Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Ann Harward and I’m from a smallish town in California called Yuba City. I am a twin which is why the shop is called Lou and Lee…thats what my dad called us growing up. I now live in Provo, Utah with my husband in a house that was built in 1948 that we just completely remodeled. My sister Amy and I decided to open up an Etsy shop with all of the stuff we love to make. For Amy it was her beautiful photographs (which she needs to replenish) and I added the headbands, clips and onesies.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Well, I do spend most of my time creating things…even when Im not working, like painting and anything else that I can do that is creative. I LOVE watching movies and spending time with my husband Adam, hanging out with my sister and her 2 darling girls, reading, and spending time with my family.
What first made you want to become an artist?
I have loved all things creative since I can remember. My sister and I were always making a mess with a craft or project of some kind. We are still making messes to this day with holiday crafts, banners, and anything else we can think of. When she started having babies it was so hard for us to find cute headbands and clips for her girls that didn’t all look the same, so we made our own.
Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
When an idea pops into my head (or Amy gives me one, which is a good portion of the time) I waste no time. Im impatient and have to get started right away. I mostly use felt but try to incorporate vintage lace, vintage buttons, and vintage fabric (which I have buckets of thanks to my husbands grandma who use to have a fabric store about 20 years ago). There is definitely not a certain time for me… sometimes its early, sometimes its really late, sometimes its all day.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
When we moved into our new home My sister gave me a beautiful framed collage of colorful doors that she had taken while on a trip in Europe, I love it because it is perfect for my house.
Name your top five books, movies, songs/musical groups, and web sites besides Etsy.
My top five books are: A heartbreaking work of staggering genius, East of Eden, Jailbird, The bell jar and Im a little embarrassed to admit this but the Twilight books. My favorite movie is probably The Big Lebowski. I love all kinds of music…Mates of state, Andrew bird, The smiths, MGMT…and my favorite website is hands down amyfurstenau, beautiful!
What advice would you give to artists who are new to Etsy?
Try to keep it new to the customer, keep creating and adding new things to your shop.
What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see?
I love to look at the treasury to see items I probably wouldn’t be looking for. I would love to see a feature of the most popular items on Etsy.
How do you promote your work?
Mostly by word of mouth and trying to add new items to the shop so that its always fresh.
In ten years I’d like to be…
Still making things that I love.
