Stories From the Chilean Earthquake

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Lolo_bio_pic.jpgWe cannot adequately express our sympathies for Chileans in the wake of the recent earthquake and ensuing tsunami. Our thoughts are with the people of Chile and those with loved ones in the country. Lolos is a native Chilean who gathered these moving stories from fellow Chileans in the Etsy community and would like to share an outreach project that you can participate in — read more to find out how you can help.

I am a Chilean artist, actor and designer who was born in Viña del Mar, a wonderful coastal city, and raised in Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world. My whole family lives in Chile including my widowed mother and my brother.

For now I’m living with my adorable family (husband and daughter) in Gainesville, Florida. I opened my Etsy shop lolos about three years ago.
Chile is the land of the Mapuche warrior, of the good wine and the coveted copper. It is long and narrow, from north to south, with arid deserts and fertile green valleys. Chile is the land of songwriters and wholehearted poets that sing of illusion and hope. We are dreamers and fighters with 200 years of living and thinking of love.

My cell phone was ringing early Saturday morning, February 27, and I was woken up by my sister, who lives here in the U.S. like me. She gave me the news from Chile. I had so many thoughts in my head at that moment. I was scared about my mom and my brother. We could not communicate with our family for a long while, as the phone lines were dead. Minutes of waiting were like hours. Finally, after trying and trying, I was able to break through and it was an enormous relief to hear the voices of my family sounding good and alive.

I immediately began thinking of my other Chilean friends. Here are some accounts from the Etsy community who personally experienced this disaster:

Chile_mtn.jpg

memegalarce: “My friends, it was horrible. The earthquake reached 8.3 on the Richter scale and it never ended; people slept in the streets and there are 82 dead and counting [Note: It is estimated that the current number is around 800]. Buildings completely collapsed, there is flooding in the south and on the islands, and the airport and bus terminals were closed for at least 48 hours. All over the central and southern part of the country there is a state of catastrophe. The most affected city was Concepción.”

aylla: “I am okay and my family as well. It was a tremendous scare — it was terrible. I live on the twelfth floor and it felt as if the building was about to fall; I feel so lucky that it held up. Everything flew off the shelves and fell down — bookcases, TV sets, etc. But the important thing is we are all okay. The sad part is that there are too many people in different regions that are suffering tremendously, dead or disappeared.”

mylittleaura: “I experienced the quake like a tourist, in a downtown adobe hostel, as I was visiting from the U.S. I thought the building would collapse — the beds were covered in dust, stucco and even nails. At least I was with my husband and my children.”

brushdesign: “It was so strong — a horrible scare and I was so nervous. The worst thing is that there are lots of aftershocks that continue scaring everyone, including myself. People are without water, food and electricity. They are desperate and reverting to looting to get food. The regions are devastated by the tsunami and the roads are completely blocked. I am still uneasy, but personally I am okay.”

Patchwork_blanket.jpg

Thank you, friends. Now my people need help. Every single day the situation over there is growing worse. A group of women in Chile are organizing an event called “frazada solidaria” (solidarity blanket) where they are creating patchwork blankets made of 20 x 20 cm crocheted or knitted squares, utilizing any type of yarn. These squares will then be sewn together to create the blankets, which will be donated to relief efforts.

If you want to help make one or more squares to donate to this great cause, please Convo me as soon as you can! I will be sending the squares to Chile, and after they receive the squares they will have a special ceremony to put them together and create the blankets.

For donations to Chile, just go to this link where you can choose from a variety of relief organizations. For more information on how you can help my people please feel free to Convo me anytime. Thank you so much for your support and help!

Thanks to lolos and our other Etsy contributors for sharing Chile’s story after this tragedy. Our hearts go out to all Chileans and we wish you a swift and safe recovery.

My husband's family is all in Chile and are luckily ok -- way nervous, though. My son's Middle School teacher just called to ask about organizations to which they might be able to donate proceeds from the Bake Sale they'll hold next week. She also told me they'll let the students pay $1 per day to be allowed to chew gum, they're calling it, "Chewing for Chile". If any of you can make the suggestion at your schools, please do so -- what a great way for the kids to help. In our case, they were extremely sensitive to my children's needs and I can't believe how wonderful their outpouring of support is.

Thank-you for writing about this. It feels like this event has been overshadowed by the event that happened not too long ago in Haiti. Please understand, I am not trying to downplay what happened in Haiti at all. Both tragedies are so overwhelming. Thank-you for sharing these stories!
