We are a pair of disembodied heads, covered up to our necks in nubby linen bedding, our arms breaking free occasionally to feel around for snacks. I wish I had known I would miss these days the most, sprawled out like the summer. We are partners in stillness and anti-work inactivists, training our whole lives for a day in bed.

The dog, uncooperative, refuses to bring us more snacks. It’s an arduous journey to the kitchen but we need fortifications, some bubbly water, perhaps, and a nibble. Grab the laptop charger on your way back.

Our stomachs are unstable countertops, warmed by a morning’s worth of gossip and PayPal. We toss around and save each other from falling off the island into hot lava, forming a terrain of blankets, little mounds for our feet and elbows, with pockets of coolness on the other side of the pillow.

Somewhere in the last episode, you slipped into a nap, lulled by blackout curtains and the indeterminate time. I like to fall asleep to the sound of you breathing. I wake up every morning wishing I could spend another day in bed with you.
