Etsy.com handmade and vintage goods

Our antipodean Etsy community is a fun and friendly online community.  Despite the vastness of our region, Etsians in Australia and New Zealand regularly connect with each other and with others all around the world. To help those who might be new to Etsy, we’ve put together a couple of essential resources to join in on the fun.

New sellers

If you’ve just set up shop, check out this post from our merchandising desk. It contains timeless advice about merchandising opportunities, like tailoring your shop’s products depending on the season or the holidays. There are also some great theme ideas for treasuries – birthstones for example. Did you know March has two birthstones?

Ship to shore

Etsy admin Jennie put together this bumper post about shipping in our great southern land. The information here will give you some options to fast track your labelling, estimate your international postage and many more awesome tips if you’re a seller or a shopper. Bookmark now!

Sign up to our E-news

You best believe that we’re going into Autumn, not Fall! Our fortnightly e-news showcases seasonal shopping trends for our hemisphere, along with fresh new Australian and New Zealand shops. You can subscribe here or select the email tab in your account settings to update your subscriptions.

Use Etsy Local

Etsy Local is your handy tool to select precisely where you want to shop. You’ll find this link on your homepage in the box titled “More ways to shop”. Here you can select shops that ship within and to Australia. Want to know what’s being made in Geelong? Want to check in on the glorious makers of the Northern Territory? Or, you can search the whole country for something specific..

Show us your treasures

Our final essential bookmark is possibly the most fun of all (apart from scouring the country for potato products). The Etsy homepage provides a showcase of great homegrown products and supports sellers who ship down under. Awesome, right? Well, if you use the following guidelines to make a treasury we are able to consider it for use on the Australia and New Zealand homepage.

These are the things to consider for your treasuries:

  • Create collections with great item photography
  • 8 items ship FROM Australia
  • All items SHIP TO Australia (or “Everywhere Else”)
  • 16 items total. (Tip: make your top line the strongest)
  • Use the tag “EtsyAU” (without quotations) so we can find them
  • Please don’t include your own items
  • Don’t double up on items from the same shop

Still feeling like you’re a bit off the beaten track on this virtual information highway? Our guide to getting found in Australia is even more comprehensive than this one. You can also bridge that gap by joining a Team in your area.

It can feel pretty isolated down here at times, especially for those of us who sell seasonal items, but a quick browse of the local teams discussions and you soon realise that we are not alone. So bring on winter and while it may be a little cold in some places, surely there is no better time to create as the blistering sun of summer fades into a distant memory.

Thanks, this is really handy – especially the shipping tips. I'm based in Sydney and am just getting started on Etsy. I'll definitely implement some of the ideas you suggest to try and get that exciting first sale.

Its great to have a regional community hub to refer to, I've always found it a little tricky navigating the seasonal (and linguistic!) differences between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Loving the 'shop local' feature on this website, and looking forward to creating an EtsyAU treasury. Thanks!
