Hello! I’m Jess Decelle, the hands and heart behind Fox & Brie. I create limited-edition bow ties, neckties, and pocket squares from vintage and deadstock fabrics that I’ve collected from all over the world. I live in Austin, Texas, with my husband Morgan and our two rescue dogs, Rila and Basil.
As a child, when asked by well-meaning adults what I wanted to be when I grew up, I answered politely, “I just want to make neat things and go on lots of adventures.” It’s taken 27 years and two college degrees to realize that I just need to create useful, beautiful things for people to enjoy.
I learned how to sew from my grandmother at a young age, and my grandfather taught me self-reliance and the importance of being a gentleman. I learned from them the value of hard work and the pride that comes from a job well done.
When I am putting together a collection, I try to offer a variety of different patterns that work well together but are still interesting enough to stand out individually. I’m always on the hunt for unique prints and eye-catching color combinations that lend a modern twist to the idea of the Southern gentleman. From the first cut to the final stitch, each bow tie, necktie, and pocket square is made with my own two hands, allowing me complete control over quality and construction.
I was raised in the “waste not, want not” spirit of earlier generations, so I learned the importance of repairing and re-purposing everyday objects into something useful. My love for vintage fabrics plays on the “secret society” feeling you get when you know you’ve found something special. Each fabric is only available in a limited quantity, so I know I’m creating a product that’s truly unique and my customers know they’re buying something that they can’t find anywhere else.
When I first opened my shop, Etsy seemed like a simple and effective choice. I never expected that it would become such an asset, both in promoting my brand and connecting me with other makers. I’ve met so many talented people and am constantly inspired and amazed by their creativity.
Owning a creative business is the most rewarding and frustrating life I could ask for, and I love every second of it! Even when it isn’t fun – when I haven’t gotten enough sleep or I begin to second-guess a decision – those are the times that keep me going. Though sometimes I forget, every day I’m making a little bit of progress, growing stronger and more confident in my abilities and myself. When it comes down to it, I get to wake up every morning and make things that I love. I can’t imagine doing anything else.
