Hot Tip: Resizing your photos the easy way!

Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Ever wondered how some sellers always seem to have their images perfectly sized and cropped to make the perfect looking thumbnail?  You want the secret? Well, search no further and check out this great little video tutorial I found on YouTube all about how to resize your photos!  Watch it by clicking the play button below!

Resizing your photos can also be useful for emailing your photos and uploading them all over the web. Keep in mind, to get that perfect looking thumbnail in your Etsy shop, crop your photo into a perfect square just the way you like it…that way, your image will show up just as you planned!

In case anyone wants to check out another option, I use photo software that you can download free from Shutterfly at http://www.shutterfly.com/studio/overviews.jsp I use it to edit my pictures, crop, brighten, even straighten. The last thing I do is click on the Refine tab and select the Resize option. You essential enter the pixel width you want like in the examples above. You can edit the picture directly or save it with a new name.

This is a great video for resizing. What else I still don't know is what size the photos should be for ETSY. Avatar? Banner? Listing photos - 5 thumbnails with the ability to zoom in on one photo at a time? Pixels and not dimensions in inches? Size in k's? Is resolution and pixel the same thing? I'll get there, but your help would really be appreciated by this Newbie! Thanks so much!

    Nanantz says:

When all I need to do is resize my photos, I use Paint (in the Windows "Start --> All Programs --> Accessories" folder). The Image --> Stretch/Skew menu option in Paint will resize your photo by percentage. Just make sure to use the "Stretch" option, and use the same percentage for horizontal and vertical values. This keeps the proportions of the photo the same. To check the size of the photo while in Paint, use the Image --> Attributes menu option. You can select whether to display the values in units of inches, centimeters, or pixels.

Totally stressed over trying to get my photos uploaded so they are not blurry. I hope I can figure out this process as I really want to be able to set up my shop. Why did etsy make is so difficult to upload photos to their site? Wish it was more user friendly for dummies like me. I make fantastic jewelry, but as far as computers are concerned when it comes to this kind of thing, seems I need to take a class in uploading pictures. I have never had this problem with other sites. Wish esty would fix this problem. I see others have had the same problem. It's enough to discourage a person from setting up thier shop at all. Obviously I am brand new to this and really need help.

I am still confused. I have Picassa and have been trying to edit in that. Seems like it should be possible and can do everything else. When I try to click on the resizing function, it seems like I still can't get it to go on to a small enough size; etsy keeps telling me my photos are still too large.

    FolkArtFromFlorida says:

What I do is pull up my photo and right click, pick send to email, a window pops up wanting to know if I want to resize my pics, I say yes, then when the email pops up with the photo attached, I copy the attachment and paste it where I can find it again later. My pics fit Etsy but would they be better if I did this through Irfanview or webresizer?

I have over 40 years photog experience and computer experience since home computers were invented. Also, why are we limited to 2 mb? what up with that?
