits), always keep working to improve your photography and join some teams. The teams will help you market your products, give you advice, cheer you up during slumps and congratulate you when things go well. Since most Etsy shops are one-person operations often run from home, your team-mates can become your virtual co-workers and friends.

Great advice and tips. patience is important in everything. We opened because I felt it was something that God encouraged me to do. Our shop is a family business. We had a very good year so far. Yes He has provided for us through sales but we've gained so much more than just money, a lot of entrepreneurial experience for all of us including our two homeschooled teens. We've been blessed to meet wonderful customers especially through custom orders. One thing that has really helped us get our name out is to have reviews and giveaways with bloggers. We not only have bloggers approach us but we also approach people we believe would benefit as well as us. Customer service is extremely important as well. I appreciate the extra touches when I make purchases too. Good photos are important also, we own an older point and shoot and have been able to work with it so far. Find your own niche, that is also key.

Great article. My first sale was afetr 14 days, that was awesome. I would like to add the 11th tip: love, love , love what you do. If you put a passion into your work, I am sure that this will bring more success. But be passioned also when describing your item, when taking photos, when communicating with customers and so on. When someone truly loves what he/she does, than this also reflects also in his/her visual image of his/her etsy shop. Well, that is my opinion.

For me customer service is #1 priority! I've noticed customer service seems to be completely gone from the brick and morter businesses. What's worse is how well it's tolerated!! So, I go as far as I possibly can,to make my customers satisfied with my service as well as my product. It's about wanting people to know my integrity as a person, so they can trust me as a business. I treat every customer I have with this attitude.

    Diana from OrganicGiftsByDiana says:

Yes, the pricing formula is a good one - BUT when calculating the your cost for your materials used, you need to use a replacement value, not the clearance sale... value. Because if you use the discounted cost of your materials and the finished items from those materials get popular - you can't keep selling them at the lower price or you will lose money. If you raise your costs too soon (because now you found out your mistake) your customers will not be happy. This is one of the biggest mistakes I see at craft shows and online - selling things too cheap :(

Hi to all Thank you for your tips and thank you for making me think. My high school was for economy, and I was hating it. I was so relieved when I finished and got excepted in art academy class of sculpture(I was enjoying that period of creativity in my life)the creativity remains in sculptures and in paintings but how do I sell them ???it is a struggle yes but I never took the time to question myself what do I need besides a good art. And then I discover Etsy, as a place to learn about presenting my work. # 1 thing for me was how to have nice and polite communication (and think on English )#2 that I am learning CEO..( which is difficult to pronounce still :D and to understand )#3 marketing, marketing, marketing-I found it very interesting and fun at the moment and the last for this moment for me is PATIENT and this the last one is pretty hard. Thank you again for great tips and the encouragement that you are giving us.

Great article! Honored to be quoted - thanks! This was touched on, but another piece of advice I have, that might seem really obvious, but is extremely important: Make sure you are passionate about your product, and that you do it to the best of your ability. If you want to have a successful Etsy business, it's crucial to love what you create, and create what you love. If you decide to sell ______ simply because you can't think of anything else, chances are you will burn out in a few months. Think of a unique item that you are passionate about, and pour lots of love and care into each creation. Your customers can tell.

Besides all the useful tips (keep listing etc) what I've learned so far is that I don't need to stress what the others must say about my items or what they must expect from me etc.. just try to be myself, express myself in my own unique way without all the typical boring marketing cliches, have fun, go for my dreams and that's what it matters, then I will know that I've done the best that I can do while I stay true to myself! ;o) Good luck everyone!!! xx

As a small tip that I have noticed from reviewing my shop stats, posting new items over a period of time (post one, wait an hour then post another) as opposed to posting multiple items at one time has helped me gain greater exposure for all my items. This way my newest item is further up the listings gaining my shop more exposure. I hope this helps!

I find that when purchasing, there are sellers that thoughtlessly throw an item in a box or envelope without any plastic protection for protection in case the box and/or envelope gets wet. I take great pains to not only wrap an item in a beautiful way - who doesn't like opening pretty packages! - but also to protect what is inside. Another tip would be to enclose something with either your shop name or address along with the customer's address in case the item inside becomes separated from or the outer packaging becomes damaged.

Do lots of treasuries! Paying it forward really does work and I love when someone sells something off my treasuries! Also, it's so true about joining a team. It's great to have cheerleaders to encourage you along and you in turn can do it for your teammates! Lastly, if you don't have a lot of people in your circle yet. Go ahead and add the people who have responded on this page. Joining circles and favoriting other people's stores helps immensely! Every morning I go through my activity feed and favorite items and treasuries that come up on it.

I love Etsy because it provides the tools for improvement/success. I opened my little shop September 2012 and still have alot to learn. The buyers are savy and they even make recommendations on how your items can be used. Sometimes they see your item as something totally different than what you intended them to be. The customers, they are pretty cool.

My computer was hijacked almost immediately. I have been putting off opening a store until I can get things such as a banner set up. Looks like I may be doing it without a banner.

Very helpful article. One tip I can share is to be proactive. When your item is featured in a treasury, don't just post comment. Promote the treasury by: Mark the treasury as favorite Click on all the items featured in the treasury. Share it on Facebook,Twitter,Pinterest,Google+ Visit shop of the seller that curated the treasury. Mark their shop and some items in their shops as favorites. Promoting other shops/items is also promoting your shop/items. It's a win, win.

I disagree. I think there are shops for which Etsy just doesn't work, and mine is unfortunately one of them. I did apply, even before reading the top 10 tips, almost all of them. Result - I keep on not existing. I think the reason is that I just don't have the time (I have a full time job which has nothing to do with my Etsy shop or my hobby) to network. I think people who can do that are more successful, and that is logical. As customer I love Etsy, as seller it just doesn't work for me.

I have been on Etsy for 7 months now and I find that adding new items weekly helps keep my shop more visible. Also the more items you have the more you will show up in searches, basic math. I need to work on lighting in my photography it doesn't help that I live in the Pacific North West and natural light is hard to get here. My initial investment was $700 dollars. I am selling vintage clothing. For the first year my goal is to re-invest every dollar I make into more inventory so that I can build up a big inventory and therefor reach more buyers. After my first year I will focus on managing my costs and trying to make a profit. Has anyone else tried this method and if so how did it work out for them?

    Janice Bailor from laruedefleurs says:

The best advice I have gotten is from a family friend who also runs a successful Etsy shop, Adam of BiltSharp. He told me that if you want this to be a job, you have to work it like a job- i.e. do it every day. So even though I am somewhat small and limited by my time commitments (family first), I do something with my shop every day. I make a commitment to my future as a "full-timer" by working in my studio everyday- even if it just making more labels- and reading articles on how to improve and tweaking my online shop. I have seen more traffic and more sales. My next goal is attracting more repeat customers!

Thank you for posting such excellent advice. I've been active for over a month, still yet to make a sale, I am hoping that I have got at least some of my shop front to appeal!
