For over 20 years, self-taught artist Colin Richmond has handcrafted miniature sheep, llamas, alpacas, donkeys, pigs, goats, chicks, dogs, and nativity crèches from his Asheville, North Carolina studio. Using his own unique porcelain blend, castable stone, hand-carved molds and imported woven fur, Colin assembles each animal by hand, adding expression with paint on head, hands, and hooves.
Today, he creates over 60 breeds of sheep, traveling the globe to study different heritage varieties. “I go into the fields to spend time with breeds of sheep, mainly so I can accurately translate their unique characteristics and personalities in my work,” says Colin. “I love to travel and my work is deeply inspired by the landscape, the animals, and the people I meet.”
