Quit Your Day Job: Poor Pitiful Pearl handmade and vintage goods

Tell us about your shop and the idea behind it.
Years ago, when recycling wasn’t as cool as it is today, I was cutting up my clothing because I wanted to change it up. That birthed a passion to learn how to sew and go to design school, which later fed my desire to start my own business and share my creations with the world. The idea behind my clothing is really about embracing imperfect beauty and not clinging to obnoxious trends and name brands out of fear. Everything in my line is made from recycled scrap and given new life; the base for all of my designs is comfort and effortlessness.

Tell us about your previous working situation/s and how you discovered Etsy.
When I was 25, I had a quarter-life crisis and decided I was not going to wait tables anymore. A good friend of mine had recently passed away and I was reminded that life was short and “waiting for the opportune time” to follow my dreams was silly. One day, while driving around town with a friend, I saw a small building for lease. Thinking it was way over my head, I still inquired about it and filled out a rental application without a dime in the bank or a business plan. You can read more about that story in my Etsy profile, if you like.

As it turns out, I got the shop! I did it all on a shoe-string budget and it was a dream come true. Not even a year later I got married, and shortly after that I got pregnant. I always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom — one who could make her kids pancakes in the morning and wear pajamas until noon, if we had the desire. However, I had an ideal business setup: my shop was right on the beach, the florist neighbors were friends of mine and I was voted best one-of-kind clothing shop in the local paper — business was rocking.

When I prayed over my indecision, it was clear that it was time to shut the shop down and enter into a new life season. I didn’t know how the finances would add up, but I completely trusted that God would provide, and he did. I found Etsy and it has been a huge blessing to me. Etsy has allowed me to be the stay-at-home mom I want to be and also run my business. Etsy has been life changing for me because I can count the days I have been away from my children, and I love that I can say I have been there to witness every milestone of their life thus far. That is priceless.

What is your favorite part of the clothing design process?
I love thrifting and finding cool, unusual treasures. I come home with bundles of sheets, towels, dishcloths, lace, shirts, flannels…you name it and I have had it. When I’m designing the clothing, I’m totally in my element. I have everything all over the floor and I’m throwing stuff around, putting color combos together — usually with coffee and music. I love how sewing mistakes can actually transform and inspire new ideas and creativity.

What are your best marketing tips?

  • Don’t overdo it. You don’t want to be the friend who’s constantly trying to sell you something. In saying that, don’t be shy, either. If the opportunity to present a business card arises, go for it.
  • Use the free stuff to your advantage: Facebook, blogging, Twitter, etc. It helps keep your fans in the know.
  • Don’t be an island: help promote other cool art as well. Constant self-promotion can be tacky, so spread the word for your fellow artisans.
  • Happy customers are the best form of marketing. Take good care of your customers and they will naturally spread the word and return to shop again.

What’s been your most popular item or line to date?
The Oxy. We call it my signature item because I sell ’em like crazy. My customers love how the Oxy can fit a range of sizes and can suit just about any style. I make custom Oxys for customers because they can send in their own favorite shirt and have it PPP’d to their size. It’s a pretty simple, fantastic design.

What is the biggest challenge you face during your daily schedule?
Being a homeschooler and mama of two, my day is busy. I have to be very disciplined. I recently had to hire help so I could have time to make more product. I was maxed out with the 17 or so items I was posting per week. They would sell so fast that my shop would look empty and I had nothing left to keep my shop stocked. I’m pretty frugal, but it really is money well spent if you get to that place where your business is forcing you to grow. I have an awesome assistant, Taylor, who also has a super cool new Etsy shop. Be sure to check her out.

What’s the hardest part about running your own business?
Balance is hard. I can work on something I’m excited about and totally forget to eat. Having a family has helped because I have other people who are depending on me to be normal. I attend to a few emails throughout the day and squeeze in a few errands if need be, but for the most part my days are dedicated to my children. I don’t want them to remember me consumed by the computer and sewing machine. I have to be very disciplined to not overindulge in work during the day. I do most of my work in the evenings, during their nap time and after they go to bed.

Aside from being a mama and a wife, I also try to eat healthy, get regular exercise, be an involved friend and spend quality time with God and in his word. I’m constantly modifying my routine to iron our kinks and find new ways to create balance and peace in my life. It’s an ongoing challenge. Some days I feel like Superwoman; other days I just need a nap.

What do you enjoy most about not having a day job?
Not having a boss is a great thing. I was never very good at taking orders. I also love the flexibility of my day — if it’s raining outside and my kids and I feel like baking something and cuddling, then we do just that. I love being able to stay home with my kids and not have to leave them for work. My job is also really fun: instead of sitting in a cubicle, I’m outside doing photo shoots with my friends, thrift store shopping and wearing fun clothes all the time. I feel like it’s almost unfair that I have this much fun at work.

What is the most exciting thing that has come out of selling your designs through Etsy?
This year I was able to take on homeschooling my five-year-old, and that has been really fun; I’m learning a lot. I may not be a lifer homeschooler but to be able to share in her education and watch her read and write and learn math and the joy that comes over her is pretty exciting. I would not have had this opportunity with a 9-5 job.

The Junk Gypsies, who now have their own reality show and are featured a ton in different magazines, carry my line. Because of that relationship, the country singer Miranda Lambert was spotted wearing my Patchwork Vest on the cover of People. That was an honor.

What advice would you give someone considering a similar path?
I’m with Nike on this one: “Just do it.” I think a lot of people talk about their “dream job” as if it is lofty and unattainable. All of us have a purpose, and our work should be satisfying. Don’t listen to nay-sayers; my experience with people who always think of the ten things that could go wrong is that they are riddled with fear, and it actually challenges them to see other people following their dreams. Trust me, I have my own set of fears too — I think we all do — but I’m not afraid to fail as much as I am afraid of not trying. If you are starting your own business, be prepared to fail at some level. Learn from it, then pick yourself back up, dust off the bad choice and march forward.

In saying that, make sure your motives for considering a life in art is really based in authenticity. Do you have your own unique idea? Do you love making things? Will you still love to make things once it becomes your job? Are you a self-starter? Do you have the discipline? Some honest self-evaluation would be a good place to start.

What does the future hold for Poor Pitiful Pearl?
I have a lot of goals. I am constantly reassessing them and I tend to be really dorky in that area of my life — annoyingly so. I beg my husband to sit down and make goal lists with me. (He is a good man and complies — while laughing at me, I might add.) I would love to learn more about indoor photography, do a trade show, create a maternity line.

But really, the driving force for my line is to be much more than clothing; it’s to be a vehicle of ministry that reaches the unloved. We send 10% of PPP’s profits to Casa Hogar Orphanage. I have big dreams that my designs could make some sort of a small difference in the lives of others, and to know that God is using my gifts in that way would be a dream come true.

Anything else you would like to share?
Some of my favorite relationships on Etsy have evolved into real life friendships, and its been fun to watch other people I care about succeed in their Etsy ventures. I hope you’ll check out these talented folks: sassafrassartrmorattifleurdestonefiredaughterclothingvioletbellaobellaorganics, and eviegreenpixie.

Thanks for sharing your faith, he has blessed you mightily and I can see you're passing that blessing on to others but also by donating your profits to people less fortunate. You've inspired me to do the same when my business is up and running and the verses you've added to the end of your profile were a wonderful reminder why we're here and what our purpose on earth is. Your story keeps my dream alive of making my Etsy shop full time :) I love how you say not to overdo it with promotion and to not become the friend that's always trying to sell you something. Everyone needs to take this to heart. I think that's a tip that just us Etsians take seriously. I have a few friends that sell Avon, Scentsy and I just have to avoid them sometimes unless I want to get sold something. Overpromotion takes a lot out good relationships.

Putting your trust in god is incredibly irresponsible, especially if the welfare of someone besides yourself is at stake. Trust yourself to be a strong, resourceful person, trust your family and friends to help you out in a pinch, and you'll see that you'll be just fine without your imaginary friend. Etsy, please keep god out of your features-I'm tired of a lie getting credit for human ingenuity and achievement.

Thank you for sharing yourself. Your words are so encouraging. I have recently made a similar choice in my life and I did so oddly with much of the same reasons and desires. Hi! I love your story! More people, youngsters and oldsters alike, should just take the plunge as you did. If you start to sink just float back to the top and keep swimming. I plunged into 19 years of a vintage clothing store(BONNIE'S VINTAGE CLOTHING) got sick! sank! ( for a year) then came out swinging. Found myself learning to use a computer at 59 (late bloomer) and I have been swimming every since.(9 years)! Etsy is such a great place for handcrafts and vintage. It's so classy!! The items you make and sell are really exciting--recyling the old and creating the new and saving the planet at the same time--What more could you ask for!! and if I may paraphrase the Bible "All things ARE possible with GOD" Again-great story-great clothing and great sucess to you!! I will be watching you!! Laugh and the world laughs with you ! Cheers Bonnie

    ShannonDownByTheSea says:

This has to be one of the worst interviews I have ever read. I see nothing that indicates success. She got a building, then she closed it. Then she got married, got pregnant, stayed home and opened her business online on ETSY. There just isn't anything original here. A successful business would mean she could stand on her own. So it is easy to tell people, as she did, just go ahead and do it, except that most of us cannot afford to just stay at home and rely on our husband's salaries, or there is no one else to fall back on when sales are inconsistent. I highly doubt her volume of sales would indicate anything close to any definition of "success." As well, I think I would drop the Jesus references. I am a Christian, but I did not come here for Bible study and preaching. I WOULD however like to see a professional article about people (as I have seen some in the past on here) who are genuinely successful, with solid statistics, facts, percentages... numbers. This, like her clothing, just seems to be little pieces put together into an outfit that I do not buy. Please create something that we can really wear. ~ Shannon M. Russell

love your story.. my first recycled handmade piece would be a little red vest I made for my dog LIli, a white puppy/ my first dog. In 1980s, I was a little girl and we always had big bags of clothing from relatives giveaways / good ones we kids wore and the ones that didn't fit, my dad used them for wiping his machines... and you could guess where I got the material for my puppy's vest. :)) Reuse and recycling were practiced in our lives because nothing should get wasted. Til now, when I design, I keep in mind not to waste, sometimes, some designs are inspired from a piece of left over cut fabric. Thank you for your story. Great interview!!

The first year, believe it or not, was the 'hardest', making all the adjustments. Once we got the hang of it, I never looked back. It's a lifestyle and an awesome one. Soooo many blessings. You share in all the firsts, the hurdles, see the 'light bulb' go on, the 'I get it'; and as a parent, YOU learn and grow sooo much. I have 2 graduates, 1 in her final year, and 1 with a few years to go yet. You have a very exciting and rewarding future ahead of you!

It's encouraging to read that someone is succeeding at all the things I am trying to do--be a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom and run a successful etsy business while putting God first. At least it is possible. Maybe someday I'll be able to juggle it all! I try to get my sewing done during naptime/bedtime, but it so often doesn't get there. My kids are 9 months and 2 years old, though--maybe it will get a little easier! Then again, probably the challenges will just be any rate, so glad to see your success.

Hey, I just saw your "feature" article right at the top today! You are right up my alley! I have sewn for most of my life and I love to remake things - hate to throw anything away. I love the long patched skirt! I will favorite you in my "shop". You have a really creative head - I have lots of ideas, too. I am in transition in my life right now, lost my husband a year ago and unfortunately, he was not very supportive of my hobby/business, so now I can begin to think about sparking it up. Good luck to you!!

It was good to read your journey. It re encouraged me. Specially the part of homeschooling my children and taking the time to laugh with them instead of wondering if I should work instead... It is true, you do feel guilty to enjoy what we do so much but that's what "taking the road less traveled" rewards! PS Having the Lord along for the journey does also help:) Magali

Trying to get the courage to give up my day job as a barber/stylist in my on business. Just don't enjoy it anymore and desperately wan to do my dream job full time. I also rely on God to lead me in the right direction. Just very scary to step out there on faith and as you said "Just do it". It's a big risk, but every day gets me one step closer. Thank you for sharing! I am in a different season of life, having home-educated our son and daughter all the way through. I worked in a variety of ways and often found myself overwhelmed. But the Lord blessed us and now they are both in college pursuing their own dreams in art and music. Having hit the "Big 50" this year, I am trying hard to believe in myself and make the arts my main income. It is, indeed, challenging to be creative and business-savvy at the same time. I woke up worrying and God sent me this verse from Luke 12:32: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you." He also helped me to find your inspirational and encouraging words. May He continue to bless you and yours. I just love your work.

I loved the advice you gave. Its not about the path you take.. it is about the attitude you have while you walking that path.

This article totally inspired me. I just loved how she clearly puts her children and God before her business. She totally made me want to just go over and drink coffee and talk about God and art with her :-)

So greatful for your article. I'm just trying to get started in Etsy and I too am trusting God to move in the area of the talents He has given me. I homeschooled my daughter when she was younger I wish I hadn't had to go back to work, so I could have guided her all the way through. The world really changes people, especially young people. May God bless you, your family and your business.

Complete trust in God is the first step in stepping out of the fear zone—making progress in nurturing the gifts of talent and creativity He provides. Interesting story :-)

This is what i want my life story to sound like. This article has been setting in my email for a couple of days. I kept it because i felt i needed to read it. I was moved so much my eyes teared up a little. You gave me the inspiration i have been searching for the last couple of months, & i know being a Christian that God was your inspiration. Thank you so much.

You are truly an inspiration & a great blessing to your family. I too love re-creating the old into something new. I'm new to etsy and work with jewelry now, but God willing hope to expand into other areas. You've been blessed by keeping your eyes on Him. May you always be blessed with creativity. Thank you for a wonderful story.
