Last year we launched an Etsy-first: working together with Plan International Australia, our Australian seller community came together to Make For Good. Sellers created products inspired by Plan’s mission to change the world for girls and donated at least 20% of proceeds to their Because I Am A Girl initiative which works to help girls everywhere learn, lead, decide and thrive.
Our incredible community answered the call, and together were able to raise more than $30,000! Not only this, but two participating sellers were able to travel to Cambodia to see Plan’s work firsthand and participate in a skills exchange program with local women in a remote village. See their story here.
Make For Good in 2016
We’re so, so excited to announce that we will be running the Make For Good campaign again in 2016! We will be continuing to work with Plan International Australia to support Because I Am A Girl and cannot wait to see what we can achieve for girls around the world this year.
Get inspired: this year’s theme: “Creating Brighter Futures”
This year, we’re asking our creative community to create items inspired by the idea of “Creating Brighter Futures”.
Through their Because I Am A Girl initiative, Plan International works tirelessly to create a world that values girls, promotes their rights and ends injustice, so that girls everywhere can learn, lead, decide and thrive. When girls are empowered – when they are granted the education, skills and rights they need to move from poverty to opportunity – they can create a brighter future for themselves and those around them.
How to get involved
Of course, we can’t do this without the support of our amazing community of sellers (that’s you guys!).
Here’s what you’ll need to do to be involved:
Step One: Register
Head here and fill out the registration form so we can be sure to keep you in the loop with all things Make For Good!
Step Two: Get creative!
This is the fun part – time to get your creative juices flowing! Create a product inspired by this year’s ‘Creating Brighter Futures’ theme or select an existing product that you think fits the theme.
The theme of brighter futures can be interpreted in so many ways – the possibilities are endless! Some of our favourites include:
- Using bold, bright colours in your creation
- Incorporating ideas of sunshine and sunlight
- Future looking bright? Hats, sunglasses and sun products are all needed
- Think about how education, opportunity and equality can lead to a brighter future
- Style the photos of your item with a bright backdrop or props to draw on the theme
We’ll be sharing more ideas and inspiration in the coming weeks, so get ready for inspiration-a-plenty.
Once you’ve created your item, it’s time for a photoshoot! Bring your amazing item to life with some gorgeous photography.
Step Three: Prepare for launch
We’ll be launching the campaign to the public on September 6 and it will officially finish on December 19.
We’re asking everyone to wait until August 20 to start listing their products. (Our tip is to create a draft listing for your product so you’ve got time to get all the details right, and then all you have to do is hit “Publish”).
If you make OOAK items, it’s up to you if you’d prefer to publish on August 20, or wait until September 6. And of course you can list new items any time during the campaign – it’s never too late to get involved!
Step Four: Get social
Join the Make For Good Seller Facebook group and get to know other sellers participating in the campaign. This group is also an amazing place to ask questions and discuss ideas and is also where Etsy Admin will be posting updates and latest news.
Step Five: Spread the word
We’d love you to share the Make For Good news with other Australian Etsy makers that you think might be keen to get involved. The more of us who Make For Good, the more we can help girls everywhere learn, lead, decide and thrive.
Closer to our public launch date in September we’ll be sending everyone who registered some digital assets to help you spread the word about Make For Good across social media (and don’t forget to use the hashtag #makeforgood). You’ll also receive a digital template for a printable flyer that can be included with your items when sending them to the customer to let them know all about the campaign.
The difference we can make
We have the opportunity to make a real difference.
In 2015 we had a goal of $20,000, and we able to raise an amazing $31,997. We cannot wait to see what the community will be able to achieve in 2016!
Etsy will once again be donating commission on Make For Good products sold to the Because I Am A Girl campaign (up to a value of $300,000 gross sales) and launching a marketing and PR campaign to support your work on this wonderful cause.
We’ll be sharing more about the campaign and how to get ready to Make For Good on the blog, the Make For Good Facebook group and through emails to registered participants between now and campaign launch on September 6. Sign up to stay in the loop!
A few things to note
These are a just a few things we wanted to let you know before you sign up.
- Participants must donate a minimum of 20% of the sale price of their Make For Good product/s to Plan’s Because I Am A Girl campaign.
- There will be 4 donation periods between campaign launch (6 September) and Christmas. We’ll be sending participants reminder emails with all the details on how and when to donate.
- There is a minimum donation of $2 per donation period. If you don’t reach this amount in a donation period you can wait until the next donation period. If at the end of campaign you haven’t reached this amount, it’s at your discretion if you choose to round up and donate that minimum.
- It’s important that you include the makeforgood (no spaces between the words) in the title and tags of all your Make For Good listings. It helps us and buyers find your product!
- We’ll be providing you with a blurb about Make For Good to include in your product description closer to launch date.
As part of Make For Good, Plan International is offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for two fundraisers to travel to see first hand the work Plan is doing to help make a real difference to the lives of girls held back by poverty and gender inequality and participate in a Skills Exchange Program with the local women. We will provide more information and selection criteria as we draw closer to the launch of the campaign. The experience was a life-changing one for two sellers who travelled to Cambodia earlier this year – check out their story here.
