Project New Year: Start Your Business

We know that selling on Etsy can be a great source of supplemental income. Here at Etsy, we also know that many successful sellers are stay-at-home mums, with dedicated hobbies that have grown into thriving online businesses. These mums have businesses that they run on their own terms, on their own schedule, from the comfort of their homes. To many of these mums Etsy provides not only supplemental income, but access to a community of other women who are also juggling home life with running a business.

Knowing this, we decided to team up with mum blogs from around the world for #ProjectNewYear. With their help, we’re spreading the word to mums everywhere that they can start a business from their very own homes, and still reach millions of customers worldwide. The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to start something new. To help mums get off the ground, we’ve developed an educational blog series written by Etsy experts, including Etsy Admin and sellers. The four-week program covers the following topics:

Week 1: Starting a Home-Based Business
Week 2: Getting Help From Your Community
Week 3: Connecting Your Brand With Customers
Week 4: Marketing and Promoting Your Shop

We’re elated to team up with a variety of stellar partners to share this inspirational, hands-on content. Check out our partners for #ProjectNewYear below.

I put my career on hold to raise my children, though I still needed to express my creativity and wanted some financial independence, thats why I opened my Etsy shop a couple of months ago. Ive only had a couple of sales so far, but am just so happy to be part of the Etsy community and have been getting great feedback and help from my teams and the forum. Ive no doubt my business will be a success, thats because I don't want to go back to my day job now, Im determined to make this work! Cheers to all you Etsy mums! Rose xx

I have tried my hand at many things to earn a few extra dollars. When my children were young I worked at home making bikinis for the local surf shop, then went on to jewellery making and hand-painted designs on tee shirts. All of which brought in the extra little bit of money needed. Now many years later I'm living near a beautiful remote beach and making some great things with the shell I find on the many walks along the beach and sell them online. My moto is - Try your hand at anything - give it ago!

Arggh... Balance! Sometimes I wonder if it's possible - I'm always teetering one way or the other. Over Christmas and New Year I enjoyed just being Mum for a while, so much so that I extended it for a couple of weeks after we went away. BLISS, and my 2 littlies loved it. It's time to get back to work now and this year is a new start, with a schedule I can sustain, taking my business (still feels a bit weird to call it that!) seriously, and Sunday is Family Day - no working....Here's to a great year for Mum's everywhere! x x

Like most of the comments above I also am trying to find that balance we all talk about and wonder if it even exists. I have just opened my little shop in the hope of some success so that I can be there for my kids when they need me. I'm determined to make it work also and will cheer for all the other mum’s out there who are doing the same. Karenxx
