Short Stories: Geode Sea Urchin

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Here at Etsy, we believe that the story behind an object is often just as fascinating as the object itself. Short Stories is our series dedicated to telling the tales behind extraordinary pieces found or created by Etsy sellers.

Together, Heather and Manuel are the team behind Little World Design. Here’s Heather with the tale of how this striking geode urchin came to be.

It’s interesting to see how our pieces evolve. Recently, I visited the tide pools with my son in La Jolla, California. The inspiration for this piece came from this experience. Manuel became inspired by the images I shared with him, and designed this piece.

While planning for this piece, I met with my jewel vendor, which I love doing because it’s like a treasure hunt. I sift through racks of stones and minerals from all over the world; I think of all the layers of lives and histories attached to each one of them. This geode is meant to reflect these connections between us and nature and other people. Normally, I open at least 50 geodes until I find the perfect ones. I often look for geodes that have an interesting shape along with crystals that have a tint of pink color.

As with most of our pieces, this one attempts to reimagine something from the outside world and to recreate its beauty. All the elements in the piece are natural with an ethereal vibe to them. In the end, we wanted the piece to feel vulnerable and raw. Nature is magical and can evoke a lot of emotions; it makes me feel connected.
