Play On: Before They Blew Up

Noah Stitelman is one of Etsy’s customer service whiz kids. When he’s not assisting the Etsy community, he sings in a band called Neighbors. Making music has been one of Noah’s passions since he was a kid, and he’s followed the indie scene for years. In this video playlist, Noah talks up some of his favorite bands — many of which you may also love. From Grammy winner Arcade Fire to indie darlings TV on the Radio, this playlist is sure to bring back memories of your favorite bands’ early days.

This is a great concept! That moment before a band gets huge! I always loved music, but didn't have any talent creating it, so now I create custom jewellery by engraving the notes to your favourite song. My favourite indie band I ever did was Edward Sharpe and the Magic Zeros, the song 'Home'. Thanks for sharing this idea and video.

LOVE David Bowie - when I was a teenager I drew the album cover from "Aladin Sane" on my bedroom wall (still can't believe my mom let me do that) :)

Loved this - plugged in the speakers and rocked. The first time I heard the strokes their sound blew me away. I was working in a drawing classroom with all the lights down for dramatic lighting. The subject the class was drawing looked like a pile of wire and posts you'd find in a junkyard. This quiet guy popped in the strokes album and cranked it up. It was one of those moments where your heart skips a beat and your mind and body sink into each other for a minute in the pure bliss of an unexpected and awe inspiring sound. That drawing I was working on turned out gorgeous.

Wow! Just listened to Arcade Fire video - Fantastic! I have been a Bowie fan since high school in the 70's...and had my most favorite jobs in college when I worked in a couple of Record Stores. Almost flunked out of college 'cause I worked so much. Worked with the entertainment writer for the local paper...so I got into some concerts free & then sat in on the interviews (talking heads was one)! Now my son turns me on to the new indie bands, cause that's what he listens to. Also got to see Stevie Ray Vaughn all the time when he was just a bar band...Fatdawgs...Lubbock, TX! Boy, thanks for the memories!

terrific mix, I remember that Arcade Fire / Bowie moment... the Thin White Duke loves his upandcoming bands! Also re the Letterman comment, remembering his (flirtatious?) interaction with Beth Ditto & Gossip makes me smile!

Great bands Noah... I have been a huge TV on the Radio fan since I first heard Return to Cookie Mountain. Bowie appears on that record also. I immediately went back to the record store and bought Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes and Young Liars. Love and own every album they have put out now. My mom also became a big fan. She compared them to early Genesis. (with Peter Gabriel) David Sitek's new project Maximum Balloon is also very amazing. TVOTR fan for life! I like the other bands too ;) Wolf Parade was a new one for me though. Thanks for sharing.

I love the whole "stand up band" thing going on in this video. Reminds me of seeing the Pogues a few years back. Lots of different instruments, passion and dedication makes this a beautiful success with the added Bowie ensemble. Thanks for your blog. Neat O

Way to make myself sound like a pretentious hipster fart, but I remember just after the Arcade Fire released their first little EP playing a few shows here in Guelph in the old Ed Video space upstairs in this wee little space that sat about 30 cross-legged on the floor, with half the band members apparently almost too tall for the space, and Richie banging on the ceiling with drumsticks by way of percussion. To be honest, I got a touch selfishly sad when they went supernova famous because it meant they wouldn't be playing shows in little spaces in my city anymore. Which blows because more really good bands should be playing here, not less. Poopy poopy poop.
