If you’re new to selling online or dream of starting your own Etsy shop, let Etsy Resolution be your guide this new year. Starting your own business might seem daunting, but Etsy Resolution makes it simple and fun (and it’s free!):

  • Four simple instructional emails that will outline how to open your shop, from finding inspiration to making your product look pretty.
  • You’ll get the support of a community of peers while you create your shops together.
  • Successful Etsy sellers will mentor and guide you through each lesson

This year we’ve enlisted three skilled mentors to help you make the most of 2017, as well as some top Etsy sellers to help coach you through the finer details (you’ll meet them next week). Get to know the mentors below, and find out how you can make 2017 your most creative year yet.

Maryanne Moodie

Maryanne Moodie is an Australian textile artist and educator with a studio based in Brooklyn, New York. She is an author and a weaver. She explores the tradition of weaving and tapestry while playing with colour, form, and texture to bring new life to an ancient art. She is very involved in the textile art community in New York and Australia and spends much of her time teaching the skill to others through workshops world-wide.

What inspires you to create?

I try to be very present and open when designing and creating.  I try to take time to notice what I am feeling at the time and give myself the time and space to explore the feelings fully. I try to have my eyes open and notice both the minutia of my immediate environment as well as the bigger picture of life and the journey we are on. I use this as a type of art therapy that allows me to explore feelings in a positive way and create art.

What piece of advice would you give to someone beginning their creative business?

Be bold, take risks and have confidence in yourself and your idea.

It’s all about connection and finding like minded creative souls to share your journey with. I’ve met some very close friends through social media and they have inspired me to build my business. I can see the participants of Etsy Resolution doing the same through this wonderful course!

Ria Chan

Ria is the creative mind behind the hugely popular Craftsposure Instagram account, an online educational hub to help makers grow their online presence.

What’s one secret you wish you’d known when you started your business?

You can’t do everything yourself. When you’re starting a business, you probably don’t have hundreds and thousands of dollars to spend to build it. So you do everything yourself. You become business owner, maker, graphic designer, writer, photographer, web designer and a salesperson all in one. Even if you’re not at a stage where you can afford to hire employees into your business, don’t do things on your own. Ask for advice and talk to other people. Get a friend to help out for a few hours when the orders are piling up. And if you’re just starting out, reach out to people who’ve already done it and share your idea with them for feedback.

Do something creative every single day. You’d think that running a creative business means that you get to be creative everyday. But you’ll find yourself spending 80% of your time on admin, emails, marketing, packing, taxes and running a business. It’s so important to remember your “why” and the reason you started. You can choose to write something everyday, take photos, paint, draw or even add a creative spin on something you regularly do.

As part of Etsy Resolution, you’ll have a chance to take part in live Q&A’s with each of our mentors through the dedicated Facebook community.

Heck, I didn't even get an email with the sign-up dates. I've done the last two years of Etsy Resolution and I learned something new each year. Sorry to miss this one. Considering it's free, why is there such a rush to make it disappear? People open shops all year long; can't the lessons be available as a learning program for a few months instead of a few days?

Another great opportunity missed. It would be nice if back copies were available. Just a thought :)
