I love the holidays, but I welcome the opportunity to refresh, take stock and begin with a clean slate in the new year. It feels like a worthwhile ritual, to look back on the past twelve months, give a little thanks for the good things in our lives, and kindly bid adieu to the stuff that wasn’t working out so well. Regardless of whether or not we stick to our resolutions, it can’t hurt to burst out of the gates with the best of intentions.
And with that clean slate, I really look forward to lots of yummy, simple, wholesome foods that feel nourishing after a month of excess. Cue the smoothie. Smoothies can be deceptive, I think, because all that fruit sugar isn’t necessarily healthy in large doses. So I offer two recipes here — a rich banana date smoothie that would be great for a little energy burst before or after exercising, and a straightforward green smoothie with apple, kale and ginger that makes a surprisingly tasty, bright and zippy drink first thing in the morning.
Banana Date Smoothie
1 ripe banana
1 date, pit removed
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
Generous sprinkle of cinnamon
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Pour into a tall glass, and finish with a dusting of cinnamon.
Apple Kale Ginger Smoothie
1 firm, sweet apple, cored and diced
2 stalks lacinato kale, ribs removed, chopped
1 teaspoon minced, fresh ginger (if you like heat, add a second teaspoon of ginger)
Juice of one orange
Juice of one lemon
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Pour into a juice glass and serve immediately.
