Scotland is the ancestral homeland of the Deerhound, a charming and elegant hound, described by Sir Walter Scott as “a most perfect creature of heaven.” Thinking about my own shaggy jokester, my beloved Dogwood, I searched Etsy to create a picture of today’s Scotland, that complex mixture of independence, granite, water, myth, grit, humor, fire and brimstone. Some may find its history romantic, Bonnie Prince Charlie and all that, but the story is actually much richer. It is both tragic and stubborn, a tale of a great diaspora of talent and intelligence. While nothing is better than visiting the source, exploring the land through movies and books is a voyage unto itself.

I Know Where I’m Going is one my favorite movies filmed in Scotland. With excellent acting, photography, drama and humor, it also features Deerhounds at their most natural.
