Change of season’s means a new DIY from our favourite Flowersmith, Papetal. This floral mobile is a perfect first nursery addition or even for the little one’s room, adding a bit of winter wonderland no matter where you are in the world.
Tools & Materials
- Bamboo skewer
- PVA glue
- Florist tape
- Florist wire, 18-gauge
- 180GSM Italian crepe paper in ivory, orange and green
- This template for the petals
Place petal/leaf in between bamboo skewer and thumb. Draw the skewer gently outwards and away from the body to form a natural curve.
Grasp the centre of the petal with both of your thumbs and index fingers. Press your thumbs against the paper while gently stretching outwards, so that the petal forms a concave shape.
STEM WRAPPING WITH PAPER STRIP
Apply a small amount of PVA glue to one end of the stem, then attach one end of the paper strip. Wrap the paper strip around the stem in a downwards spiral, stretching the paper gently in the process. Wrap until the stem is completely covered, then cut away the excess paper. Secure the end of the strip with PVA glue.
STEM WRAPPING WITH FLORIST TAPE
Wrap the tape around the stem in a downwards spiral, stretching the tape gently in the process. Wrap until the stem is completely covered, then cut off the excess tape. To secure the end of the tape, gently apply pressure around the bottom of the stem.
*Dimensions are height x length. Paper grain is vertical.
A – Mobile Frame
- Cut about 20-30 strips of green paper at 1cm x 20cm.
- Bunch three 45 cm pieces of wire together and wrap them with florist tape.
- Repeat to make two more stems. Using florist tape, join the top half of one stem to the bottom half of another.
- Join on the remaining stems in the same way. Bend the resulting length of wire to create a circle, joining the top half of the first stem to the bottom half of the last stem using florist tape.
- Wrap the entire circle with green paper strip and secure with PVA glue.
- Cut three 25cm pieces of wire, then wrap each wire with green paper strip.
- Using PVA glue, attach the top 5cm of the wires together. Cover this section with green paper strip, then bend to create a hook.
- Bend the wires outwards, then bend the end of each wire to create a small hook.
- Connect the two components of the mobile frame as shown.
B – Flower Ring
- Cut a 8-10cm piece of wire, then wrap the entire length of the wire with green paper strip.
- Cut a piece of orange paper at 1.5cm x 5cm. Finely fringe the top two third of the paper, then wrap the unfringed section around one end of the stem. Secure with PVA glue.
- Cut four petals using template A and ivory paper, then cut two leaves using template B and green paper. Curl and cup all petals and leaves.
- Using PVA glue, attach the petals evenly around the base of the fringed flower centre. Cover the base of the flower with green paper strip.
- At 4cm under the base of the flower, attach the leaves using PVA glue.
- Gently bend the stem to create a natural look.
- Repeat step B1-B6 to make 25-30 flowers.
- Using PVA glue, attach flowers around the main ring of the mobile frame. Cover the joins with green paper strip.
C – Hanging Branches
- Cut a 15cm piece of wire, then wrap the entire length of the wire with green paper strip.
- Cut three leaves using template B and green paper. Curl and cup all leaves.
- Using PVA glue, attach first leaf onto one end of the stem.
- Attach the second leaf at 4cm under the base of the first leaf, then attach the third leaf at 2-3cm under the base of the second leaf.
- Repeat step C1-C4 to make 32 sprigs of leaves.
- Make 4 short branches and 4 long branches of leaves in the arrangement as shown. To make the branches, use PVA glue to join the sprigs, then cover the joins with green paper strip.
- Bend the end of each branch to create a small hook.
- Connect the branches to the flower ring by their hooks, alternating between the short and long branches. Make sure that the branches are evenly distributed around the ring.
