The Walkmen and Etsy: A Handmade Collaboration handmade and vintage goods

Popular music today is generally very, very awful. The few moments I spend trapped by an FM radio tuned to anything other than NPR are among my most dire. While Justin Bieber is one of the cutest little ladies I have ever seen, take away auto-tune and she sounds like a 13-year-old boy.

Thankfully, we live in an age where we don’t have to rely on the radio to bring us great musical talent. We have Etsy for that…well, at least we do now.

As a musician myself, I have long seen the parallels between handmade goods and songs. When done right, both are products that spring from the heart and require great taste, craftsmanship, and practice to create. Both have the power to move, inspire and entertain us. To me, handmade is more than just a means of production. It is about a way of living, a state of mind, and mostly, an expression of the person who made “it,” be “it” a scarf, a film, a poem, or a song.

With this in mind, we are honored and happy to bring The Walkmen to Etsy.

The Walkmen are one of my favorite bands in the world, and I am not just saying this just because I’ve known them since we were wee pups running wild in the streets of Washington, D.C. Instead, I love these five talented fellows because they are true craftsmen. They are sculptors of songs, knowing intuitively which pieces of marble to leave, and more importantly, which to chip away. They are scholars of earlier craftsmen like Bob Dylan, The Pogues, Bob Marley and The Kinks, to name a few, but like all great artists, they have a style that is totally their own.

September 14, 2010, they will be releasing Lisbon, their fifth full length album. To celebrate, The Walkmen and Etsy have teamed up to present limited-edition, signed, handmade packages and items inspired by their new album and the city that inspired its name.

For the unique collaboration we worked with three Etsy artists — littletired, beauideal, and sheepshead — to design a limited-edition silkscreen print insert, album poster, and T-shirt. These featured packages will be available exclusively on Etsy.

At Etsy we love artists, and if you do too, you’ll love The Walkmen.

The Related Items for this article were selected by The Walkmen bassist and founding member, Walter Martin.

Catch The Walkmen live in a town near you, from Leeds to Lisbon, Vancouver to Vegas…

*Please note, T-shirts and posters are not included in the LP/CD packages. ALL orders must be submitted by Wednesday, September 10 to ensure arrival by the release date of 9/14.*

I never knew Etsy can be used to promote music, but this makes a lot of sense- with forums, you can get feedback and with so many other artists on this site, you can collaborate with others here as well to build a great product.

I'd never heard of the Walkmen before today. But something in your comment about trying to avoid FM radio music in a frantic search for the local NPR channel made me laugh and laugh. I am very familiar with that situation and decided I had to give the Walkmen a try. And I loved them!

this is very cool. it would be nice if etsy could somehow dovetail well crafted, creative,experimental/traditional/whatever, and intelligent music into the site. it would take a lot more tech, but it's something to think about and it would be an exquisite antidote for what's out there.

My husband and I recently started our own business - Plainclothes Press. We hope to work with local (Saskatchewan) artists in putting out small runs of their albums with handmade packaging. We've already done two albums, but hope we'll be able to do more. Our website sucks (under construction, boo!) but you can check us out on Facebook. We'd like to eventually extend our borders and work with a variety of artists in a variety of ways.

Watched the videos of the guys playing in the NY Library and am hooked.....LOVE THEM! Incredible to perform so raw, showing pure talent. Thank you for introduction Matt, will be buying their music for my studio & looking to see if they come to LA.

Thats a great idea for bands to do some extra promoting and promote and highlight the work of talented artists! On the water is one of my favorite songs... You know, alot of people know Ingrid Michaelson now but back in the day she sold signed copies of her CD herself.. and now shes on radios and commercials.. its cool. Its like good bands finding a way to break through the boundries set by record companies to reach a new group of people. just an idea.. and maybe this isnt possible.. but I would like to see a custom signature package.. my friends birthday is coming up and she loves the walkmen.. I'd pay more to get the CD signed to and for her... know what I mean?

We are all for promoting the music because we totally agree Music Is Art & Craft! Fun article too! And we absolutely L-O-V-E the Bieber satire. Or is it satire??? You Rock Matt! Great job! All of us here at LeafandInk.

I haven't been able to stomach commercial radio for years now. This is an interesting thing happening here with Etsy and music. I came across an interesting musician on etsy by accident. They had a very cool handmade item in their shop and then I noticed they also had music available, it was a cool thing to stumble upon. this is the shop It would be nice to have a music themed storque article at least once a month around here.

As I began to read the post I was envisioning an etsy with indie music, you listen as you shop, and then you have the option to buy the music you were listening to. awww..come on man, what about Taylor Swift?!? ha, kidding, kidding. I love the walkman myself, I only liked them until I saw them play five or more years ago at a large concert venue. They made some sort of comment like "what, why are you all watching us, Tone Loc is playing!" And THAT made me love them. BTW--anyone who doesn't know their music, I highly recommend attending a show of theirs. There don't seem to be many rockin' bands these days. And boy, do they rock. Good time, for sure.

Um, I am no fan of Justin Bieber, but I find it pretty offensive for you to call him a little lady. I imagine you were trying to be insulting, yet why is it insulting to call a young man a girl? What's wrong with being a girl? And what's with with a young boy being effeminate in any way? Way to insist on gender norms. I usually find etsy to be more tolerant, and yet here you are using such a cheap shot. I mean, you don't like his music, fine, complain about that.
