Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, affiliations, personal stuff).

Hello!

CUBIST LITERATURE=C.Lit, if yr nasty=me=CRAIG HUNTER.

I have a mind that exists somewhere between Bratmobile and Pierre Schaeffer. (YOU figure it out.) I’m 22-32 years old. I am 5’8” (been this way since I was 14). And I live alone in a two-bedroom apartment in Houston’s museum district. I’m looking to find a best friend. And possibly to take a lover. I plan on being famous or somewhat well-known.

I’m quite confident when I say I can do almost everything. Because I can. I have a knack for teaching myself how to do things. And I have a lot of patience (except when I’m waiting for a cool Etsy purchase to come in the mail).

CURRENT LIKES!: “-graphy”, hamburgers, exacto knives, telling lies, Wikipedia, no-wave, text/instant messaging, BEER!, cardboard, rapid heartbeats and alertness, waking up early. CURRENT DISLIKES!: humidity and heat, pigeons and doves and sparrows, people who complain about things but don’t do anything about them, bills, close-minded people, words like “liberal” and “conservative”.

Beer for breakfast? Yes. Screening phone calls? Of course. Rambling? Always.

What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it?

Oh, I have no idea whatsoever. I’m sorry.

However, there was (is?) this one photo I remember seeing of myself as a baby playing out in the mud. So, I suppose I was making mud pies or something. I don’t know. I also don’t know why my parents were letting me play out in the mud while wearing diapers…

I think I ruined this question. I’m sorry x2.

What inspires you? Where do your ideas come from?

I’m inspired by really cute things and really offensive and ugly things. Messy handwriting. Typewriters. Switching words around. Crying children, laughing children. Ripped pieces of paper. My friends, my family. Myself. When I’m trying to sleep at night, or when I’m waking up in the morning after getting really drunk the night before. Girls with guitars. Lots of distortion. Seeing the right colors together! Xeroxing an image over and over until you can’t recognize it anymore. Repeating a word over and over until it doesn’t sound the same anymore and has lost its meaning. Punctuation. Being able to admit that I’m wrong.

What are your favorite materials?

I like working with used clothing.

Felt, sharpies, pencils with no erasers, pens running out of ink, fresh sheets of paper, medication, scotch tape, words and language, cardboard.

What is your favorite color?

I like the color of lo-fi art-punk.

What are your most and least two favorite films?

I really don’t like going to see movies, and I always get bored watching them, too.

I have some favorites, though: (in no particular order) Ordinary People, Fargo, Clueless, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Halloween, Pink Flamingos, Mean Girls, The Ice Storm.

Two movies I really hate and really am ashamed to have seen: Saw and Hostel. (Being unnecessarily gory and disgusting does NOT make a movie scary. Jeez.)

What are you reading right now?

I am reading “The One and the Many: A Contemporary Thomistic Metaphysics” by W. Norris Clarke, S.J. (I had to look up what the abbreviation “S.J.” stands for. Apparently it refers to a Catholic religious order, Society of Jesus. Jesuits will sometimes put the letters “S.J.” after their names to indicate membership.)

I was going to explain what the book is about, but never mind. Just think St. Thomas Aquinas, modernism, metaphysics, ancient philosophy and things of that nature.

Any tips on selling handmade stuff?

One word: KEEP IT REAL!

While it’s not always apparent, every single person is an individual. Your individuality is something you should grab by the hair and vomit all over your work. Everything should be a reflection of who you are or what you like. Don’t make anything YOU aren’t satisfied with. If your heart is in it, others will notice.

Also, knowing how to promote yourself and network with others is VERY important. If you think you can do this all by yourself, well… you’re talking crazy.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

When I’m not skipping class, I’m a student. I am almost finished with my fifth year at the University of St. Thomas, a small private college here in Houston, Texas, where I am getting my BA in English Literature. I’m also minoring in women’s studies and creative writing.

Usually I’m in a band, but not at this moment. (My band LADIES WHO LUNCH just died.)

And I’m a radio DJ. I have a spoken word show on Rice University’s radio station, one of the better college stations in the country. Ya heard?

How can Etsy be improved? Any feature requests?

Nothing important comes to mind! I think that Etsy’s a great site. I really have no complaints.

(But maybe stricter guidelines on what is actually handmade? I wouldn’t mind that at all.)
