Shop Local Boutiques: Young Blood Gallery and Boutique

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

yb_bio.jpgMaggie White and Kelly Teasley are the founders of Young Blood Gallery & Boutique. They got their start in 1997 hosting art shows in their home and eventually moved into an alternative gallery space. In 2003 they opened a boutique, which features items that are handmade and designed by up-and-coming artists. They were excited to go full time in 2008 and now run both the gallery and boutique in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia.

YB_shop.jpg

We became best friends at our high school in the Georgia countryside. We each have country and city roots and share a love for both lifestyles. We moved to Atlanta and threw ourselves into the local art and music scenes, but the country was never far behind. The selections here are from our shop and represent our Southern city souls, as well as many Etsy artists.

YB_wingding.jpg

Wing Ding Construction is Frank Saggus from Colbert, Georgia — right outside of Athens. He creates birdhouses from salvaged lumber such as barnwood and found objects like door knobs, shoe forms, and garden tools. They are beautiful relics from the old timey south.

YB_R_Land.jpg

You can’t get much better than our buddy, and the prince-of-all-things-weird-and-wonderful in Atlanta, RLand. He blesses our city with coffee house murals, album covers, Adult Swim animation, and “anonymous tags and telephone tack-ups” that give the middle finger to the corporate boobs.

It hasn’t even been a year since we fell hard for Arkansas’ Roll and Tumble Press, and it’s love that we hope will last forever. Christie and Caleb do all the art by hand then hand-crank prints from their antique press that they brought back to life. They consistently send us fresh work and each time we open a box it’s like releasing love notes into the air.

Katie Kortman from Suwanee, Georgia is Blue Eyed Freckle. We’ve worked with her for the last two years and she quickly became one of our bestselling artists. Just about every woman that walks in the shop picks up a piece of her functional art and oohs and ahhs over it. She makes headbands and clips from felted cut-outs of floral and geometric shapes. They make us feel pretty and special, and we thank her for that!

Miss Super Etsy, Jeanette Zeis, is the little engine that could. She keeps the kiln fires burning as a full-time crafter running three Etsy shops: Vessels and Wares, Vegan Dish, and Quiet Animals. We carry her candy-colored pottery and look forward to the silkscreened animals that she and her boyfriend, KennTwoFour, are now collaborating on. They are devoted to la vida vegan and are members of the Vegan Etsy Team.

Atlanta is a lot happier since the Happy Family tree planted its roots here. Lori and Starbuck said goodbye to their day jobs and now crank out their silkscreened designs on a full-time basis. We love working with them because they have clothing for adults, kids and babies and cute handbags and totes, too!

Dolan Geiman and his new bride and business manager, Ali Walsh, live in Chicago but get a Southern pass from us, and it’s easy to see why. His artwork captures the roots of rural America and his materials include paint from Chicago’s exchange program and silkscreens on weathered, rescued wood. We love his themes: old cars and trucks, county fairs, country music and wildlife. You can read about their lovely wedding here.

Meg Leigh lives in Athens, GA, where she works at UGA by day and on her Etsy shop, Go Meagan, nights and weekends. We’re thankful for her stamina because she supplies us with some of our bestselling jewelry. She has a wide range of simple and feminine pieces that appeal to many women who have completely different styles.

YB_punkin.jpg

Amie Needham is from Houston, TX and started A Punkin Card Company in 2007. She creates all of her cards and stationery by hand in her home studio. We haven’t had the pleasure of meeting her in person yet, but we have a pretty good feeling we’ll get along with the woman who came up with these gems.

YB_Plaza_order.jpg

Mr. Thomas Burns, the artist behind Atlanta Vintage Travel, is our homie who supplies us with our (very popular) Atlanta landmarks art. His work is illustrated by hand and finished digitally. Featured here is our city’s oldest movie theater, The Plaza, and on his site you can see our city’s oldest lounge/strip club, The Clermont Lounge. If you haven’t heard about what happens there — well, we’re gonna have to leave that discovery up to you. Ask for Blondie.

YB_bikemugs.jpg

Ah, Dovetail. Margaret and Josh Smith live in Lexington and give us warm fuzzies all day long. We love working with professional crafters and they are johnny-on-the-spot when it comes to following through.  Everyone loves their porcelain pottery with screenprinted cityscapes, sea life, chairs and more. We can hardly wait to see their much anticipated new line, coming soon!

YB_12_players.jpg

What can we say about Roy Fleeman that isn’t summed up in this print? We think he sums up our beloved city, Atlanta, Georgia!

It looks like such a wonderful little space with awesome finds! I really enjoy those squareish bike mugs. There was once a place here in Salt Lake with creaky wood floors and a lovely, old turquoise door. It was so charming and unique with high ceilings and big windows, and it always had THE BEST gallery stroll shows and one could find perfect presents there during every season. It was in a very old strip once used as a loading dock for farmers. Sadly the whole row of little boutiques and shops was evicted and bulldozed to make way for high-rise condos. *Grumbles*. Stupid fashionable high-rise condos. I have always longed to open my own little boutique featuring handmade items from local artists, and to participate in our Friday night Gallery Strolls. Maybe someday? Congratulations Maggie and Kelly on your years of Young Blood success! A great story!
