Notes From Chad handmade and vintage goods


Hi everyone,

It’s been just over a week in the new role and it’s been really good to hear from so many of you. Along with the kind notes of congratulations was plenty of constructive feedback on how to make Etsy better, and I appreciate it. With 800,000+ sellers and 25 million monthly visitors, there’s a lot of feedback to consider. One seller wrote something to me last week that reflected the general sentiment: “We all have desires and agendas, myself included, but mostly I just want to continue to be successful making and selling things.” I hear you loud and clear!

We know every seller wants to… well, sell. You have amazing items in your shops, and you want to find the right homes for them. On our end, we have a few different jobs to do. We have to prepare for the influx of buyers this holiday season, improve search, and deal with issues like resellers. I’ll talk about each of these below.

The best way to make sellers successful is by bringing more buyers to the site, and the holiday season is the perfect time to do that as more people press their noses against the virtual windows of your Etsy shops. There are only four months until peak shopping season and we’re focusing on the holidays earlier than we ever have before. We’ll be talking about this in the coming weeks, and you’ll be hearing more from folks on the various teams at Etsy who will be working together to make this the best holiday season ever for Etsy sellers. (Judging from the Christmas in July Treasury lists that I’m seeing, you’re already thinking about the holidays, too.)

With more buyers coming to the site over the holidays, we know it’s critical that we improve the search experience on Etsy. We want to make those changes well in advance of the holiday season to give you plenty of time to prepare, so we’ve begun communicating what changes you may need to make to your listings.  Last week, you heard from Natalie on the Blog and from Frank in the Forums with advice on how to make your listings perform best in search sorted by relevancy. As both Natalie and Frank wrote, we plan to make search sorted by relevancy the default search setting, as our measurements and experiments have proved this is the strongest site experience.

Since we’ve added “sort by relevancy” as a search option, we’ve seen an overall increase in listing views from search, which is exciting. You can see how you are doing as we make changes by checking out your Shop Stats. We’re continuing to make more improvements and will communicate them to you all along. Improving search is a job that is never really done. As Frank said, a great search experience on Etsy also depends on sellers being accurate and descriptive with their titles and tags, so we need your help, too (again, Natalie’s blog post contains great guidance). Aside from bringing more buyers to Etsy, we’re going to be focusing more intently on creating a happy and thriving environment for sellers. Last week, we formed a new Seller Happiness Team internally. This new team will include people from all over the company with a focus on making running your shops on Etsy both delightful and rewarding. We’ll be engaging with the seller community more publicly and more deeply with a unified cross-disciplinary effort from teams across the entire company. The first task of the Seller Happiness Team is determining how we will measure happiness in the seller community so we can set a baseline for how we are doing, and then improve upon it. As I wrote in my last letter to the community: “Etsy is a marketplace, but what makes it special is that it’s more than a place to buy and sell. It’s also a marketplace of personal stories and connections.” Happiness will include making sales, of course, but we also think happiness comes from the unique sense of personal connection in the Etsy marketplace. We’re just kicking off the work of this team, and you’ll be hearing more from me and the members of that team in the coming weeks and months about it.

Finally, I have spent a lot of time in the past week meeting with teams inside Etsy to better understand the reseller problem so we can be more effective in addressing it. Kruti wrote about what we’re doing in early June (see Forums, Blog). As she noted, we’re attacking the problem by hiring knowledgeable staff and building better tools and we’ve made some progress — we’ve reviewed and taken action on more than six times the number of accounts as we did one year ago. We need to make more, though. As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” so I’ll be focusing more of the company’s energy on understanding and addressing the core issues that lead to resellers being visible on Etsy. We’ll definitely continue to step up enforcement, but we’ll also be doing more work to address the root causes of the problem.

You’ll be hearing from me very regularly here — sometimes as often as once a week — as we get down to work. Thanks again for all of your feedback in my first week in the new role, and I’m looking forward to working with the teams here to make Etsy an even better place for all of you.

    I'm really looking forward to the changes. I really miss my views jumping up after I tweeted :(. It made me feel like people where really looking at my stuff. I wish the filters would go away.     Thanks for the effort so far everyone... I am wondering what the plan is to bring back "ALCHEMY" ? That would be a great addition for holiday sales, as many sellers are also buyers and want to find some other sellers who create things they don't, that way we all support each other... not to mention that some Etsians are strictly buyers, heh.     I really appreciate how upfront Etsy is about recognizing the challenges sellers face and working with us to give everyone the chance to be successful. I can't even express how much better the listing, search and blog interfaces have gotten since I started selling almost 2 years ago... listing new or similar items is a breeze now, there are no more issues with non-paying buyers, and there are so many helpful articles. it's like every time we ask for something, Etsy is right on it! I'm really happy to be part of such a cohesive and cooperative marketplace... thanks for all you guys do! :)

    Thank you Chad for remembering that we are out here hanging on your every word. I for one am very disappointed that my efforts have not brought more traffic to my store. I have spent countless hours working on SEO from every source I could find, both here and outside of Etsy and still my shop does not come up on a google search and I have less than 10 "visit" per day. Needless to say, that even though I am happy with the majority of the new changes and the fresh approach you seem to have, the old SEO nemesis still haunts me. Overall though, I am pleased with my Etsy experience so far. pat

    Chad, sounds like everyone in the Etsy offices is very busy these days working on all of the changes being implemented. We are new to the Etsy community and are busily working on putting our shop together and learning all of the ins and outs of being on Etsy. I would like to suggest that with all of the upcoming posts communicating new improvements that they be placed in one location for sellers to review; for example in the Announcements or Site Help in the Forum. Just jumping around from the links in your post was awkward and confusing. It's a thought anyway, thanks for listening.

    So glad for updates. I am nervous though about the search changes so close to the holidays. I've noticed that relevancy search seems to be going back and forth between working like Natalie said in the blog post and the version from a couple months ago that gave one seller preference for pages and pages of results. All the flip-flopping is making it difficult to make our listings as relevant as possible.

    Thanks for your hard work and communication. I don't want to be negative but I am still very concerned about resellers and I don't quite understand what is meant by "addressing the core issues that lead to resellers being visible on Etsy". Could you communicate more as to what you believe these "core issues" are? Also, are you talking about visibility in terms of frequency or the fact that they exist on Etsy in any capacity? It is vitally important for Etsy to weed out these resellers even though they contribute to the site's financial bottom line. I would hate to see Etsy become Walmart just to make a little extra money. I have faith that you are working on this and that you will hopefully take swift action against these resellers. Thanks again for your hard work. I really appreciate it. I am just concerned about retaining the integrity of a genuine handmade marketplace.

    Resellers really need to be addressed. Here are some tips to spotting resellers: When you see a certain product begin to proliferate through several different sellers, you know the product is coming from a supplier, not a handmaker. Witness the "orchid" line of "gold" and crystal/faceted glass lines. Through, you can locate the Chinese-based source of these items that some Etsy sellers are claiming are handmade by them. They are not. Another tip: Look at how fast these shops have grown in inventory. It's impossible to hand-make this fast. Also, look closely at the offers for bulk orders from these shops. These are all clues. And they are nice items, too. But they are burying those of us who honestly and sincerely make our own designs and unique shop offerings.

    "The best way to make sellers successful is by bringing more buyers to the site" I agree 100% with your analysis, but I take issue with your solution. Your solution is better technology. How is THAT going to "bringing more buyer" to Etsy? What Etsy needs to do is ADVERTISE! Do your own "jaywalking" experiment. Ask 100 people if they know who eBay is. I would be surprised if eBay didn't have 100% name recognition. Now for question #2, ask them what Etsy is. The answer will tell you where the problem lies. I have done this with my friends and neighbors. VERY FEW people know that Etsy exists. I am confident that people like my products. I sell the same things on eBay and Etsy. I sold 6.3 times as many items on eBay last month than I did on Etsy. Spend some of our fee money telling the world that Etsy exists.

    Welcome to Etsy! Love the changes in adding and editing a item. Can the team set up a way to add and remove the same info to all existing items? Example-adding Free Shipping to title and sale in tags. Then removing info after sale expires.

    Crowdsourcing. That will be your best solution for getting rid of resellers. Instead of closing threads and ignoring people who "call out" on the forums, why not investigate? People don't bother to speak out because of the flippant and dismissive way the admins deal with reseller complaints on the forums.

I feel like the search is rather biased towards handmade - can't the default for search be "all items" ? I don't know that everyone remembers to switch it to "vintage" or "supplies" when searching. Also it would be great if it could be 'sticky' for a while - so you don't have to keep switching back when you change your search words. Also - in vintage, we really need more categories! I have a couple of requests/concerns. I know Etsy used to be just a handmade site, but it has included 'vintage' and 'supplies' for a long time.     There have been some super useful new features added lately! LOVE that you can do draft listings; I really like the streamlined listing process; the additional search categories/labels you've created are a great idea (really seems shopper-thinking-oriented--great!!!); the stats page is a great idea, much easier to get to w/o a bunch of Google Analytics gobbledygook; and the color saturation and clarity of the photos in my shop make me really happy. And I LOVE the activity feed. It seems to me a really powerful tool--instant word of mouth!! Looking forward to more good stuff.

    One other 'thing' with me. I feel that Etsy mostly pays attention to items in the household, jewelry and clothes categories—vintage and handmade. Probably art ob-jets are third. But toys, doll clothes…the handmade stuff for kids are barely on the radar. In the new listing builder section, the styles and special events tags just do not work for me—barbie clothes maker that I am. Last year I asked if the sales breakdown in the monthly sales could be by department/category, if you will. I was told it's too hard to separate. I don't believe this. If there are categories in the listing builder, then there is a way to produce sales results—yes? Maybe with the new energy you bring, you would be willing to look into the idea of providing more indepth sales results for all of us. Thanks for whatever you can do! It is fun when I sell something once in a while.

    Nice tone, nice focus on a few of the site's biggest problems. Resellers are not just problematic to sellers. As a buyer, I don't come here to have to paw through the "racks" of discount junk. I expect to see genuine handmade items, genuine vintage and the supplies. Period. When I search, I want no filtering beyond my own keywords, and I expect exclusion functions to work. No helpful hints, no you might like, no taste test, no circles. I don't expect you to remove these functionalities - I just want a clean search *option*. And all social and/or data-sharing functions must be opt-in. You will have credibility only if the statistics you cite are accurate. The 800,000 seller accounts doesn't sound right - are you sure that number doesn't include closed/inactive/empty shops? Looking forward to future updates and, more importantly, future action.

    The new changes have been good and the plans sound promising. We definitely need buyers directed towards etsy, but I think there is going to have to be some advertising for that to happen. No one that I know had heard about Etsy before I started talking about it. People ask me all the time where I sell my items and I say "Etsy" and they say "What's that?" I'm looking forward to more people knowing how wonderful the people in our community are.

    I have been a etsy family member since 2007 and purchased on the site before that. I wanted to say that you guys really saved me. Really my house my car and everything else that I have I would have lost if it was not for etsy and my store. The changes will only make my life better in the future with all of the wonderful additions. The ones I like best right now are the shop stats I am totally addicted to them and all of the upgrades so I can work on my iPad. I still can not upload photots but hopefully that will be soon!     Before becoming a seller on Etsy I never bought anything here because I hated being forced to "join" something to make a purchase. Allowing purchases as a guest would be the perfect solution! But I agree with many of the comments above about getting the Etsy name out there. Most people that I mention Etsy to say "What is an Etsy? How do you spell it".     I'm very frustrated with the lack of views at my shop. I opened in Feb. 2011 and have just a handful of sales. Each client has been pleased with their order, but I am having a difficult time enticing new clients. I've read everything in the manual and your various blogs. I've changed titles, tags, shipping, prices -- but so far, to no avail. I've joined circles and teams. One team removed me with no explanation!!! HELP!!!!

    Strength in numbers is good when dealing with the reseller issue. At the same time... I've reported two shops nearly 10 times in the last month to no avail. They are still making the front page of etsy on a weekly basis and still have thousands of sales. I even talked with a mod directly about the issue. She asked me to send her the two links to the shop and POOF! nothing happened. it's sad. Still.. I just keep making my stuff and selling it. What can I do about it? not much.

    Ebay's new free shipping is hurting lots of sellers in area's that work here. BUT in order to leave there for good people need to know where and what ETSY is. I have to agree NOW is the time to ADVERTISE. I would move my 1000 listings over in a heart beat if I had the customers! Why not take advantage while the time is ripe??

Unfortunately checked "priority upgrade" , "gift package upgrade" , "shipping upgrade".....etc. instead of do - don't list... I saw hundereds of list USPS upgrade , priority upgrade .... etc... I've listed ... Still now on :) --- Etsy deactivated this listing. Please check your email for more information.--- I was checked again these search term and I saw again hundreds list...This is very sad...And I don't any contact about this matter...I make only 1 - 2 item flag and results unchanged... When I checked "priority upgrade" , "gift package upgrade" , "shipping upgrade".....etc. Still I see hundreds of list... I decided in an emergency...I have adapted all these fast shipment costs to all my item...This is a risky decision for me...But I had a great Xmas season...I said , I'm full time Etsian & I haven't daily job now... Now sales aren't going well for me...But I know why :) I believe there's one thing , this season will be better than 2010 Please add an option to "Expedited Shipping" section in shipping profile... Ps:English isn't my native language...And I feel that ; there is somebody other side of the world listener , audience ,communicating ,generating solution ..... etc ... Thanks for your time...     i would really like to see etsy become more mainstream. there are still too many people who don't understand what etsy is and who have vague anxieties about purchasing from sellers on etsy. etsy needs to work to become as well known online as Macy's department store is as regular store. Resellers are definitely a demoralizing problem and also so bad for our business. If potential buyers see resellers charging too much for things that are going for much less elsewhere, they might think that it's too easy to pay too much for something and leave our site!

    A lot of great comments so far. Chad, we genuinely appreciate all you and the Etsy Admins are doing, and we love many of the recent improvements to the listing process. BUT PLEEEEEAAAAASE reconsider making "sort by relevancy" the default--we have tried absolutely everything we've been told to try by the Etsy seller handbook, and still we are mystified by the formula the site is using to determine what comes up. Etsy is our full time job--we are TERRIFIED that the site is planning such a major change, when in practice it seems to be so unpredictable. If you must make the change, please, please consider waiting until after the holiday rush. And please be clearer with us about what we need to do to get our items seen! Peace and love--CircesHouse.

We do need a stable and secure website to sell, buy and communicate. I like the recent improvements and hope switching to Relevancy search will only make the things better. As a seller, I'd love to see two more options: 1. Drop-down menu of shipping options (like, USPS First Class, Priority, Express, etc.). 2.     So appreicate the update. One thing that has always impressed and encouraged me here is how much help there is for the seller. From being able to ask a question in the forums and get instant help to Etsy's emails with advice and information - just awesome. I'm very happy here. The front page thing is of course a little annoying. It does wear on you a bit to see several sellers who are on the front page every single day - without fail - and there are a few who are on more than once a day quite often. It would be GREAT to have some kind of limit like you can only be on once a month or something. I'm glad for those sellers but it is a bit confusing how this happens every single day. Thanks again for continuing to strive to make this a wonderful place for so many of us!

    Chad, Please advertise Etsy on TV. Marketing is everything, every person I have asked in my home town if they have heard of Etsy said no. I live in California. My shop sales are all coming in from the Eastern side of USA. Starbucks has over 30 years, and this year I saw their first commercial and it blew my mind. I said to myself 'That's What Etsy needs!' If Starbucks is advertising then so should we. Perhaps we can't handle the volume of sales that would happen if we grew too quickly, but we will never know unless we try. Thanks Adriana

    Welcome Chad! I appreciate your efforts and letters. I don't know if it's just me, but since the new SEO, my visits have dwindled to nearly nothing. Is it just me? I've been a seller for two years and I've never had days where I have ZERO visitors - now it's the norm. No sales, no convos, no favorites - it's like my shop no longer exists. I'm reading everything, changing my titles, changing my tags, upgrading my photos, connecting to google analytics and NADA. I've never been more a more frustrated Etsy seller than in this last month. HELP!

    When I say professional advertising, sometimes the people I meet who *Have* heard of Etsy have unfortunately only heard about Etsy as the punch line to a joke or through sites that live to make fun of the more unusual items that can be found here. Etsy Inc ought to be stepping up to project a cohesive professional image of the great artists and sellers found on Etsy without caving to the Portlandia wry hipster weirdness of 'put a bird on it'. It's weird. Like another seller said, all my business comes from the East Coast, there's a whole world of buyers out there, market to them!

    I imagine most Etsy sellers are tech savvy but there are likely a few oldtimers who aren't so into it, I for one. So, hoping you'll keep things simple. Also, living in a rural area without many choices as to service providers, the provider charges a premium for going over the time they allot, videos and that sort of thing eat up alloted internet time so memos and tips in plain text are a kindness. My stuff is vintage and I'm glad to have such a friendly and funky site to sell from but I will ba adding handcrafts and there's no question they are the big draw, so have to agree with those who argue for strong action regarding resellers. Thanks for the dialogue, sadly a rare opportunity in the commercial world.

    I have wanted to close up shop because of no sales, but with so many vendors selecting my art as a favorite, a red heart or in their treasury, I am hanging in there waiting for the busy holiday season. I have made beautiful Treasuries and received low clicks and low comments about them and never once got noticed by the Etsy's teams front page in six months of opening. I have read and printed out all the information to have a successful shop to no avail. Ditto - Circes House and Shiny Rabbit in regards to front page sellers success stories. It's so bitter-sweet. Bitter for me and sweet for them. I love the entire concept of Etsy and look forward to their team focusing on the sellers team and helping us to make sales. I did like the magazine story about your founder this spring. I read many comments above about Esty not being known. I have been an Ambassador for Etsy in the states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut and New Hampshire.

    I am indeed happy to see all the positive changes Etsy has made. One of my concerns is this statement "we give some priority to the most recently posted items." What this seems to mean is that the items just posted or renewed will get the most focus in a search. As it stands now It is necessary to renew too often to keep your products up in the searches. Far too often a shops profit goes back to etsy in renewal fees. If a shop doesn't renew often, they do indeed fall to the bottom of the barrel. It would be great to see a solution to the need to constantly renew. Facebook and Twitter doesn't seem to be the answer.

    I am really looking forward to hearing more and good luck to the new CEO and team. I have been on etsy for 4 months now - no sales yet - my items will need to be renewed soon but before I put items back on the virtual shelf I need to reassess where my Etsy Shop is going before spending valuable time with it. I wouild like to know more about the figures eg what countries or regions have the highest buyer number or sales trends - and how to educate or influence more people to get into this habit way of shopping. I use facebook page also but I feel there is more to learn. Etsy is a wonderful display area of talent and it would be great to be a successful part of the sales end of it too.     The best news I've heard in awhile......your plans to communicate with the community! That would be such a positive move here on Etsy. So many sellers have been at a loss with so many unexpected rapid changes. Change is good, but being prepared and understanding the changes is necessary for sellers to keep up and adjust.     I can't wait to check my site stats and see what the new changes will bring to my little corner of Etsy! I'm also glad you're aggressively dealing with the issue of resellers. People come to Etsy for unique, handmade and vintage items: not mass-produced, low quality products. Although I have to admit sometimes I think some of the dresses are 'cute' from resellers, I'd rather buy it at the appropriate $9.99 at TJMaxx than for the inflated 'handmade' price of $100+ because they're fooling everyone on Etsy! I am concerned though as my views have plummeted since this relevancy testing has begun .. despite me changing titles as per instructed.(mine has been set to relevancy default all week so I believe I must be part of some test group) . I find renewing to be very successful for me but will be far less likely to use it if there are only 4 most recent items showing at the top of search. It will just not be worth the money anymore....even if it somewhat factors in to relevancy it is just not the same :( So I am understandably concerned LOL Can anyone be on the "Happiness Team"? Sounds fun... sign me up!

    If someone could make Treasury Listing a whole lot less complicated - I simply find it impossible to get my head around the instructions, let alone creat one - that would be a marvellous boost to my Cuddlies!     I've seen it already mentioned that etsy needs advertising. However I think it is important for etsy to note that if you advertise you not only increase sales for sellers but you also increase sellers. Think about it. More people comeing to etsy means more sellers selling here and more money for etsy aswell. It's an overall win for etsy. A small advertising investment could result in a huge boom for both sellers and etsy itself.

    I am hopeful to see Etsy move in such a positive direction! I do agree with glendalee about kids items not being highlighted much and would love to see that change since the accessories I make are primarily for children. Also, I am a little confused about the new search as I recently listed a couple of items with the first word of each of their titles being Showstopper and if I search Etsy for that word, 107 other items come up but my items are not there at all. It's sad, because I feel they are my two strongest items and could bring me some (long awaited) sales.

    Thanks for all the communication - always a good thing! I'm a relatively new Etsian , especially in that my experience/learning curve has been long and slow (and, yes, it still continues)! I now have the confidence to forge ahead, largely due to the encouraging and helpful Etsy community, and I do plan to ramp up my shop and get with it! Any communication that is specific to how to make our listings get found will be greatly appreciated! Also, I would like to see some tweaking of the feedback system. I have had fabulous buyers thus far, so no problems at all with the system as it stands, but I know the possibility for a bad experience exists. I know feedback is a difficult area to manage, but I would like to see it become more objective and fact-based, especially where negative feedback is involved.

    Oh, I dream of being able to batch edit listings!!! natalya1905 says: "Batch editing option for titles, tags, price, shipping charges. It would be a huge time saver." Etsy...Please consider this (at least for price & shipping), it would be an awesome time saver for all sellers, especially with the price of our supplies/shipping costs fluctuating wildly in this economy! We as sellers can only absorb so much in the way of supply/shipping increases, then we need to edit our listings to reflect our increases. Hope this makes sense.......not too sure about adopting the "search by relevancy". And getting rid of resellers seems a near impossible task...the resellers are what killed eBay (for me anyway), and I know eBay doesn't have a problem with them (resellers) since they (eBay) are making a killing on the listing/final auction value fees. It just makes it so hard for the handmade, vintage, supply seller to be seen amongst the endless sea of mass produced stuff...I will say eBay definitely got it right when they started media advertising...they really had a clever marketing campaign that people clearly understood + it was downright entertaining. Etsy already has an awesome creative team, and I am sure they can come up with an awesome advertising campaign of your own! Sorry for the long post....

    One formerly deleted option I would like to see is being able to forward a page by the individual page space that used to be at the bottom of the listings. I think alot of buyers would appreciate that feature. And since I make jewelry a listing for Crystal and Pearls would be helpful. Thanks

    Welcome to Etsy Chad, I am so-o-o very glad to know that improvements are going to be made. Please give attention to all the comments regarding investigating resellers and advertising etsy so that people will know that we exist. I am new to Etsy and currently I did not renew anything in my shop because I was very, very disappointed because of the low amount of views I got. I did everything that was suggested - tags, descriptive words etc, and not sales at all. I got laid off from an office position which I held for over 40 years and was encouraged by a friend to use my creative talents and sell things on Etsy in order to get some income. I have absolutely no sales experience at all so this was frightening for me to sell to the public. However, I am going to go full speed ahead for the coming holiday season and get new items in my shop. I am very glad to hear of the changes and hope that Etsy pay attention to the feedback they are getting. Those of us who actually use our time to make things to sell are very passionate about our products. Thanks for the updates. Because of the economy, I feel that it would be good if buyers are able to search by the $$ that they are able to spend, this would prevent them from wading through hundreds of items before they get to those they can afford. Also it would be helpful to see for example scarves - how much is the etsy buyers paying for the different kinds of scarf. That would let the sellers know if they are overpricing or underpricing. I still do not know how to price my items. Anyway, I feel that Etsy will continue to succeed, and I will do my part to help. Remember, the American public now wants items made in the USA and not from China. Leave that to Wal-Mart. Help promote Etsy to the public.

    I'm ecstatic that you're doing regular posting Chad. An engaged CEO is always a bonus. I have many things to comment on but will limit myself to advertising etsy itself. The poster who talked about the Jaywalking Test is spot on. As print advertising is not always targeted, and broadcast is expensive, I have 3 ideas: (1) pitch to the NEWS media (I work in news media) to get more STORIES out there about etsy. For instance, our local newspaper did a small story on 3 local etsians. My friend's sales soared. (2) Advertise on the web (facebook, etc., as well as similar sites). (3) This will be controversial, but, put some of the onus of advertising on us SELLERS. Give each seller (or each new seller, or anyone that asks for one) a bumper sticker or t-shirt with an etsy logo. When anyone asks about it, WE can spread the word. I find that etsians are hyper enthusiastic about etsy. This is the first site I turn to when I want to buy a gift for someone. Etsians are also eager to promote their own shops, but others as well. Plus, once someone is converted, they will tell 2, who will tell 2, etc. Just a thought. Put something in motion well before the holidays! Thanks for your thoughts and time.

    I understand what you are saying about the relevancy searchability ... but my question is, why isn't there relevancy for the millions of yarn dyers, knitters, crocheters, and spinners who buy and sell on Etsy? When I went to update a listing for yarn, the drop-down box wanted me to categorize it as "modern" or "bohemian"--totally not an appropriate drop-down box for crafters, scrapbookers, etc. either. Shouldn't there be a relevancy option that says something as simple as "crafts" or "yarn" or "knitting"? Not everyone is selling a vintage item, or re-selling a vintage item. So many of us are cottage industry sellers, but we get such little recognition in the handpicked treasuries and featured listings that it's dificult not to feel ignored by Etsy. Please help us to be successful sellers in this way, too.

    Hi Chad. Thanks for sharing. Here it is in a nutshell: Etsy started down the wrong track when it abolished THE most community part of this socalled community by eliminating the FORUMS. This was how we communicated both with one another as sellers, with the buyers, and with administration in an open, clear, fashion (well, you know... the best that could be expected.) Going to Teams was one of the worst possible choices and directions ever, and I will tell you right now that I do not know of many buyers (who are of course encouraged to join teams) will do so just to have a question answered. The end result: a fragmented and user unfriendly environment. As for RESELLERS, you are talking about this like it is a new issue. LOL This has been a thorn in everyone's side from day one, and by getting rid of the forums in favor of this complicated, indirect way of dealing with it pr any other issue (Teams), the problem has become quantumly worse. The rise of resellers, the decrease in inventory and sales, with inventory lower, started just as soon as Teams were implanted. There are a lot of changes which have backfired. This filtering process also brought my Google alerts to a screeching halt, and it did it IMMEDIATELY. Those bots serve a high purpose. They may not be people, but they helped all of us who use the social media to promote. Unexpected things happen when these filters are put in place which are unforeseen, but my experience is not singular. The usual solution in most of these crazy, unnecessary changes: if it ain't broke don't fix it! We have plenty of ways available to sort out and interpret our shop traffic. My advice is to listen >LISTEN < to your primary customer: the sellers. Without us, Etsy is nothing. And, the direction in which it is going is more social networking (which we can do well on our own thank you) and less focussed on the handmade community and it's counterpart in supplies and vintage. My highest prayer is that you reverse this trend and bring the Etsy we all miss terribly back to us! That Etsy is a community with more transparency, more direct communication, an easy way for buyers to see what's new (remember the "Promotions" forum.... ...) Bring it back from becoming this bizarre lovechild of Ebay and Facebook. Get back on purpose. OH... and I still cannot bear to look at the main page. The same handful of sellers (who are wonderful yada yada yada) are STILL THERE 24/7. No one is being given a fair chance... and don't get me started on this atrocity of billions of treasuries taking up space and fostering the continuation of the main page hijacking.     Had to pop back on to say thank you for having the Engineers do that livestream session Chad... that was VERY helpful to watch. AND the good news is that after 2 days of following their advice and tweaking titles I am seeing my views come back up to where that had been (panic attack over lol) And really I have only gotten to 1/2 my listings... I still have a bunch to "fix" so this is a good sign.... thank you Chad for keeping us all in the loop and I look forward to more livestreams :)

    Its not just the main page that features the same sellers over and over, but also the etsy admins who write the blogs. I have been keeping stats for Get the Look Decor, the same handful of vintages sellers in rotation from Sunday to Sunday get featured. The last blog post on gardening by a guest blogger featured one vintage seller a dozen times. This should never have been allowed to be posted. Chad, you are concerned about seller happiness? Then spread the Etsy "love". Daniellexo did a blog post on how top sellers are sucessfull depite ignoring the suggestions for tags & titles.

    I would like to see the option for sellers to choose from their listings to do partial sales at XX discount, instead the entire shop being put on sale. Selected item sales draw buyers into shops, and the sale items can be rotated. (On a side note could Etsy make a tag for sellers who are on multiple teams? So you could list more than two? This would be very helpful.) Also a new customer of mine who was buying from different store was totally baffled at having to check out with each separate store. For people who are used to Amazon this totally confuses them.

    Please, please, please get the word out about ETSY so people (other than current buyers and sellers) at least know the name and why they should come shop with us. I opened my shop a few months ago and not one person I've told about it knows what ETSY is, and I live in a VERY artsy town. I also feel that getting your shop started, in terms of those first few sales, is very hard. I think that one way this could be helped is to allow a shop to create a plain treasury (non BNR/BNS) in which they can feature at least 1-2 of their own items along with others they find that go with the chosen theme. I do understand the camaraderie of the current treasury procedure but this can work against shops that have much smaller inventory at any given point. If all shops were at least allowed to create one treasury a month that they could include an item or two of their own, I think that would still be very much in the spirit of ETSY to promote yourself AND others. Thanks and hope you will consider these changes.

    Changes seem to make no difference for my shop. I have tried everything suggested in forums and by mentors and nothing seems to get me the sales I'd like to have. I've almost ready to give up and concentrate solely on my own website. I suspect the typical Etsy buyer is not really my market, for the most part but I don't know how to ascertain this for certain. I no longer get excited about changes as long as they aren't overly detrimental to either sellers or buyers.

    Good to hear of Etsy's plans for the coming months. I'd be interested to see how Etsy is planning to get the word out to the world outside of all us existing Buyers and Sellers so that we can have their eager little faces pressed up against our virtual windows. We're trying to raise our team's profile in the 'real' world but obviously have nowhere near the resources that Etsy does so it'll be interesting to see what happens. Anyway, good piece thank you, you even got a spot in out team's fortnightly newsletter and you can't get a higher accolade than that! (If you want copy convo me - hey! I know it's a shameless plug but it's a good newsletter!)

    Awesome, I'm so looking forward to continuing improvements here at etsy, and glad you will be concentrating more on input from sellers. I, for one, have been very happy with most of the changes. Love the ability to draft listings for future posting, love the one-page listening and ability to upload 5 photos at once and to preview each photo in the main spot before listing,andlove the new stats............yayayyyyyyy. But I'm also thinking most of you are not parents, and aware of the caution new parents observe that the initials of the newborns don't embarass the child amongst his peers know, like Steven Ulysses Clark or Daniel Ignatius Kelly or Valerie Davis..........did you consider the acronym for Seller Happiness Team? Maybe back to the drawing board on that moniker? LOL!

    Chad, I have seen a notable shift in the Etsy paradigm since you have taken the lead. Based on my experience of you, I anticipate a significant rising of the integrity bar and look for Etsy to benchmark itself with other successful sites on many levels. Acknowledgement of the main issues is a welcome beginning. Furthermore, I would hope that the communication door would be opened wider to incorporate participation in projects from Etsys internal customer, the shop owners.     Personally I don't like the new automatic "relevancy" search. I much preferred the "most recent" search and it was much better for sales. It doesn't seem fair to us little guys who just add a few items here and there. I've listed a few things and then done simple test searches and I've never seen my items listed on the first page, except if I click the search type back over to most recent. My sales way down as well as my hits. Please change it back! Very dissapointed :(

    Hello Chad, I am very new to internet marketing and to Etsy. I am like the one person who said they appreciate the simple explanation because of poor computer savy. I haven't been with Etsy long enoung to understand what Alchemy is and how it worked, or what relevanticy is and how it works. I have had my Esty shop since Sept of 2010 and I have read almost everything listed, and have read every comment that has been made on this forum, as well as others, I do agree that Esty sellers need to have better exposure to the public and that advertising is a vital thing. I love how Etsy sellers are willing to help one another and Etsy allows a good system to help those sellers to promote their shops among themselves, but buyers outside Etsy are scares. Exposure out side Etsy is almost none. I too have spoke to individuals at different shows I attend and when I hand out my business card I get asked "What is a Etsy website?" I agree with the shop owner that said if you ask someone about Ebay it is know !!! Raised eyebrows when Etsy is mentioned , well that speaks for itself. I also would like to see individual shops being allowed to list one or two of their items in treasuries, or havling a treasury once a month with items from the individuals shop itself. I understand why this rule was done, to help each other advertise for one another, but what if no one lists my items in their treasury. Also I love the feature for coupons, but having to discount every item in my shop instead of being able to choose what items are to be put on sale at what percentage or price isn't what I feel as the shop owner is best for my sales. Also not having the freedom to use multiple coupons at the same time in order to offer different percentages or sales at the same times limits my ability to adapt prices according to what will help me not lose money while trying to make money. I do love the Draft opition on listings. I love the fact that Etsy is a place Craftrers can go and be involved with others who appreciate "handmade" as much as I do. I love the many Etsy sellers who make you feel welcome and being among friends. Etsy is great in that aspect of encouragement. I too have become discouraged that sales are almost nothing, 5 sales in 10 months is discouraging and believe me I've been discouraged by that. I've become discouraged by the Front Page. I don't even look for my shop anymore. There are always going to be issues, and all of us are aware of that, but Your attention to the needs of sellers weather they agree with your ideas or not is a great step in moving forward in not letting the Etsy spirit get lost in the "big Money Making machine" that doesn't care about the individuals, but only in the money they can make them. I wish you and your staff the best in your endeavors in making Etsy the best it can be. Thank you.

    Hi Chad. Thanks for all the work you are doing to improve Etsy. I found Etsy through an article in Art Jewelry magazine. I am relatively new to Etsy (1.5 years) and am pleased with the continuous changes to the site. As a former vendor, of smoke fired pottery and clay and silver jewellery, at craft shows (20 years) and One of a Kind Christmas Show in Toronto, Canada (7 years), I have seen what lack of quality control can do to shows. I have not participated in craft shows for over 6 years, as the quality of vendor items has deteriorated and therefore the discriminating customer no longer comes to what were formerly quality shows. I have seen many resellers at craft shows in recent years and the issues they create for organizers. Buyers also spot them and don't return to such shows. It is a big issue on Etsy, not too difficult to spot in Etsy shops, and I'm glad you are trying to address it. Craft shows have deteriorated in their quality control, over the last number of years and many of my friends who relied on shows as their sole family income are now only wholesaling their work. Customers are willing to spend money for quality items and I hope Etsy keeps up its quality control. In Europe quality of handcrafted items are so much appreciated and prices are paid for quality not quantity. I realize that Etsy is a business like any other business, here to grow and make money, but please listen to the sellers. I am glad to have a shop on Etsy. It's a great alternative to doing craft shows and I've met great customers and other vendors through Etsy. I've promoted Etsy to my artisan friends and several are now in the process of preparing to open shops on Etsy with their unique hand made items. Etsy is a great idea, venue and the the Administration's efforts to improve the site is wonderful and on going. Thanks, keep changing and keep the quality growing. Vera

    Chad, I have just had the most horrendous experience on Etsy. So have several of my colleagues. Are you aware of the work that Etsy Marketplace Integrity is doing? Please ask Katie to see my email with all the attached exhibits and get back with me. I know that you must be overwhelmed but there has been a growing grassroots movement to leave Etsy that I have just ignored until now.
