The Quick-Start Guide to Selling on Etsy

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

daniellexo

Welcome to selling on Etsy! When you’re getting started, it feels like there are so many things to do for your new shop. It can be overwhelming just trying to figure out where to begin. Consider this article your handy quick-start guide. Here, we’ll walk you through the most important things to consider for launching a successful shop, as well as the top resources you’ll need!

The Three P’s: Products, Photography and Pricing

Let’s start with products. What items will line the walls of your virtual boutique? Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What are you ready to share with the world?
  • Who would you most like to share it with? This will be called your niche or target market.
  • Is there a market for your item?
  • How will your product stand out?

Etsy shoppers connect with items that have a unique point of view, offer something unique, and are beautifully made (or for vintage and supply sellers, thoughtfully curated). There are so many wonderful shops on Etsy that many newbies wonder how they can make an impact. Here are some tips for making your shop shine:

  1. If you notice that there are lots of other sellers with items similar to your, say, children’s hair bows, you may try creating the items in a different and surprising material, or creating a new style of hair bow to stand out. You may stand out with fabulous photos, a great shop assortment, and lots of items for your buyers to choose from.
  2. Create a new product, or find a new way of making something that’s been around for a while. A great example of an innovator is Janick of neawear, who who became Etsy-famous with her “Wall Wear,” a modern art incarnation of cross-stitch samplers.

Let’s turn our attention to photography. Even if you’re not quite sure what you want to say with your Etsy shop, I still encourage you to get out your digital camera and start taking tons of photos. Photography is the most important aspect of selling online, so the sooner you get started, the better. You’ll need a very simple background, some natural diffused light, a digital camera (it doesn’t have to be fancy) and a model if you are selling something to be worn. In an Etsy item listing, you have one main photo and you may upload four additional photos. Use the tips below to use up all your photo spots!

camera

Here are our top 10 tips for taking awesome item photos:

  1. Shoot against a plain background that will complement your item. Large pieces of drawing or watercolor paper work well.
  2. Use the macro mode (flower icon) on your camera when shooting close-ups or small objects. If the photo is blurry, try adjusting the zoom, or getting closer to or farther from your subject.
  3. If you’re shooting small items like jewelry, simple props can help show scale.
  4. For larger items, look around the inside of your home for good locations. Think interesting architecture, beautiful natural settings, walls with interesting textures, or even plain white walls. Is there a location nearby — perhaps a church, library, or abandoned building — that would capture the mood of your items?
  5. If you sell items that can be worn, always use a live model. Adults, babies, and pets all draw in the shopper and help them imagine these items in use.
  6. Use soft natural lighting. Either morning or early evening light works best. Avoid direct sunlight and harsh mid-day lighting. Set up your shot inside, near a window, or outside (but not in direct sunlight).
  7. Never use flash.
  8. Go beyond the overhead or straight-on shot. Make your photos more dynamic by taking the shot from a variety of angles and distances, and then choosing the one that best complements your item.
  9. Edit your photos to make them brighter, crisper and the colors truer. You’ll also want to crop in interesting places to create movement in the photo. It may allow you to get closer to the item for a detail shot.
  10. Use all 5 spots for photos in your item listings to show your item’s use, creative packaging, scale, details, and mood.

Be sure to explore these posts for further, in-depth suggestions.

Now let’s dig into pricing. Pricing can be very intimidating when you are first starting out, but you can break it down using one of many existing pricing formulas. For example, here’s a simple pricing formula created by yours truly. Be aware of the time you spend creating or curating your items, taking photos and doing research. Your time is valuable and you should reflect this in the price of your items.

Setting Up for Success

Setting up your shop requires several steps. The tips below will help you take advantage of each step to start your shop off on the right foot.

Shop Name: Your Etsy shop starts with the right shop name. Having a memorable name is one of the more important things you can do to brand your shop and encourage sales. You want it to be easy to pronounce, easy to spell and it should speak to your style or what your shop is about. Shorter tends to be better than longer. Avoid common words like “designs” or “creations,” as well as number strings and consonant strings that don’t sound like a word in your name — these make your exact shop name hard to remember. Avoid generic-sounding names; something unusual will be more memorable. Do some research on the Internet to make sure that another company doesn’t already have the same name. Exercise: What shop names have drawn you in? Get out a piece of paper and jot down the first 25 business names you can remember. What makes them memorable? What do these business names say about the companies behind them?

Banner: If your shop was in the physical world, your banner would be the sign above the front door. Choose something that looks professional and that will give shoppers a sense of the mood or feel of your shop and makes them interested to scroll down to see more! If you’re not a great graphic designer, you can save time and frustration by buying a ready-made or custom banner from an Etsy seller.

Avatar: Share a sneak-peek into your personality with a well-lit, well-cropped 75 by 75 pixel photo of you. Have one of you and your most interesting item? Bonus! Here are a few examples:

Shipping:  Check out the following shipping article for guidance: 4 Steps to Shipping Success. Take the leap and ship internationally — international orders comprise a big chunk of the market on Etsy! Sound intimidating? It’s not that bad! Read 3 Keys to Enticing International Shipping.

Shop Policies and Profile: Fill them out! Policies define the rules for your shop and can answer buyers’ questions. The Profile page personalizes you; Etsy shoppers love that they buy directly from the artist, so tell them about yourself and your craft to get them interested in your work. Having these sections filled out will help build trust for your buyer, especially if you are a new seller and don’t have feedback yet. Here are some tips for your Shop Policies and Profile Page.

Let’s Get Some Items in Your Shop!

Etsy’s Item Listing guide will lead you through each step of listing an item. We talked about photos and pricing but there are a few other important parts of the listing process we haven’t touched on: titles, descriptions and tags.

Titles: Your titles should be descriptive instead of whimsical. This will help search engines better understand your item listings. Here’s an example: “The Malarie Collection Tee” wouldn’t mean as much to Google (or Etsy search) as “Floral Fuschia T-Shirt – Screen Printed Organic Cotton.”

Descriptions: Descriptions should be in first person; just think about talking directly to your customer in your own voice. Remember to answer all the questions your buyers might have in your item listings while telling your unique story.

Tags: You can attach the important keywords to your item listings — we call these tags. Think about the type of words your buyers would use if they were looking for this item. Get specific! Color, texture, style, and size are as important as the type of item it is. Here is an article with a list of types of tags to help you brainstorm. Exercise: Next time you’re making (or photographing) an item to list in your shop, keep a notebook nearby and jot down keywords to use in your titles, descriptions and tags during the process.

Getting Exposure

Get a little help from your friends: If you already have a Facebook account, setting up a Facebook Fan Page can help you let all your friends and family know about your new Etsy shop. Ask them to share the word with their Facebook friends who might be interested! See Etsy’s Guide to Facebook

Stay active: Don’t put a few things in your shop and then sit back and wait for magic to happen. Imagine if you opened a store in your town but just put a few items on a shelf and then sat behind the counter waiting for customers. Buyers want to trust you, and the more active you are on Etsy, the more they know you’ve invested in your new endeavor. Keep adding stock to your shop and check out other ways to connect with our community.

Get involved: Create a treasury or join a team! Being active on Etsy can also increase your chances of being featured in several places: Treasuries, the homepage, Etsy Finds emails, and the Etsy Blog. The key to getting featured in all of these locations is having great item photos, using tags well, and being an active member of the community.

Resources

Whew! There’s a lot that goes into opening up a new Etsy shop, but believe me, it’s thrilling! Just take it step-by-step, and know you’re not alone. Here are some great resources to use throughout your Etsy journey:

    FripperyFactory says:

One of the most beneficial things we've been able to do is to make Etsy friends after finding their shops. If you have a feller seller who critiques your shop, shares ideas with you, and favorites your items so that even more people can see them, you are truly blessed. Having a friend selling handmade like you are will help you stay happy when you're stressed, stay grounded when you're thrilled about a huge commission, and will ultimately bring your Etsy experience a personal and lovely touch. And isn't that what handmade is all about?

Remember that everything you do with your shop should be designed to engage your customer and make them more interested in what you are selling and comfortable about buying from you. Your lead photograph needs to be just a little bit of a tease. Your descriptions should be personable, articulate and free from spelling and grammar issues. Customers need to trust that you are putting the same care into your listings as you put into your item. Consistency breeds trust. Keep your prices, photographs, listings, products within a reasonable margin of each other. Good luck to you! :-) Bits http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2011/the-bulldozers-guide-to-selling-on-etsy/

Great article which we can totally relate too. For our continued success on Etsy we found out the following: Yes good products and photos are a must but in the end it all comes down to price. That is the number one thing you have to really concentrate on. You can have something that's really nice but if its not priced right then forget it, they are not buying it. Play with pricing here and there but not too much as it can hurt your image but also keep track of the items that are being favorite. Tip: compare the ratio of favorite / item being bought that is key :)

Thank you, fantastic stuff! I think one of the key attributes anyone needs to become a success with their etsy store is the ability to hang in there and not give up, keep adapting and moulding and learning until sales start to happen, and try to avoid becoming disheartened. Some stores will have success overnight and for others it will be a process of dedicated work, sweat and patience. But I believe that perseverance will pay off in the end. Good luck everyone!

Nice advice for shop owners. Thank you! One thing about Flash or No Flash: For my pictures, it depends on the item. Clocks look better with flash, especially the restored ones I have in my shop. I would never use flash for macro mode, as the natural light works best for macro mode close-ups. My natural light is actually a combination of cool and warm flourescent lighting and one halogen bulb. My clock shop doesn't have any windows for actual daylight to enter.

My tips are really just 1. make stuff 2. list stuff 3. blog about it ...repeat. If you make something unique and truly a part of you, you'll sell. I'd like to add to the tip on using a model- if you do, be sure and mention that the piece modelled is for display purposes only and the buyer will receive an unworn one; a lot of people are uncomfortable with buying something that's been worn, especially by babies or animals. I also disagree somewhat with the plain background theory- I think a lightly textured or very subtlety patterned background is the best kind, as plain backgrounds can look very boring after a while (and it gets boring for the seller too). Your background gives your shop as much of it's personality as the items will.

Regarding pricing- I found it very difficult in the beginning. To help me with pricing, my dear husband made me a simple excel table detailing the costs and other expenses such as - commissions (deducted by etsy and paypal), taxes, packaging, shipping etc. I only need to fill out the cost of material and I get the actual profit margin and this way I know how much I should charge for my working time. I then decide what the price would be and when I put the price in the excel table it calculates the total net profit for the specific item. It is a BIG help for me.

Thank you. As always on etsy, really clear and practical advice. With such a big site I have found it useful to follow other people's favorites as a good way to discover other interesting shops. I am wondering whether the choice of avatar- photo of self or of an item- makes significant difference to 'hits'. It is nice to see who is making the stuff, but an example of one's work may attract more interest? ( maybe it depends on how photogenic we are!!??).

Great article. I do agree with Sparrowsalvage, though. I think that sometimes the front page of Etsy gets a little boring and 'industrial' when the backgrounds chosen are usually white. After all, artists dream in color! :) I also believe that, especially with vintage items, white is too harsh. That said, I have tried natural light, inside and outside, and am still having a hard time getting my photos to be brighter... I recently got advice from a professional photographer who recommended making or buying an inexpensive light box, which come in lots of sizes. (and they use halogen bulbs). That is next on my list! Thank you!

I'm not really sure about pricing though...sometimes, it ends up waaaay too expensive. In the end, crafter must adjust the price into what market are still willing to pay...Add with competition with some crafters who just do this for hobby. They usually don't really care about pricing (they price their work pretty low). It's also a dilemma for some Asian countries (especially ones with a lot of handmade produced). If we price it too low, ppl may think,"oh, it must be a sweatshop working." (while actually, it's one person or small team working result who are very skillful and fast in working because they do it for years...The worse experience I had was I was once suspected and reported to the admin of the web mall of not making handmade (sewing bag) myself. Perhaps, it's too 'good' to be a handmade by one person...)... On the other side, if we price it fairly, ppl would also think,"that's too expensive. It's Asia...everything is cheap there..."...I'm not being negative but that's pretty true... Pricing is still an issue for me...Can't really sell low as I work hard for my work...So, I guess, I just haven't met the right consumers who are willing to pay my price

Wow. Thanks Danielle for sharing a wealth of knowledge! Priceless! There's so much to master and so many possibilities to try. It seems a bit overwhelming!! I started my shop in late January but didn't list items until mid February. Just like urbanwillow stated, I've seen some shops started around the same month as mine( or even after), have overnight success, but my sales haven't been that plentiful. For me, it may mean trying a different formula. By the way urbanwillow, your response was very encouraging, urging all to 'hang in there'! Thanks! The sales that I have made have been from my participation in BNR's. Like lickskilletcreations replied, I have had many listing 'favorites' and am eager to turn those 'favorites' into sales! I am currently working on better photos. Any critique of my shop would be extremely helpful! This Etsy community is awesome and with continued perseverence I believe that I'll be able to call my shop 'successful'!

I love this article and will keep it to refer back to over time, even though I've been selling on Etsy for awhile. When I started on Etsy I didn't know a thing about online selling. Prior to Etsy I had sold my hats and flowers through a rep (and paid 40% and up in commissions) and to friends and family. I didn't know anything about the business end of making and selling. Absolutely nothing. Etsy has taught me everything I have needed to know to do this on my own and I find it exhilarating to be the "boss of everything" in my own shop! Thank you, Etsy! Some of what I have learned: The Etsy staff do their absolute best to help us sell and be successful. Their advice and guidance is sound and practical. Follow it and you'll do well. You will learn so very much about yourself by the very act of opening an Etsy shop and learning to do business well. It's a personal journey not to miss. Always be a "Newbie" in your heart. Keep your perspective as fresh and open as possible so you can be flexible and can handle whatever comes up with your shop. Cherish your customers and do what you can for them. Even the challenging ones will teach you how to do things better. Note: wait, wait, WAIT before sending off tricky emails to difficult customers. You can turn an uncomfortable situation around completely with a kind reply, save your sale, and keep a customer. There are endless practical details to attend to pretty much constantly. Take them one at a time in their order of importance and give yourself time. You won't be able to do everything at once and that can be a comforting thought. And the obvious: great photos, attention to listing details, excellent customer relations and communication. All the other stuff gets worked out over time. Best of luck and many good wishes for all the new sellers on Etsy.

Wow... Sooooo much to learn. I knew it will be challenging, but I had no idea about many things. Great article, it had shed some light on things I neglected so far - as for example right listing description, shop policy, about me page... And that's true - for a beginner pricing is so difficult topic! And so my journey begins... Wish me luck, people! :)
