A French Rendez-Vous

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Bonjour, I’m Laetitia and I work for the French Etsy community. To celebrate the Etsy in French launch, we are very pleased to announce that the artwork for February’s Twitter Artist Series was created by the French designer, Mathilde Aubier. She has found your perfect valentine. Look into her eyes, let yourself be captivated by her red lips, the elegant way she takes off her gloves. She must be the one! So why don’t you go ahead and add her to your phone?

Who are you? What is your background?
My name is Mathilde and I am 27 years old. I am an independent illustrator and graphic designer. I studied applied arts and multimedia in Paris and worked in several advertising agencies. I worked on personal projects on the side and finally realized that I could turn these projects into a full-time job.

How would you describe your creative process? Where does your inspiration come from?
I work primarily in collage and I like to use materials or scanned photos that I mix around on my computer. The mixture of vector graphics with photos and textures creates new, hybrid images that really please me.

My work is above all spontaneous, without forethought, instinctive. I am very inspired by Scandinavian design and the work of artists in northern countries such as Camilla Engman’s illustrations and Marimekko’s designs. I also really enjoy the 1950s aesthetic (Lucienne Day’s patterns, for example.)

What does your typical day look like?
My schedule varies on a constant basis, I don’t really have a typical day. On one day I will work from dawn to dusk and the next day maybe an hour or two depending on how many orders I’ve received and my desire to create. There are moments when I really savor the “non-routine,” but on the other hand lull periods can get a little tiring because I can’t really plan anything ahead of time.

Do you have any great spots in France that you would recommend to our readers who want to visit?
I would recommend grabbing lunch or a drink at the bar/restaurant Nambodaï in Paris. I worked on the decoration in collaboration with my friend Christine Delaquaise, with whom I created the studio ( Ma + Chr ). We create websites, interior decoration and textile designs together.

What are your future projects?
For a little while now I’ve been wanting to create a children’s book, and I am going to take advantage of this interview to shout out to any writers out there: I am looking for a story to illustrate!
